Why does SL have announcers?

They don't call the game and just do interviews during game time--in split screen, making it more difficult to watch the game.

But on the plus side, when they aren't doing interviews, they have constant random conversations that have nothing to do with what is happening on the court....so, there's at least that.

Did that announcer really say that Hofstra was the best sports broadcasting school in the country? They must be so proud of his performance...

Agree about the split screen. It is the worst of both worlds; hard to see the game and you have to watch the announcers babbling about nothing.

I said the same thing during the game in the Buddy thread. It’s annoying AF.

I hate to tell you this, but SL gets the SL level announcing crew.

Bilas and McDonough ain't doing SL games.

If you want an actual answer, the reason is they are looking for casual fans to be flipping through the channels and stop when they see an interview with someone they know/want to hear.
The folks who run professional sports (in North America, at least) subscribe to the theory that the game itself is secondary to the "experience". Go to any NFL, NBA, NHL game and have your senses, especially hearing, assaulted. And it's more and more evident at college venues.

To give us occasional gold moments like this. Oh man, I love this interview so much.

Yeah, and it's become worse with Olympic coverage too. They love to zoom in on a player/athlete long enough that you miss some of the action. The people producing/directing sports don't seem to actually be sports fans.

I think your last sentence nailed it.

Well, in the case of Olympic coverage the viewers aren’t sports fans either. That’s why the entire thing is side stories, heartstring stories, etc. Even within that framework the choices can be odd. Like the absolute obsession this last Olympics with worshiping that girl who rescinded her US citizenship to compete for a country who is our number one adversary in the world.

If it were just the summer league that got this kind of treatment you could say, "Well, the producers obviously don't think the play itself is interesting enough to grab and hold an audience."

But in some respects ALL sports coverage is being debased in similar ways.
Meaningless graphics clogging the screen...split screen interviews...sideline reporters who add nothing...silly and frequent broadcaster digressions.

The point of television should be to show viewers what they need to see as best you can.
They tuned in to watch a game.
Instead it's one distraction after another.

And you do wonder whether the execs running the show care or know anything about sports or viewers.

The SL announcers are exactly like the players -

Randos mostly not good enough for The Show, trying to get their shots up, and not bothering to set up teammates or care about what’s actually going on in the game situations, since it doesn’t matter at all anyway.

Ah, so essentially no different from what ESPN broadcasts of reg season college basketball games have become

OR they have research that suggests that the people watching the game are going to be watching anyway and they are trying to capture another section of the audience.

I'm with you, I don't love it at all. But there is a reason they do it.

But simple things like don't zoom in on a player's face during the action. During volleyball coverage on almost every serve you didn't see the flight of the ball until after it crossed the net because they would be zoomed in on the server while they were in their motion and then change cameras after they contacted the ball. It's a little thing but the people that actually want to watch volkeyball, want to see that. I know that wasn't the only example of in game stuff.
