A lot of "southerners" are actually transplanted Northerners. When painting with a wide brush it is necessary to be very careful. While stationed in Louisiana, I met many stereoptypical southerners and I met many northerners taking the jobs only their knowledge and skills could occupy. Same here in Houtson and Florida when I lived there.
There are less third generation Texans or Floridians than transplants in the respective state. At least by my anecdotal observations.
There are large swaths of western and upstate NY that have just as many ignorant folk in them as any place I have ever visited down south. The thing that irks me is that every person from a tiny 'burg or 'ville in the state acts like they are from NYC instead of West Bumf--k, New York.
