Who are we?

We be what we is cuz you know how Boeheim do.

We are long past being 'the man' and beyond the 'sea is high' crisis and 'chasing the years.' We are at the 'another blink of eye' stage, where 'sixty seven is gone and the sun is getting high.'

This is not about any specific player, not about the coach, about this game and not to rehash every argument the game, but seriously… who are we?

What’s our identity? Where are we going? What are we building? What are we looking to become? What’s attractive about us to a recruit?

Are we an offensive team, defensive team, physical team, athletic team, 3 point shooting team, driving team, smart team, deep team?

What is it that we can expect, every game to bring? At minimum?

What the hell are we?

I’m not mad, not upset just kinda…. Can’t explain it really.

We're a perennial 18-13 type of program at this point. This is a hard lane to carve out... tough to sustain "pretty good, not great" for a long time. String together enough 18-13s and eventually you end up with a 13-18.

We are a one-dimensional three-point shooting team that is easy to defend. We are a 100% zone team, in an era when every team has multiple shooters and guys can now hit shots from 30+ feet with some modicum of consistency. We're the team that never adjusts, that doesn't substitute, and can't execute because the coach is stubborn.

We're a former blue chip program that has become mired in mediocrity.
Wish I could disagree with this.
But all I can do is add that the Orange are also a team that usually waits too long to call a time out.
And a team that rarely regroups from poor performance before halftime...if they do so at all.

You are what you accept.
If the Orange accept mediocrity that's what they'll be.
But since when is that an aspiration?

Precisely. JB’s system has a floor. We’re not going to be awful. But our lack of top flight talent, coupled with being among the most predictable teams in the game (by design), means our upside is capped.

We can still beat top 10 teams. And we can still make a decent tourney run (assuming we make it). But we won’t be sniffing a top 4 seed anytime soon, it seems.

great post. Also...You can only depend on the selection committee so many times as we’ve seen

The OP has more questions than a Jeopardy game.

We are Syracuse Basketball. It is our identity. And it says a lot.

Without revisiting the past I can't answer your questions. I'll take one of them. Let's see what's attractive to a recruit?

Under JAB in 45 years.

We have: 19 BE regular championships
4 " tournament championships
34 NCAA appearances
5 Final Four appearances
7 Elite Eight appearances
19 sweet Sixteen appearances
5 Final Four appearances
2 National Champion Runner Up appearances
1 National Championship
1 HOF coach who has never had a losing season
51 All Americans, first team , second, third and honorable mention 56 have played in the NBA
68 have been drafted into the NBA
24 drafted in the first round
At present Dave Bing is in the BB HOF
The Melo Center - State of the Art Basketball practice and training facility
The Carrier Dome which holds the on campus record for any BB game attendance wise -
35,446 vs Duke twice with 84 30,000 plus attendees since the Dome was built
Syracuse University - not a bad place to hang your hat

We are all of these teams in every game with various results depending on the game, our players game, on/off game on offensive, or defense.

You would not play here if you were not athletic.

I would say we are, under JAB, an elite basketball program and have been for many years which JAB began with a 26-4 record in 1976 - 77 and I believe we are trying to recruit the best players we can each year and win as many games as we can. It is not as easy as it was 10 - 20 years ago and the 2014 - 15 investigation and subsequent penalties - loss of scholarships - vacation of wins definitely hurt.

However we are also a newer member of the ACC having started in 2013. To date through Feb.6 we are 155 - 91.

Some of your questions are self explanatory. If you don't understand the number of and rotation of players you may not be watching closely enough.

Honest answers are provided forthwith by the Coach himself. I'd watch his presser after the Clemson game - you may get some of your answers there. Or call JAB at his basketball office at Manley and ask him where we're going. I'm sure he'd reassure you about Syracuse basketball and tell you where we are,
where we're going and the future.

As far as I am concerned we are 1,075 - 405 .726. We built it and renovated it big time and they came and they are going to come for a long time to see a Syracuse team trying to deal with, Covid, (like everyone else, hopefully gone after 2021), this year and move forward in a positive manner winning as many games as possible as we have in the past.

That’s a thoughtful response but it’s mostly what we were not what we are.

I think you missed my point. There's no argument with the things you mentioned. My point is right now, this year what is the identity of our team in regard to our style of play. If you ask me about any team since 83, I could tell you about the personality, identity and style of play of the team that year. Whether we were the big boy, tough underdog, bully, high scoring or scrappy. When I look at this team, this year, I think my question was legit. Who are we this year?

Your post kinda went left of what I was referring to with my post.

80% of this team's problems stem down to no true pf and center right now. Got to score when Griff and Guerrier are back there together or lose. Another 15% is Inside out ball shouldn't be nonexistant as a matter of Guerrier being stuffed. Would love to see us try Q finding a cutting Kadary off a motion screen.

Need Ajax to play the 4, and Brass to run some backdoor motion cuts to the basket for roughly 15-20 mpg, instead of 4mpg. Focus extra hard on both getting some inside position and Going up strong over their man, every day in practice. Try going up immediately after offensive boards with no thought of getting blocked. Who knows maybe we find a little Warrick in Brass and Roberson in Bull. Woody is not ready to bump inside yet. Even if he hits outside shots it still won't take the pressure off Guerrier, unless the smaller bigs can't guard him. The problem with Dolezaj at the 4 is, teams know to play him tight so he won't dribble out of the high post. Since he can't post up at the 4 or pound the offensive boards, it's a below-par on both ends without a faceup jumper. Just put the tougher taller defender on Guerrier. Griff's tip-ins against taller opponents tend to be a bit erratic at times.

Cant go 6'5 6'7, just not strong or big enough. Need to be 6'7 6'9 for a solid 20. Were already 25-40 pounds underweight at center, can't go 2 inches shorter at pf and sf at the same time.
Case and point. Take melo and Warrick as an example. Rick Jackson and Wes. Fair and Roberson, Joseph, Southerland. Grant and Fair. Malichi at 6'6 had a 225 pound lydon and a 6'9 board eater as well.

Dolez and Sidibe should split 20 at the 5, and Dolez shouldn't be playing more than 10 at the 4. Heck even edwards with Ajax for a few with Guerrier pounding it in. Those 3 should pound the hell out of the offensive boards together, with kadary and buddy driving. I know we are worried about him getting back on defense, but Eddy should be near a weak man's chuckwu on the Off boards at the least with Kadary and Ajax getting back. Go old school, throw out the best players getting 30 plus in our backline. Our 3 Guards are not the issue, 4 SF's, are; IMO. It is legal to have two bigs in the low post at once for 15 minutes.

Lack of extra hungry hustle is a bigger problem than our turnovers outside of Griff and Kadary. Some games 2 or 3 guys give 0% extra effort. At least give it 30%. Buddy,Griff,Guerrier, don't always have to play more than 27 minutes for the sole reason, their backups are as good.
