that su bb is nationally hated and thought to be a mid major? ( read that in a previous thread ). It's all bs, no one ever wants to play SU, and certainly not in the tourney, everything I've read is people reacting to chuckleheads who get paid to stir the shite. I assure all of you that orange is everywhere save a few. So why not just enjoy it and talk about something else?

Never heard of SU referred to as a mid major, thats silly. Nationally hated? Well we've been pretty successful and we have a coach that irritates even some of our own fans. Oh and we've been on probation a few times no matter how much we like to minimize the reality. I mean many people still think of UNLV as a dirty program and Tarkanian left there over 20 years ago, and he beat the NCAA in court! Disliked? Hated? Maybe, but no where near the level of UNC, UK and Duke.
LGO!

Well it's been a tough road for SU's rep this tournament.

Many talking heads don't think the team deserved to be in the tourney at all. That the first thing against us.
Mich St. losing amplified the hate by make our road that much "easier". #2 thing against us.
We've paid (currently paying) our dues with the NCCA infractions. That rep killer is #3 - hard to deny that.
The fact we are playing UNC keeps the narrative alive. And really hurts as there isn't much effort by the talking heads to separate what UNC is going through from Syracuse's case. #4

I think if #4 could have been eliminated (by UNC losing its sweet 16/E8 game). Then the narrative would be different. #1 and #2 would have run their course. #3 would still have been brought up but I don't think it's as hurtful in the present as it is tied to UNC's mess.

I don't buy into the mid-major thing. The ACC isn't a mid-major league.

The media is driving public opinion. That opinion is overwhelmingly accepted by the pedestrian viewer, a bandwagon opinion. This is why we have the electoral college for presidential elections :)

I don't know what the exact post was that you're referencing but I assume it was meant in terms of this specific team in the tournament. We're getting a ton of negative press despite being a 'Cinderella' that should be the casual basketball fan's rooting interest. We're like a mid-major in the sense that we're even being referred to as a Cinderella and due to the fact others seemingly want/expect our run to be over as if we're entirely outclassed by the opposition.

In general, I don't think anybody would refer to the Syracuse program as a mid-major. The hated part is debatable.

Seems like the hated part comes from "personalities" that went to competing schools (either from a sports standpoint or from journalism school standpoint). Notice how Greenberg mentions Tirico, etc. ...obviously he has a bee in his bonnet about the success of SU grads :)

"Does anyone else find it odd being a basketball powerhouse that people are treating us like a mid major?"

Actually, they are not treating us like a mid-major. They gushed about the mid-majors SU beat before each game. SU is the big bad major who happened to have a relatively mediocre season and sort of proving a team like SU, even in a down year is superior to most mid-majors and can make a run at a title.

Not to mention that some extremely THIN-Skinned members of the SU fanbase, continue to give these azz-wipes much more credit and attention than they've ever deserved.
Its like instead of just enjoying this incredible ride, some would rather focus on the minutia along the way. A total waste of time, IMHO.:noidea:

re: Cinderella.

I think being a Cinderella is equated to a non-perennial tournament team that makes a deep run. But it could also be a major player with a low seed going deep as well.
The thing that prevents that is pride. "We are Syracuse { insert other perennial powerhouse team name here }, we don't storm the court, have down years (they are called rebuilding), or play the role of Cinderella"

I'd rather be called a "Cinderalla" with a 10 seed playing in the NC on Monday than not making the tournament at all.
But the hate is too strong for the "Cinderella" moniker.

No sane person would ever call us a mid major. We are in the top 3 every year in attendance. We play in as major a conference as you can get. We have won a NC and have been to 6 final fours. Why even listen to nonsense like that.

Who has stated we are mid-major?

Edit: Let me rephrase - who in their right-mind would believe and state we are a mid-major?
Probably -

If some one is saying that it's crap. I surely don't think that and neither do the people that I hang with

Uh, no. I've been reading practically every thread and every post for the last week. I don't recall one person calling us mid-major, let alone "most everyone".
My bad, I saw mid-major in a thread and thats what stirred me up as well, It was only one poster but it got me going. My only point is the vast majority of fans nationwide like SU bb, and the guys on TV shouldn't drive you crazy.

Agreed.

Pretty much Greenberg hates SU because he wasn't good enough to get into Newhouse. It's similar to why Gottlieb has hate for SU, because he wasn't good enough to play for Jimmy.
Greenburg picked Manhattan in 2003. That stupidity shows he should never be able to opine on college basketball again.

One of my pet peeves is somebody who thinks they are really funny and aren't. Greenberg is one of those guys.
