It’s never mattered how good we were or how good they were. Their 1972 team was coming off a 3-8 year. The 1977 team had been 3-7-1 the previous year. The 1997 team was 3-8 the previous year. The one team we beat was 3-9 and had been wiped out by injuries, which means the 2014 team was coming off a 3-9 year. It didn’t matter if they were supposed to be good or supposed to stink. We’ve never beaten them when they were coming off a winning record and they are coming off a 9-4 season. The Wolfpack devours the Orange. Book it.
- That pass rush we are so proud of was ineffective against North Carolina’s unheralded Nathan Elliott, who did a great job of reading the defense for short passes and getting the ball off quickly. That’s Ryan Finley’s game. Elliott is 120/196 (61.6%) for 1,241 yards, (6.3 per attempt, 10.3 per completion), 6TDs and 4 interceptions. Finley was 312/479 (65.1%) for 3,518 yards (7.3, 11.3), 17TDs and 4 in last year. This year he’s 151/221 (68.3) for 1,777 yards (8.0, 11.8) for 10TDs and 4 int. With Finley, NC State is third in the country in converting 3rd downs with 54%. Both our starting cornerbacks were hurt last week. They are backed by talented freshmen who are, nonetheless true freshmen. Finley is going to pick us apart while we wonder which of our quarterbacks is going to help or hurt us the most. Finley is what we hope DeVito will be someday and what Dungey never was.
- We just lost to a 3-4 team 37-44 in overtime and beat a 1-5 team 40-37 in overtime. You think we’re about to beat a 5-1 team?
- The strength of their program is shown by the fact that they replaced 8 starters on defense, including Bradley Chubb, the 5th pick in the NFL draft and the rest of the defensive line, all of whom are playing in the NFL, and yet they are 9th in the country in rushing defense with 105 yards per game. They can make us one-dimensional and it’s a dimension we are very unsure about. Look out for linebacker Germaine Pratt, who is having a dominant season.

- Kelvin Harmon, 6-3 214, is a load. He’s a guy who could have one of those long, glorious NFL careers some top receivers have had in recent years. The Daily Orange: “Harmon is currently NC State’s leading wide receiver, continuing his role from a season ago. At 6-foot-3 and 214 pounds with some of the best hands in college football … In his first two years at NC State, he’s put forth two of the top freshman and sophomore seasons in school history. Last year as a sophomore, he posted the first 1,000-yard season at NC State since 2003. (69r 1,017 yds: this year 35/547.) His best asset is his hands — Harmon works on the jug machines every day, he said, working different angles and different hand positioning to try to account for anything he may see on the field.“ He’ll either be covered by hobbled veterans or true freshmen. Watch out!
