Which of our guys would we like back next year?

There seem to be a pretty good number of talented guys on the roster, to the extent we want to run it back next year with a different coach.

If Freeman is potentially back, I wouldn't want to overpay for him. I see him as a purely small forward. His defense is too poor and he's never in rebounding position on offense to get put-backs. I'm not so sure Donnie leaving would be a bad thing, especially if he wants too much money, and even more of the star treatment.

Sadiq White would be a pretty good power forward next year. I like his fire. I see him as a Terrence Roberts type, and I think he makes a pretty good jump next year with more playing time. Sadiq can defend. Sadiq gets inside for offensive rebounds. That's what we need from this spot.

If Kingz gets his extra year, as some have said, I start him at shooting guard next year.

I think George will be better next year. He has gotten better as we've gone along, and as he looks for his shot a bit more.

Anthony is back, but if Kingz gets another year, he is the clear starter. I think Anthony will work hard this summer, and hopefully come back in much better physical condition next year.

I feel bad for Fennell, and think he may be a good player who gets away. I would be happy with him as the backup point guard.

Kyle will be missed, but he should have been a PF for us, to be honest.

JJ will be missed more than some people realize. Did you notice that Wake got their margin in the 2nd half when JJ was out and we had about 3 bad possessions in a row? (Donnie shot clock violation started that stretch.)

I like Soare as our backup center again next year. I see him improving, getting more blocks and rebounds, a few less fouls. If he's our starter, that's a problem. But he is a quality back up on the roster, and worth a roster spot.

I would like to have Betsey back, but I would obviously start Donnie over him at the 3, if he's here.

We have to get a 6-10 240 guy with a low post offense next year. Someone with size to defend the post. We have enough three point threat in the front court. Let's get a horse down low who is athletic enough to defend the rim.

You'd want to add another 3, and another PG. But otherwise, with a better technical, tactical coach, that could still be a very good team. Think of the retained chemistry in this portal day-and-age.

I'd keep Sadiq and Kingz if he can get another year. Send everyone else packing. Bring in someone who understands offense after the turn of the century. Need an offensive coordinator who is not stuck in 1996 to 2005...

I could see a scenario where George might be good if he had a GREAT coach... but it is like a 1 in 20 chance it works...

I’m not sure Kingz can play the two. He’s not a natural ball handler. He has only shown he can put his head down and drive left. Very little playmaking ability. I’m not sure I want him handling the ball much against a press. White and Kingz are the only two I would consider bringing back. Freeman and George are the two biggest culprits that Red was talking about yesterday. Neither can guard a chair and both have their pictures in the dictionary under the definition of soft. The young freshmen on the bench are unknowns. Fennell and Womack are very skilled. I loved Womack’s hs tape. He was quick, great shooter and a very good defender. This year he lacks strength. Maybe bring Betsy back. He’s a bench piece at best and seems to try, but he’s another one dimensional player. He can’t keep anyone in front of him on defense. Anthony is a big question mark. If we have to keep Anthony, but have Hop as the coach. No way. At this point, Anthony can’t even be considered a one dimensional player. He’s bad on both ends. This program needs a complete overhaul. New directions from a coach out of the program and new talent up and down the roster. Currently, we are a mess. Wildhack better have his big boy pants on and make the correct call moving forward..

If the coach is Hodgson I think Betsey off the bench is a great option.
I don't really care if every player is gone.

Why do you constantly make things up about JJ Starling? He was absolutely on the floor in the 2nd half when WF stretched out its lead. In fact, JJ got blocked at the rim and then forced a 3-pointer during the stretch of game you are talking about. Do not take my word for it; read Donna Ditota’s article detailing the absolute lack of any D the team played. And that includes JJ who was torched.

And Betsey? I hope he finds a good landing spot. He makes JJ look like a defensive wizard.

I would bring back almost anybody who would be willing to return. We lose, for sure, Starling and Kyle, if we could replace them with significant upgrades and get a real coach, we just might have something. Continuity has value.

Guys like Freeman, White, Kiyan, Betsey, Kingz, and George could all be solid players if they arent asked to do too much. Donnie is a borderline star and with modest improvement and a star cohort we just might have something. Sadiq has the potential to make a jump. Red's underutilization of him is criminal.

I'd take everyone back that has eligibility, but focus on White, Kingz, Kiyan, and Betsey. And Donnie!
I think they all will improve with a team centered flow offense (not just one on one driving after wasting 25 seconds), and especially with committed defense. Need a hard coach who demands commitment and defensive responsibility.

Stole my comment. Kings and Sadiq only.

Can a coach produce toughness in a player? This guy scored 28 last night and was one of the main reasons we lost. His defense and his handle are overwhelmingly soft.
Ultimately it takes two to tango, but a good coach can make a world of difference.

This is a weird angle that I see you taking in multiple threads. Our current coaching is (to be kind) not adequate. I know part of your schtick is that you've stayed as loyal as possible for as long as possible, but for your own sanity stop placing blame everywhere but where it belongs.

Yeah, I'll take your apology now.

White and Kingz, as many others have noted, because they are about the only two who have an inclination to play defense [outside of Kyle, who is out of eligibility after this season].

Don't care whether George, Donnie, or Anthony return.

But, it really depends on who we hire. Up to the new coach.

FWIW, if we hire Hopkins, I would expect many of our current players to return. If we hire outside [say, Hodgson or another coach] -- who knows?
