Why Did Shafer Abandon Hackett & Marrone's System

At a luncheon last year Marrone explained how he and Hackett eliminated the typical call from the sidelines (“Brown Right Over Flip Zac 73 Chicago arrow X curl”) for a simple number system. They did this because when they called a play like the one referenced above the players were confused and missed assignments. Once they changed to the number system they plays went in very quickly and to his amazement every payer knew their assignment. He said he had never seen anything like it in his coaching career but it worked so they stuck with it.

It is apparent that Shafer and MacDonald have completely abandoned Marrone and Hackett's system for something much more complex based upon Broyld's comment that we had something like 15 plays last year and 1000 this year.

I am at a complete loss as to why Shafer would abandon the simple up-tempo zone read offense we had last year for MacDonald's pistol offense.

Forcing a coach to do a system he isn't comfortable with may be a reason I suppose. I look at when RR forced SS to play that 3-3-5 thing as a possible answer, SS hated it and he doesn't want to push something else down his new OC's throat. I get what you're saying GC44 and I'd love the easier system as well.

perhaps because we had lots of play last year but we let Ryan do the work at the line to set the play up after the call came in from the line.. I dont think either QB can do the pre snap reads that well so the plays is coming in from the sideline

This is where I wonder if Hunt would be better since he has been in the system for 3 years.

That has been my take as well.

Cool Kid's gotta be a cool kid.

It does look like a complete 3 ring circus on the sidelines when they are signaling plays in. You have 3 guys acting like a first base coach and then you have a couple other guys holding up boards with cartoons on it. Far to confusing , and looks pretty stupid to boot.

I believe it's, “Brown Right Over Flip Zac 73 Chicago arrow X curl E I E I O."

Keep in mind it took four years to have a coherent offense here... short memories...

for 2-3 years, we have heard how well Marrone was recruiting!!! Now we don't have talent. WASH RINSE REPEAT, just a brutal cycle this is

It took four years to be a really good offense. And CK isn't starting from scratch.

first three years, offense was in the 90s, just like this year so far.

can't believe we're right back to qb play like this

I think you have nailed it. He doesn't want to inherit something that works and that the team knows, tweak it for a running quarterback and proceed with any sense of continuity- because then he can't take full credit for the offense. This is a career driven guy looking to make a name for himself. Hopefully he'll have the humility to go back to what works. I think his belief in himself is admirable, but jumping jobs every 12-18 months doesn't do much for one's respect for either the guy in charge or the way things were done before you arrived. Maybe I take this too far. I think he can be a good coordinator, just think he needs to be more 'in the moment' and deal with the reality of his team as it stands today instead of looking 10 years into the future when he sees himself coaching a southern team to a national championship.

Great question for the coaches show

It's two games in against two good defenses. And it isn't the passing offense (56th) that has them ranked in the 90's, it's the run game (100th).

fair enough. plus, imagine how many yards they could throw for if they could just stop throwing to the other team. (i'm only half kidding)

allen is making nassib look like pat white running the zone read. curious about hunt. not expecting much but i'd rather see that than whatever we're watching now

they're in the 90s for yards per attempts. but they make up for it volume i guess

17th in pass attempts yikes. of course giving up a couple thousand yards on defense will do that to you

I think we have better talent top to bottom, and better depth than last year. We just have some news guys in new roles. And less talented at QB, and there is no replacing Pugh. But 1-85, I think we're better. NOw we just have too get everyone on the same page.

Go, do you understand what it's like now to root for a team that employs a coach you don't really like?

Yeah, when Robinson was here. And because of how he ran the program.

Any coach who is brought in to be a coordinator is going to do it his way. I don't buy into the notion that if we kept the same offense things would be a whole lot better.. In terms of our QB situation, I think the reality of the situation is that we didn't recruit or develop a QB behind Nassib in previous 3 years... I don't want to hear about Zach Allen either... We never played any backup QB's even in garbage time the last three years... Marrone was asked last year how Terrel Hunt was doing last year at one of his luncheons... He basically shrugged his shoulders and said he didn't really have any idea because he doesn't pay much attention to those on the scout team... In my mind he really didn't think highly enough of him to develop him to be Ryan's backup v. Loeb... If he was still here... my guess is that Charley Loeb would be our starter...We are limited by inexperience at the QB position and at 1/2 of our O-Line and WR's... I hardly think we would have skipped a beat...

that's why it's on Shafer. he just wanted to put the band back together instead of keeping things going

Because a HC that is a former DC doesn't hire a guy and say, "By the way, run a system you don't know." You hire the OC because you like his system. As I recall, a lot of people on this board were calling for Hackett's and Marrone's head at this point last year, and that was with significant experience at QB and WR. By the end of the year things were very different. Why would anyone think we would replace so many important pieces of our offense and do it smoothly?
