This has been touched on in a couple of threads, but I want to twist the question from who should we try to hire to who would want to come here.

So, let's say we have candidate X who is looking at different openings in the P5 conferences.

What are the factors that make us an attractive option?

What are the factors which really hurt us?

How important are things like conference, school size, recent vs past history, home stadium and facilities, geographic location, starting salary, uniforms (just kidding!), youth/talent on our team, national perception, etc.

I look to the many who are more football-wise than I am, but welcome any opinion as we are all in the same boat here! Just keep it civil, please.

Pros:
Great tradition
Unique, domed stadium that is about to get a facelift
New facilities
Decent, young talent on both sides of the ball
New AD who is going to make football a priority
ACC has a relatively easy path to the playoffs
Chance for a coach to make a name for themselves and become our favorite new shiny toy
History of recruiting some hotbeds pretty well (FL/GA/NJ/PA)

Cons:
Mired in a 15 year slump of irrelevancy
Have to face Clemson and FSU on a yearly basis
Team that is smaller across the board than most of their peers
Question mark at a few key positions (QB with dungeys head a hot topic)
No immediate recruiting hotbeds in the schools vicinity

Positives - opportunity to be HC in a P5, likely pay increase, school with some tradition and facilities, fanbase used to having low expectations, only P5 school that plays in a Dome is a significant advantage

Negatives - Dome renovation could interfere with team, not as high paying as other jobs, not as high profile as other conferences/schools, not a great homegrown recruiting territory

I think that we're OK at QB. I think that the bigger issues are that we're currently a team with a weak identity. That's a double edged sword. We need a strong identity to win - we really do. However, since we don't already have a strong identity, the new guy will theoretically be able to mold one to his liking.

Also as a pro, SU academics are strong. I get that many good recruits don't care, but I think that many of the middle guys do. The vast majority of players don't make the NFL, and the vast majority of NFL players are out in under 2-3 years. They make about a $1,000,000 over that time, and much of that money goes to taxes and their agent. At the end of the day, they're generally broke well under a decade after they leave college. The difference is that players who go to quality schools, like SU, have a degree to fall back on. That safety net matters a lot. And, as an alum of several schools (SU and PSU), I can say that SU academics are very strong and will open doors. I can also say that they almost categorically put PSU's to shame (i.e. markedly better). So, to the extend of my experience (having gone to both PSU and SU, and having interacted with grads from a number of different schools), I can confidently say that we're good in the abstract and relative to our competition.

Asides from the 5* super studs who have been pushed towards the NFL since the age of 11, most kids do actually care about academics, so yea that would defintely be a positive!

Cons -- weather -- coaches work all the time, but wives/families may prefer the S, or SW, or mid-West, or Far West, or New England, or ...
Syracuse is all about basketball, cross-country, lacrosse, women's field hockey, men's soccer
local economy -- no big corporate headquarters in town; limited job potential for trailing spouses
downtown is not toney (like Ann Arbor), though better than Rutgers, Storrs, State Park

Pros -- Skaneateles is nice, in season.

Oregon doesn't have problems with being far from alot of talent beds..we shouldn't either. I see a couple of your Cons as actually being Pros.. Being in a 15 year slump could look like a gold mine to some coaches. Nowhere to go but up.

No offense...but you don't sound like you have any clue about the local area. You sound like a kid who went to school at SU who is from Conn. or NYC that never left campus.

Oregon doesn't have problems because they are Nike University & have advantages that we can only dream of.

He's joking. "no good jobs for trailing spouses" haha

We're going to put a horse head in Scott Frost's bed tonight.

He'll get the message.

I thought this was going to be about Shafer not accepting getting fired.

Just keep showing up every day like it never happened.
The Larry David gambit.

I like it.

You are 180 degrees wrong on all counts. Grew up in suburbs of Syracuse and have returned frequently, did not attend SU (have family members who did), know Upstate NY (strengths and weaknesses in recruiting to the area) very well, been an SU fan for decades. How about you? Been to other college campuses enough to make comparisons?

Been to college campuses from Spokane to Tallahassee and in between. Care to continue?

So a supposed local boy has nothing better to say about the area other than a blip about Skaneateles.. cute.

You get the team to a certain level and you have two or three games a year between you and a shot a glory.

Depends on where a coach is in his career. An older coach may be looking for a challenge. A younger guy may be just looking to move up. They are both looking for more money. I think Coyle will be able to present a good opportunity to both types. I agree with those saying we will not get a big-time name...nor do I want that. I think we will get a guy who is projected by Coyle to have a good future and be able to develop the program. Likely not a current HC.
