(grading on a curve this week)
- Scott Shafer was part of the coaching staff at Northern Illinois when they beat Alabama and #9 ranked Maryland. He was part of Jim Harbaugh’s Stanford staff when they upset #1 USC on the road, 24-23. And that Stanford team had lost 16 of their last 18 games. He’s been in their situation before and knows how to prepare a team for a game like this.
- Our offense can’t compare to theirs but our defense has gotten better. Forget the Georgia Tech game: we tried to play a defense we hadn’t used all year to combat their triple option. Florida State is an excellent team but a strategically conventional one. The defense you will see is the one that held NC State, Wake Forest and Maryland to a total of 13 points. They aren’t Florida State but our defense could at least keep this respectable.
- Especially now that we are using younger, faster players like Whigham, Reddish and Morgan back deep. I’ve spent the last few games looking at the defensive, rather than the offensive backfield and the receivers that were running open earlier in the year aren’t any more. The 10 yard cushions aren’t there either, (although that could change for this game).
- We are going to run at them and keep doing it all day. Hard-nosed, northern football. The Wolfpack didn’t like it. The Deacons didn’t like it. The Terrapins didn’t like it. The Noles aren’t going to like it, either.
- And we are going to run at Jameis Winston. There’s only one Jay Bromley on the field and he plays for us. Peyton Manning isn’t as good when guys are in his face. Jameis Winston won’t be as good, either. Besides, he’s got other things on his mind.
- Hit 'em and see if they fall down. If they do, we can beat 'em!
- Just as Georgia Tech picked our game to play their perfect game, we are going to pick this game.
- You spend a week hearing that you can’t win, you get pretty determined to shut those people up.
