Without Erv we need a speed player most likely to try and replicate his production. Obviously we have Strickland and Perkins(Ellison was a brain fart) as possible replacements. I hope we don't use Ben Lewis in the hybrid role.

With that said who are the fastest players? Estime? Assuming Erv isn't out a long time we should still be 3-1 going into USF and hopefully he is ready for that game.

Ellison is on defense. Maybe your thinking of Perkins?

I think you meant Perkins rather than Ellison who is a DB.

Replacements will be used situationally I'd imagine. Lewis has strengths in blocking and the pass game, they'll most likely utilize him that way. Strickland I believe is stronger running and in space, he'll most likely be utilized that way. Perkins will be there for relief.

We'll be fine, not as dynamic, but fine.

Not as worried about speed in this particular game versus execution. If we can keep mistakes minimal and just run our offense, we will score points and be just fine IMO.

Wake is not a fast defense, but they have great LBs. They need to be exploited by our XBs and I'm also thinking this is Ishmael's breakout game.

I won't be greedy 3-1 and we are on the bowl train.

I just want to be 3-0 heading into that LSU game. I don't care how ugly the 3-0 is, I'll take two Villanova type wins. And I'm not entertaining thoughts about winning that LSU game, just want there to be some buzz. 2-1, bad. 1-2, completely depressing.

Unless Wake's offense is significantly better I still think we will win a 24-17 type game. Erv's speed is a loss but I just wanted to know who are the speed players we have.

if we beat wake 24-17 then we have little chance to go to a bowl. we need to show we are trending in the right direction and squeaking our wins against the teams that we have to beat isnt going to show that. if we are going to win a tight game it needs to be because we scored points not because the D held us in the game. 34-27 would say more about the team than 24-17 does.

Based on a very small sample, Strickland is a match for Phillips as a runner -- maybe not quite as fast. Can't say how he will do as a pass catcher, and whether he knows the hybrid role as well.

I will take any win over Wake, easy or close. It is a big challenge for Lester to adjust to having a true frosh at QB, hybrid & RB (not the starting H-back or RB but maybe our best guys for those slots). Maybe McFarlane steps up?

We might want to score big (34-27), but Wake's defense was decent last season and it returns LBs who were 1st team (Chubb) and 3rd team (Lee) on pre-season all-ACC teams. Has experience in the safety spots (we don't), and a DL that matches up with our DL.

I don't agree with this at all. We have a true freshman QB, we will be without arguably our most versatile offensive skill player. No matter what the coaches say, we will undoubtedly spend a lot of time running the ball. And I think it could say a lot about our D to hold them under 20 given all the new faces we have there.

People need to prepare for rock fights as Dungey continues to get his feet wet. Winning alone will give the team some confidence.

Agree with this. I don't care how we win, as long as we win, early in a season with so many inexperienced players prominently involved. This is a team that's set up to be better in November than it is right now, as players gain experience and get better acclimated.

No need to prepare. It's the default expectation. I don't mean that as a negative, it's just our program's reality.

I worry that people are getting a little too excited about Dungey a little too early.

Coaches are helping create that, but I get why they'd be afraid to say hey pump the brakes, kid is just a freshman. Because everyone would probably say haven't we seen this movie before? And I'm guessing his boss might say then why don't you have anyone between the 5th year guy and the 1st year guy who is ready to play?

I'm excited about his future, think he could be one of the all time greats at SU. I really do. But there is going to be a rough stretch, perhaps starting as soon as this weekend.

if we lose a low scoring game are we really any better prepared than we were last year? i dont dungey has to light it up for us to score, but we need to see the oline play well. if we score 20 then the oline has issues as well and i dont see how we get to 6 wins, dungey could improve every game but that doesnt mean we start scoring 30+ by year end and we need that to win more than 4.

I think Strickland maybe actually be faster.

That's not entirely Shafer's fault as one QB failed to qualify (AE), one left the program (MK), and one is working his way back from injury (AL). All within the last 12 months. That being said, I agree with the rest of what you wrote.

A tough AD might ask why the program in 3 cycles failed to recruit a QB who could play at this level and also could qualify (other than Dungey). Kimble and Wilson are great kids, but neither was effective last season. Same with AJ Long. Staff had to know AE was a risk.
We have to hope Wilson is ready now as a back-up and Dungey stays healthy.

We need him to play well enough against the lesser competition that we can have some hope that against Pitt/BC/UVA/NC State we can claw out some wins. We just may need to get to 4-1 in order to do that. People are expecting Dungey to make big improvements over the season, but I think it's more likely that his strongest showings happen early while there isn't a lot of film on him and Lester's offense remains semi-unknown.
