Will Cooney be redshirted?

...doesnt the player have a say in this...maybe Cooney does not want to red shirt...

Actually a good point (imagine that) ... he was asked about it after the last game and said there hasn't been any discussion about him redshirting.

So there ya have it ...

When has a freshman who can play been redshirted? JB doesn't stock pile guys. If a kid can play against D1 teams, then he stays eligible. If JB thinks he can't compete, then the kid gets a year to grow/learn. It appears that Cooney can compete, its just where on the bench he'll sit.

I don't think Cooney will redshirt There's no comparison between him and Gorman talent wise. We'd be losing a weapon off the bench and as someone said be jeopardizing recruiting.

Not one single post about how any of the true freshmen will play the SU Zone.
Guys, PT is dependent on the players ability to play defense. What good is a 40% shooter when he is giving up 75%? Who needs a three pointer when the more experienced line up is stealing the ball for an easy 2 points? When we are good we are way ahead of the competition with our ability to turn up our defense and score easy baskets. If one of the freshmen shows the ability to play well at the top of the zone and you will see them on the floor.

I think Cooney fills a void this team has had since Wes & Andy left us for the NBA. I think Jim has missed that and has been anxious to work a pure shooter back into the lineup.

I hope JB redshirts Cooney, but I am not sure he will. I highly doubt TC will be able contribute much anything to the team this season, especially since Kris Joseph is already a 37% 3 point shooter, he is finally getting healthy, and I doubt TC would shoot 37% from downtown in his frosh season. Very few freshmen scorch the nets from downtown their first year.

Even G-Mac, with the offense running through Carmelo, only shot 35.7% his freshman year. Joseph, Mookie, Southerland, and Scoop all shot that well from 3 last year, and Triche shot threes that well during the BE conference play.

Plus, even if JB doesn't redshirt him, Cooney won't be in the "lineup," unless JB goes 10 deep, which is unlikely. And even that is assuming that Cooney beats out Southerland as the #10 player, which also isn't tremendously likely.

Cooney has almost no chance to beat out Melo, Joseph, Triche, CJ, Xmas, Scoop, Waiters, BMK, or MCW. I hope TC redshirts like Scoop did during his "injured" season, but JB doesn't give out many redshirts.

  1. Cooney can shoot.
  2. It is not proven that anyone else really can (sorry but Mookie doesn't count).
  3. JB mostly redshirts injured players.
  4. JB won't be here for Cooney's 5th season and I doubt he's worrying about leaving the cupboeard bare.

Great point. And in his limited minutes on Tuesday, Cooney looked every bit like the worst defensive guard on Syracuse right now. Slow and prone to reaching. And that was in man, which should be much more intuitive than zone for a young guy.

Boeheim doesn't give spot minutes to shooters and he doesn't give any minutes to guys who can't defend (not, at least, when there are other players who can defend). That's all one needs to know about Cooney's potential court time this year.

Don't disagree at all about minutes predicated on defensive ability. But, it is much easier to hide a lesser defender in a zone than in man. That's why many teams go to a zone when their guys get into foul trouble. It's harder to isolate them. Defense won't impact Cooney. Whether we need a shooter for a brif period of time will.

This is simply backwards.

It is Cooney who has not really proven that he can shoot three pointers at a 37% success rate (or something impressive thereabouts).

It is proven that Joseph, Southerland, and Mookie can all hit 3s at that rate or better, while Jardine and Triche are real close. TC is not going to have an easy time getting his shot to fall his frosh year, very few shooters do.

The players all rave about Cooney as a shooter. GMac says he is the best shooter that Syracuse has had since he's been here.

McNamara was quoted as saying "He is the best shooter I have seen." Hyperbole might be one of his weaknesses, or he might actually believe that. Either way, pretty high praise.

The one shot he made was pretty amazing. Coming off a high screen, the pass to him was low and outside. The pass came hard at knee level or lower. Many times that same pass would roll off the receiver's hands and out of bounds for a turnover. Many times it would be saved, but then the offense would have to reset. Cooney was able to catch the ball, do a very quick low dribble, rise and nail a three pointer before his defender could get off the screen. Of course, the defender was Mr. Nobody from Nowhere College, but the physical skills Cooney showed are largely immeasurable. Hands, composure, quick release, some handle and accuracy were all demonstrated on that one play. The two things I like the most were his hands and composure. A lot of guards are lucky to prevent a turnover. Cooney made it into a very nice positive play. He will force his way onto the court if he is making those plays consistently in practice.

Boeheim can't recall last time Cuse was this deep

Jim Boeheim's team is so deep that he might wind up redshirting Trevor Cooney.

"He's our fifth guard right now," said the Syracuse coach. "We'll make a decision this week."

Cooney, a top 75 player and arguably the best pure shooter on the team, is behind Scoop Jardine, Brandon Triche, Dion Waiters and Michael Carter-Williams.

That's serious depth.

It's more of the same up front - where Boeheim will likely rotate three guys between the power forward and center spot: sophomores Fab Melo and Baye Moussa Keita as well as freshman Rakeem Christmas.

"Christmas will start at the four - and also play some at the five," Boeheim said.

"Fab has made major strides," he added. "He's a different player. He lost some weight and is playing with confidence. Last year he couldn't get up and down."

"Both of our big guys from last year - Fab and Moussa - have gotten a lot better," Boeheim continued.

That's seven or eight deep - and we haven't even touched on the team's most heralded returnee: senior forward Kris Joseph, who led the team in scoring a year ago at 14.3 points per game.

There's also the group's most underrated player, sophomore C.J. Fair.

This team may not have that dominant player - a lottery pick - but what it does have is strength in its numbers. So much so that Boeheim doesn't seem at all concerned about replacing the production of graduated big man Rick Jackson - who averaged a double-double last year.

"This is the deepest team we've had in many years," Boeheim admitted. "I think we've got a chance."

Sounds like a resounding "yes" to the question of this thread.

I can't remember Boeheim ever commenting on a potential redshirt and then not redshirting the kid.

He only played 7 minutes in an exhibition game...I think that points to a redshirt.

Hopefully he takes the year to get stronger, quicker and perhaps a little bit lighter. He needs to work on his defense and his handle.

Cooney can be an All-American by his 5th year if he uses his time to develop wisely.

I think Trevor realizes there is a tremendous difference between beating up on weak, short kids in Delaware, and going toe to toe with the best basketball players in the NCAA.

well, we should know soon enough. If Trevor doesn't play at all on Saturday, he's obviously getting the shirt.

And if he does play, we know he's not redshirting. Unless we find out in two weeks that he has - ahem - shin splints or - cough - hammer toe that will require a medical redshirt.

Yesterday on 1260 Brent Axe's side kick on a news break said a decision on wheter or not JB will redshirt Trevor Cooney will be coming soon.

Sounds like JB is really considering the RS for TC ... in one of Thursdays articles from OE JB says, to the question as to whether TC will RS this year, "We are going to talk about it in a day or 2". I'm assuming that it will be decided before the Fordham game. Doesn't a nonmedical rs have to be determined before regular season begins?
