Why is everyone leaving?

A team only has 5 starters.

Some kids are happy to carve out a role for themselves off the bench.

Some kids will never be happy unless they're starting.

If you're a walk-on, and you can get a full scholarship at a low major or D2 school, why not transfer.

Under new proposed NCAA rules, everyone gets a one time transfer waiver where they can be eligible immediately. This also means that anyone who transfers into Syracuse is also immediately eligible.

Unfortunately, at many schools, more than 6 or 7 kids play, since the season is more than 30 games long. At our school, however, since we are caught in "Bubble Limbo", we have to play our 6 or 7 best players almost 40 minutes for every single game of the season to try to ensure we make the NCAA tournament.

This "short-term vision" / win now at any cost view of each season on the edge means that the bench players who used to play maybe 20 games out of 30+ each season, now only see half a dozen games, maybe a dozen, and the hooks are even quicker than ever.
As a result, players who can't match the skills of players from one or two or three decades ago, are being asked to play larger roles than their skills (and limitations) would warrant.
And so this has become a self-perpetuating cycle. Where we once could count on an experienced guard, wing and big man returning to form the foundation of next year's team, now just as players are starting to get good - and most are nowhere near being drafted - still depart to who knows what kind of future.

Part of this is college basketball, of course, but how many other teams have 3 of the top 5 or 10 players in the country in total minutes played year after year after year - and are still bubble teams! If the players you have aren't quite good enough, give the other guys a legitimate chance, in case they're better than who you are playing.

That's how I see things. Sure, some guys are better than others, but are any of them good enough to honestly be playing 40 minutes a game?

What is with all of the defections from the BBall program? Washington, Carey, Goodine and now walk-on Brendan Paul. is there something that I am missing regarding the Transfer Portal. These players still have to sit out a year, right?

I mean, what does it say when a staff has consistently underperformed on the recruiting trail (recently) then loses 1/4 of the team at the end of the season?

Because they can.

Hughes is different from the others. he's jumping to the NBA because he's ready to do so. The others think they can get more playing time elsewhere. there's going to be a lot of that if the rules change as JB has predicted. The problem is: if you are losing your bench guys, how to recruit someone to be a bench guy? They are transferring to escape someone's bench. there has to be an open spot in the starting line-up or at least the final rotation. We had Sidibe, Edwards and JBA at center, Dolezaj, Guerrer, Braswell and incoming Woody Newton at forward. We have Joe and Buddy and guard joining by incoming Kadary Richmond. We could use an extra guard but anyone else is no more likely to play here than they did where they are coming from. What we're likely to get is D3, D2 or maybe low major players who want to play on teams at this level. Glorified walk-ons. That gives us extra bodies but doesn't really increase our depth.

Was John Gillon more likely to play here than at Colorado St??

He came in with Frank as the penciled in returning starter at PG.
And Frank was hand-chosen as the “prototype long SU guard” whereas Gillon was... not.

He competed for - and won - the starting job.
Thank GOD.

If you’re a Transfer guard, and confident in your game & skills, and you look at Joe & Buddy -
You’ve gotta like your chances to beat them outta PT.

Just because none of the 3 guys leaving could do so, doesn’t mean somebody else couldn’t.

At a minimum, you’d hope a Transfer player would be confident enough that he could beat out a current HS player for rotation minutes.

Interesting the folks crying about these entitled kids and their crummy parents weren’t saying that about Hughes and his parents.

Must be different or something when someone leaves for a better situation in our favor

Hughes' parents have good heads on their shoulders. And so does he.
His Dad works for IBM in the area, IIRC.

Of course without knowing ANY facts of any situation, if Howard Washington were my son I'd say you have one year left, go find a place where you can run the show and play every minute of your last year.

So...Brockport? Buff. State? Geneseo?

Well, let's all be honest for a minute. Any new guys have to beat out Joe. Buddy is going to play nearly 40 minutes again next year because his dad is the coach. That's why we lost 3 guards (4 if you count Belby) almost the moment they could file to transfer.

Nah, he’s a D1 kid. St Bonnie’s, UB, Niagara, Siena.

I was replying to the “play every minute” part. I don’t think he’s a star anywhere in D-1.

Lets not have a 70 plus year old, or anyone, croot too much in a global pandemic, that is hitting our own state harder than anywhere else, at this time, unless by phone and email.
