With Cooney, Ennis, Fair, Rak and Dajuan starting I am not sure we will have one.
CJ made a hell of a 6th man as a freshmen/soph, Grant still has to prove he can. I like the thought of a 6th man subbing in as a 3rd-4th scoring option like scoop/kjo did in 09-10 and CJ did in 012. Everyone said Dion was the 6th man in 012 but imo Fair was in the tough games, as Dion knew he had to be more then a 6th man.
I kinda feel bringing in CJ and Grant at the same time could be a better strategy. Making the adjustment to all of a sudden have to guard both of them would be a nightmare for any team in the country, and Grant would slip in secretly more. Once he comes in off the bench defenses are going to treat him as the starter reguardless. On the plus side having Rak and Dajuan to pound inside could frustrate opposing forwards, pick up a foul or two, and make them feel like they start off guarding our 6th man in Rak/Dajuan.
We really need to establish a 2nd true go to scorer before finding a offensive 6th man though. I just can't see Cooney being our 2nd go to scorer while Grant slipping in secretly as a 6th man the majority of the time. I can see the opposite with Cooney being a 6th man.
I could possibly see Gbinije coming in like 09-10 scoop off the bounce as our 6th man type if he learns to score from the midpost off the drive. I have heard he really can pound the offensive boards for a guard as well, and I think JB is going to push him to be that.
Something we should consider though, and I thought long and hard about this. We could have started Gbinije and Cooney as seniority, and brought in Ennis as a 6th man at the 16 minute mark with Grant.
Gbinije and Cooney are more then capable of handling the ball early on and throwing entry passes to Rak and Dajuan we wouldn't need Ennis' perimeter driving and isolation scoring. Gbinije could also pound the offensive boards early on. Then bring in Ennis and Grant together while leaving Fair and Cooney on the floor giving us our best scoring lineup as a 6th man lineup, shift our offense power to the right side more off the bounce between Ennis and Grant, and maintain the left between Fair and Cooney. This could really drive the game in our favor.
What does starting mean to Ennis anyway? By all reports he either is one and done or our starting pg next year reguardless, with a iq and the drive to do anything to help the team win.
Love thinking outside the box when it comes to my passions like Cuse hoops.
