Since it seems they are our core backcourt for the next few years, who are we expecting to be the better player at the end of their time on the hill?

Trick question - NEITHER!!!

It's JGIII.

Buddy can try to round out his game even more, but unless he becomes Andy Rautins 2.0, then *some people* will bitch and moan about how he only ever got any PT because the coach is sleeping with his Mom.

Even tho Buddy will likely end up being better than other 'shooting specialists' like:
Matt Roe, Cooney, Southerland, etc.
(At least Cooney wasn't a minus defender tho)

Trying to be positive here

While both have athletic limitations, both seem to have a strong work ethic. They will likely both reach their full potential.

I vote JG3. He has more of a knack to score in many different ways from his high school days. And probably will improve his 3 point shooting percentage by a bunch over the years.

This question seems sincere and well-intentioned.
Sorry if it upsets you. No malice toward either kid. They both play too many minutes but we are riding them for the next two years and I'm curious what people expect from each. If that doesn't please you...don't respond I guess.

Neither have great upside because they are both limited athletically (Buddy moreso) and have basically maximized their respective skills by being gym rats/coaches' kids (come at me brah).

Buddy would be an amazing piece on a better team. I thought Joe outplayed expectations this year. Handled the ball the vast majority of the time, made some big shots, and did not have a back court mate who's skills complimented his. Compared to past tweeners who came in to run point, he was pretty good.

I have to say JG3. He's a year younger and has much more room for improvement. While neither is ultra athletic (putting it nicely), Joe has the ability to find more ways to score. I also think he's the better defender. I know, I know - neither is good on that end of the floor. But I expect big things out of him for the next 3 years.

Sorry for the nuance - but the question can't be answered because their progressions are mutually dependent. If Joe can improve his handle (better separation) and see the court better, Buddy will be open more and score more. Joe may not score as much from outside but he'll have more assists, and maybe more mid-range points and finishes at the rim.

Joe seems to have a more naturally fluid offensive game. For a while, he was hitting some nicely coordinated mid-range jumpers in a variety of ways. Much more intuitive as a scorer. But he does have that obnoxious quick flick habit from downtown, which is statistically damaging to the team no matter who shoots it. Those shots mostly miss. Hope he doesn't join the "700 Club" (GMAC's clank totals, not the tv show).

Buddy has form from outside (but only when set, and not creating), and has started a rudimentary drive to mid-range when available, which is more a sign of growing experience than athleticism.

Buddy has the highest ceiling of any one individual skill, shooting. He can be an elite shooter. I’m not sure JG3 will ever be elite at anything (except foul shooting), but ...

JG3 has a higher ceiling as an overall player - passing, dribbling, etc

First, the need to always re-characterize the argument as people arguing that he "only" gets PT based on the coach, is ridiculous, but necessary for most of you for some reason.

Second, stuff like what's in bold, is why I don't trust any of you people that argue about Buddy......methinks some of don't completely "get" how basketball works.

Since you’re quoting me - I’ll bite.

Other than shooting, what was the other plus skill Southy had?

Yeah, he could leap out of the gym, but his rebounding and blocked shots #’s are meh for an athletic 6’8” Forward.

He wasn’t awful at D like Buddy, but I’d say he was average, at best.

Couldn’t really drive, not great at getting his own shot, not much of a passer or ball handler.

In a perfect world - Buddy would be the guard version of DirtySouth -
6th man shooting/scoring punch off the bench.

We don’t currently live in that world.

Your turn - go!

With Buddy at 2, Joe is stuck continuing at PG though prob better at the 2. Can't imagine what SU's season would have been if Joe hadn't been able to adjust and play PG. Wasn't perfect, but did a Good Job.

Joe has room to grow at PG: play smarter, take better shots, learn when to drive/how to finish better.
Joe also plays with a chip on his shoulder -love his moxie, hope he becomes a leader and rubs off on team.

So I guess I see Joe with more upside, but hope both players improve greatly.
And since it's a hot topic: will add that hope both play 30" or less. My perspective: players who go 40" don't go full throttle. Our guards are usually over-matched athletically. Reasonable minutes should allow them to play with more energy, to hopefully make up for that somewhat.
If they play 30" or less, that should add upside for both.
