where was lally's response to waters article

Putting eeeverything else aside with Weitsman, Waters' quote saying AW had a recruit on a plane with a "rapper" and that made them "very nervous" is so odd. Makes it sound like there was something wrong with it being a rapper specifically. Like some other type of celebrity would be less of an issue? Interesting phrasing Mike.
There's a whole lot wrong with Water's tweet.

I feel like that’s reading into it a little too far. My assumption is the school saw it as an impermissible benefit, which would be impermissible regardless of the type of celebrity. It seems like the school has been operating in a state of perpetual fear of a besmirched reputation since the 2nd probation and wanted to avoid any possible link to ‘pay for play,’ even though it was clear at that point ‘pay for play’ was the new norm. The school was overly cautious and slow to adapt.

The fear is fair. But, the university's compliance department cleared it. I think the problem was when a photo of Adam was used in the NCAA powerpoint, or whatever it was. That along with some egos were what caused the abrupt break from AW. I believe it could have been handled differently and the proper adjustments would have been made.

Syracuse doesn't want him as a donor. Dasher is trying to open the lines of communication so that the parties involved can work it out. But as of right now, Syracuse doesn't want Adam Weitsman involved with Syracuse University Athletics.
"Syracuse" in this context = the Chancellor? The AD? Both?

My understanding is the chancellor and certain members of the board of trustees. But, I only know one side to this whole thing. I am just hopeful that the lines of communication can be opened and a compromise can be found.

I like Waters but I specifically remember him, and Axe and Donna and the rest saying we were being "disrespected being projected at 11th in the ACC preseason ranks". With this talent blah blah tourney or bubble at least.

He's just as much of a problem drinking the koolaid, living in the past and in the CNY bubble. Where was his top notch reporting over the summer? Alot of Captain Hindsights spraying stuff in social media and writing articles now.

If I'm Lally or anyone that gave big dollars, I'm going to be on Autry and JW's butts and getting after Waters too. Or I'm AW looking to get back in the game even. Where was the heads up or even a by the way we might be in trouble.

It was all fun and games this offseason reporting about what was happening on the hill yet no one thought to make a phone call and see what these SEC schools were doing or paying. And now they drop the hammer in late February when they finally think it's safe to hammer people in this space.

That’s fair. Weistman social media presence was very engaging to students at the time they were at SU. The celebrities coming to the games will have many students who attended during that time remembering SU basketball fondly when quite frankly the program wasn’t performing up to our historical reputation. Jimmy Fallon leading the SU Marching Band. He also always had his inbox open to SU students aspiring to be entrepreneurs to just reach out and ask for advice. He knows how to connect with the Gen Z generation.

I appreciate the response. I understand Adam's deal is social media, I just wonder if he will really be able to engage that segment of alumni. I think it gets glossed over here sometimes, but Adam is not an alumnus of Syracuse University. It seems like many of these "whale" NIL donors attended the university they are working with, and thus have an easier path to engaging with fellow alumni.

Maybe the situation involving AW, Cuse, Kent, the rapper, recruiting, concerns about the NCAA, etc. also affected the school's relationship with the then head coach. Wasn't it around the same time that the head coach was retired and a new one named?

how likely is it Weitsman comes around, plays by the rules, becomes legit donor?
The NCAA has no authority over NIL, they were sued by Tennessee, Nebraska, Virginia and NYS, and the courts told them they have
no authority over State Rules on NIL. They also were told they can not start any investigations against any University over NIL.
Basically the NCAA is pretty much powerless, to do anything but run the NCAA basketball tournament.
And who knows how much longer that will be.

yeah I know by rules I was referring to SU's preferred mode of donor participation

It was Diddy (joking).

I’m not sure where. Obvious politics there, but Adam did just post this in reply a little while ago.
Thank you Dasher for whatever you’re doing in the background. The best case scenario for Syracuse athletics is to have both the Lally’s continued support and Weistman’s support again. Weistman is an influencer with lots of connections that can be super important in supplemental support through NIL opportunities once the university starts paying athletes directly. We truly need everyone’s support. Weistman also has a huge connection with the Gen Z’ers who’ve graduated Syracuse in the last 5 to 6 years and can be a huge ambassador to keep that generation engaged and to be future donors.

Why do you guys continue to ignore reality? JB himself said Weitsman did not give to NIL in any meaningful manner.

And for that we have/will continue to suffer greatly!

I thought as part of the proposed House case settlement, that Judge Wilkins is going to consider whether to approve in April, the NCAA would have some authority over NIL payments. I believe the language of that was modified a bit because the Judge initially was concerned whether it was in the best interests of the athletes. But she did give her inital approval. There are many athletes objecting to the settlement so no one knows if the Judge will approve it as is or there will be more modifications. In addition, there is the possibility of Federal legislation on the topic which could presumably supercede these state laws. Senator Cruz, Chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, has said he wants to enact legislation in this whole area around the House and other cases.

You do realize that Adam was shut down before NIL really got going?

Getting a stiletto from 721Comstock is the low point of my day. That doesn't happen very often.

Yeah we’re comparing support that happened or was promised during a much more uncertain NIL market. As well as a market that had a lot less money in it at the time as well. There is obvious signs of progress, still many steps to go.
Don't be mad, be hopeful that all parties will be willing to sit down and talk about their issues.
I love this about the hope. I think cordialness amongst the most influential people in the fan and alumni base. Whether people like it or not, Adam Weitsman was a very influential fan in our fan base is one of the many things I think is necessary to reverse course and get back to where the fans want to be.
