I think it's forcing him to accept some responsibility, realize his actions impact others and do the absolute minimum to show some respect to those who gave him an opportunity many only dream about. Maybe it's just me and my generation's values but if my kids ever wanted to quit an activity or back out of a commitment they faced the coaches or those they committed to and showed some respect when backing out.
