Forgive me if this has already been answered in another thread, but I'm just not 100% clear on it.

Austin Wilson led us on a 5 play 41 yard scoring drive which included a beautiful corner fade throw for a TD. He was relaxed and into the game, so what was the rationale for bringing someone completely cold to start the half? Why wouldn't we want to have continuity between halves?

I assume it was because we were committed to the option offense and he runs it better than Wilson.

As Bees said, it's because Mahoney is more familiar with the option.

But then why didn't he come in right after Dungey was injured? What purpose does it serve to have to get two separate backups acclimated to the game?

Good question. Hopefully someone will chime in with an answer.

I'm not a coach but perhaps it's because they feel based upon practices that one backup can pass but has difficulty with the triple option reads and the other can play the triple option but is a questionable passer?

Even the sequence of downs when we scored the td after dungey left, featured both QBs including a 12 yard option run by Mahoney on 2nd and 11.

And sequences in the second half did feature Wilson, even though Mahoney "started". Wilson had both a first down pass as well as an interception and being sacked in the 3rd quarter.

Cheers,
Neil

Don't worry a certain newspaper should have something up shortly after reading the board, like they do a lot.

And they don't trust Wilson to not give up the ball.

Shaffer said in his press confrence each qb is good at diferent parts of the offense.

Which is what made the deep shot so strange. If you are going to take a shot there (which IMO was the wrong call), wouldn't it have been better to do a freeze option? CMU would not have expected a deep shot from Mahoney. It is more likely that we get a guy open. Wilson has had accuracy, decision making, and INT issues. Trusting him there seemed odd.

For some reason I didn't even realize that Mahoney played one snap in the first half, I thought he first entered the game in the second half.

Not sure who would be considered better at passing because Mahoney was 4/4 for his foray in the game.

Yes he made a critical first down on the scoring drive.

I cannot wait to see the part that Wilson is good at.

Exactly me too. What. He just isn't a 1A QB. People were clamoring for Lester to throw the ball with Wilson as if he is some type of gunslinger. Ridiculous.

Wilson is another example of some on the board who have always thought he was going to show something and he hasn't. He is 4th string

When Mahoney committed not too long ago I was surprised. I watched his film, and I was impressed in a good way. During camp I was curious to hear about him, but not much was reported. He handled the OT very well which is great to see. Depth at QB is crucial.

To start the second half after CMU missed on the onside kick attempt I really really wanted SU to pick up a first down. I was thinking if they could get any points right there it would be a big help. The fact that CMU opened the half with an onside kick told me that with Dungey out they weren't too concerned about giving up field position. Credit SU's defense which gave up a ton of yards but also forced turnovers and kept battling even though they had very little rest while the offense was on the field.

Looks like Mahoney and Wilson will get more reps this week. I would love to see Dungey get to play against an elite program like LSU.

i don't want to be a about it but i've been baffled about people talking about austin at all. last year has to count. hopefully dungey's early success will help people realize that you don't have to be terrible for three years waiting for guys to put it together.

He throws a pretty ball and has a strong arm - looks the part, esp compared to AJ. But he's a TO machine and gets flustered too easily in the pocket and can't move.

If Dungey can't go I hope it's AJ, Mahoney, Wilson

I just think Wilson is so bad at everything other than having a decent arm people just want to see him throw because it at least looks good in the air. Mahoney looks like he at least gives us a chance to win in some capacity, not versus LSU but against winnable opponents.

I would forfeit the LSU game if it was possible, it would be better for the year moving forward

To clarify my OP, I have nothing against Wilson or Mahoney individually.

I just know that with Dungey going down and bringing in a cold backup, they're inevitably going to be nervous and need a couple series to settle down. So why have to go through that process with two separate guys as opposed to just settling on one?

I admit - count me as one who was excited about Wilson but you're right. He just can't put it together to play at this level.
