I get the shotgun is helpful but it amazes how college football coaching don’t work on putting their QBs under center.
For QBs sneaks.
For the victory formation(too many QBs need the shotgun to just kneel the ball).

Under center opens a play book for play action, for bootlegs, reading defenses.
I remember in 2011 Bartholomew our C couldn’t shotgun snap so Nassib always had to be under center and Louisville took advantage of that overload blitzed the A gaps numerous times because we couldn’t get into shotgun.

Now it’s the opposite.
Gilbert is an OC right?
Teach our QBs how to friggin take a snap under center just to have in our rotation.
Even if we shotgun 90% of the time that 10% is helpful.

So anyone know why we can’t add that to the offense?

Timing on plays has to change, I suspect.. but some teams handle it better than others..

Because it’s completely repetitive and insignificant movement. Being back gives the QB better view of the entire field.
I've always wondered about this. How are they watching the field when they're watching the ball to catch it? Under center they never have to take their eye off the defense and the ball gets in their hands faster. Seems like that could be beneficial on certain quick passes.

It’s the 20 seconds or so before the ball is snapped. Farther from the line is better than closer.

We went under center once on Friday and Tucker got banged up.

Maybe it's just bad luck.

I remember in 2019, we'd occasionally go under center and run play action and those seemed like the passing plays where Tommy had the most time.

I know that, but what happens immediately post snap can't be ignored. There's benefits to both and it makes sense to be able to do both. QBs used to be able to do both without an issue.

Football became a passing game…

Teams use a lot of RPO on offense now so it's pretty much a requirement to be in shotgun to run it.

Not sure why teams don't QB sneak under center more, perhaps they're afraid of the injury risk or something

Not exclusively.
You can be in the shotgun a majority of the time.
Being able to play under center opens up play action and other ways to confuse a defense presnap.

We can be in shotgun a lot but being able to have the QB under center a little benefits an offense.
Especially our offense that has become run heavy.

Wasn’t GS under center when he dove over the pile for the TD?

Now I’m supposed to remember everything?

Probably.

Wish we did that on the 3rd and 1.
Or, now that it's on film, fake the dive and lob to an open TE that leaks out.

Settle down. You're getting crazy now. It's still early in the morning.

This point isn’t just about Syracuse it’s college football overall.
Offensive coaches have stopped teaching under center QB play for an overwhelming shotgun stop.

Being in shotgun a majority is fine. Teaching these QBs how to do 3, 5 step drops and allowing for play action and bootlegs is just smart football.
Instead it’s become we are going to spread out just too spread out every play.

Diverse offenses actually work well. Unless you have Alabama talent.

I said this on our board. RPO is the "in" offense right now (thanks, Mike Leach?), just as the Wishbone and Power I were previously. It's a whole lot easier to run it from the shotgun. Unfortunately, the shotgun makes 3rd and inches a real adventure. Yes, it's something of a telltale when the QB goes under center, but QB sneaks are all about blocking at the point-of-attack, not deception.

I wonder what the next innovation will be... since these things go in cycles the RPO probably has another 10-20 years in him.

I'd prefer our center learn the shotgun snap first

I think GS would be great for a bootleg inside the 5 yard line and he would need to be under center to accomplish this play.

Couldn't agree more. You can be in the gun and then go under center too for those 20 seconds.

I think having a qb under center is certainly better than what we've done in the shotgun (which hasn't been great)
