Why Coleman didn't play much

Trueblue - you mentioned you don't want JB to waste another McDonald's AA player. What did you mean by that? When exactly has he wasted a McD? Rak was a McD although I have no idea why considering he avg.8 points a game his senior year. He's an example of a guy who should not have made the game.

14 points and 6 rebounds is a LOT better than the other two centers combined tonight. Coleman should have played more. He was very productive there's no denying that.

My bad I meant just to say "a" honestly.

My fault.

Hate to sound like Hilary Clinton, but at this point, what does it matter who was a McDonalds All American?

Defense wasn't the reason this game was close. It was lack of offensive production. Coleman was producing points and as a result should have played more.

Alright, well a top prospect.

Then again, in some cases, what does that even matter.

Yeah, I thought they all were fairly weak tonight as well. Baye, Rak, Coleman in that order when ranking defensive proficiency tonight. I was surprised at how easily the St. Francis kids were getting around them and establishing position. Although they were using the swim move a couple of times, and a couple times they called us for the foul anyway. Kind of an odd game in that regard - probably had Baye and Rak backing off a bit more than they should have had to. I thought a few of those fouls on each were VERY iffy.
I saw it differently. It was impossible to play good D down low due to the zebras. For eg. Baye got a penalty when he clearly had established position. The refs called every single contact against the D. Baye is out best big on D. DC does not have the foot speed to do the things that Baye can do. I missed the first half so I cannot comment on DC's offense.

Yeah. I do understand that it's more frustrating when a highly touted recruit is slow developing.

I would say that Coleman was more than cancelling out what he gave up on D and when he played woth Grant and CJ he was pretty good other than letting that dude spin off him one time.

I agree. I'd like to see a plus-minus for Coleman, especially for the 2nd half.

You need in game experience. He's shown flashes of brilliance. Rak and Keita have had there whole careers to put it together and they haven't.

Why the hell would we waste another Mcdonalds AA. It's beyond me.

Flashes of brilliance? You gotta be kidding. There have been times when he has shown a decent level of play, but never brilliance. He had some very nice minutes tonight but I didn't have any flashbacks to Seikaly, Onoaku or even Etan Thomas.

As close to a flash of brilliance as an SU non junior/senior big man has came to in the past decade.

Fwiw, they had 9 off Rebs to our 18.

Coleman needs to play...alot. He has way more upside than the other two guys. He needs experience. He should be maxing out on minutes in these early season games

Agree completely.

What a pleasure it was to have a competent offense big like Arinze. That fantastic 09 team would start most games by dumping the ball into the post and letting him work.

The offense will be missing a key element until someone develops a back to the basket game.

For everyone who keeps complaining about Coleman's defense tonight, you did see Keita's "defense" tonight too didn't you? If Keita is struggling on defense like he did tonight (fouled out, terrible rebounding), why on earth wouldn't you keep Coleman and his positive rebounding and scoring numbers in the game? The defense of both them was a wash, only Coleman was bringing other positives to the table.

Coleman made one defensive play I liked. He choked off a drive with his feet and put his hands up over the offensive player, eliminating and move to the basket at all. Looked like AO as a senior. I want to see a lot more of that.

I agree we needed Coleman's offense and rebounding in the second half. We went 8 minutes without a field goal.

I've been screaming for a legit big man coach but Coleman should've figured out how to move his feet on defense... That's on him IMO. He's just lumbering on defense.

They were all bad on D. Why were they overplaying so much? You're right about the C defense tonight. Disgraceful. They got burned many times and we were lucky to have some help D come in late to block it from behind.

I remember that play too. Good call. But there were 3 straight possessions when they got into the middle of the zone and guys simply dribbled around him for a lay up. That's when he got pulled.

Part of that is that the guards weren't keeping dribblers out of the lane. They've got to get better at that. I was kind of surprised that JB pulled Cooney for defensive reasons so much last night. I like Cooney up top. I think he does a nice job.
