- Here is my description of the Broncos from my SU Football Preview:
The Broncos gave us a tough ride when former SU OC Tim Lester was there. We beat them 55-42, (after a 34-7 halftime lead), and 52-33 in 2018-19. But Lester’s gone – after his first losing season. (Dino Babers is glad we have no such standards here). Louisville OC Lance Taylor has taken over and he’s got his work cut out for him. He’s got to find a new QB and RB and also lost his top receiver and has only two starters on defense. One is CB Kent-H Lovely, 3rd team all MAC and first team all-name team. An opposing MAC assistant coach: “It’s going to be a really rough first year…give the dude some time.”
- They gave up 230 yards passing to St. Francis. They’ll give up a lot more to us.
- The Bronco’s punter averaged only 33.3 yards for three punts. He’ll be punting a lot more than three times against Rocky Long’s defense.
- Their QB, Jack Salopek, had a good game: 19/26 for 170 yards and a touchdown with 1 interception. That’s a QB rating of 129.2 – and that’s with a rushing attack gaining 339 yards. Shrader and Del Rio Wilson combined for 28 of 37 for 406 yards, 7TDs and 1 pick. Garrett’s rating was 211.6 and Carlos’ 249.4. WMU may have a powerful running attack to contend with but how are they going to cover a 6-4 quarterback throwing to 6-5 receivers?
- One cure for a powerful running attack is to put as many hats in the picture as possible. Rocky’s defense is designed to do that. And he likes his men coming from angle the other guys aren’t ready for, almost like a boxer who throws punches from all angles.
- I’ve always said that Trebor Pena was a firecracker waiting to go off. And if he isn’t, DeMarcus Adams and Donovan Brown are. Meanwhile, the Broncos will be starting from their 25, time after time.
