I know its a silly question, but after reading article after article about 5 star kids committing and decommitting, you wonder if SU could ever/will ever land a 5 star talent.

Yes, but it will be either a local kid, a legacy or someone within 3-4 hours of Syracuse. Our last one was Johnnie Morant.

Problem is, are local recruits usually seen and respected enough to be given 5 stars?

no, because the services will switch him to a 3 star if he chooses Syracuse like Rivals did to Wayne Morgan.

Highly doubtful, it would have to be a real special situation. For starters, while every body talks about 5 stars like they are a dime a dozen they are not. Rivals currently lists 22 players as 5 star prospects.

Syracuse in modern day history has probably only had a few prospects with that potential:

From my memory I think the kids who could have had that kind of 5 star clout would be as follows:

Syracuse actually signed 3 Parade All Americans in 1988 and had what was widely considered a top 10 recruiting class.

Wendal Lowrey FL, George Rooks NY and Garland Hawkins MD

1989 Matt Neenan PA (usa today 1st team all american ol)
1991 Scott Freeney GA (usa today 1st team all american de)
1992 Dulayne Morgan (was a usa today 1st team all american lb)
Damian Mallory (parade all american)
Johnnie Morant (consensus top 5 WR nationally)
Clifton Smith (consensus top 100 player)
Marvin Harrison (parade all american)

A few other names that may have had a chance if they played today and sported the same offers:

McNabb
Kevin Abrams (in Abrams you're talking about a florida kid who turned down offers from Florida and FSU to attend Syracuse. Very highly rated/recruited)
Rob Konrad

I think Konrad may have been our most widely recruited prospect ever. If I remember correctly, he had a ridiculous number of offers and had Lou Holtz at ND breathing down his neck until signing day. ND wanted him BAD.

A few more AAs I can think of from the 1990s:
(the Infamous) Jermaine Stafford, Kevin Johnson (AA @ QB), Kaseem Sinceno, John Wellington, Kyle and Ian McIntosh, Frank Guifre, Q. Spotwood, Cliff Snell, Vaughn Smith, Ali Culpepper, James Mungro, Charles Burton, (the Infamous) Damien Mallery, Tyree, McClain, Adonnis Kinsey, Tre Mathis, Len Cusumano, Tony Milton, Mike Postell, Joe Donnelly, Louis Gachelin,

Morrant

was from Parsippany NJ One of the many towns I lived in that state. A long time ago.in a land far away:p

That is it. It is 100% political, and frankly, it is all bullshit. The recruiting sites clearly trend the rankings higher if it is a bigger school. If Zach Allen were a Texas commit right now, he would be a minimum low 4-star.

I think Texas, in general, really does recruit the cream of the crop in Texas, but this is definitely how things go with Texas recruits. No matter who Texas offers and when, if they're from the state of Texas, they're a 4 star about 85-90% of the time regardless of their true talent level or progression during their senior year.

You see this with USC as well. If they're from Cali and offered by USC, they're a 4 star about 85-90% of the time.

Actually, larger subscriber base from that school. Gotta keep the paying customers happy. Remember when Junior Onyeali got interest from USC, he jumped to 4 stars.

That's what I meant. It is all hilarious and actually delusional. Rollllll tide.

Too many forget it's a business and the goal is to make money much like the moronic voting system football uses to determine the top 25.

I mean, for fcks sake, Locksley had a clause in his contract that gave him a bonus for a top 40 recruiting class on a subscriber site! If I were him I'd give the site a couple grand to overrate my classes and get me some more money. It also shows how stupid Maryland is to base recruiting on rivals/scout...

We saw what happened when Miami was doing all its recruiting off Scout, they were a disaster.

The NFL parses the draftees to the nth degree and still screws up, there is no doubt in my mind some subscription business like rivals or scout is way more likely to be wrong.

Spotwood, Cliff Snell, Vaughn Smith, Ali Culpepper, James Mungro, Charles Burton, (the Infamous) Damien Mallery, Tyree, McClain, Adonnis Kinsey, Tre Mathis, Len Cusumano, Tony Milton, Mike Postell, Joe Donnelly, Louis Gachelin,

None of those guys would've pushed 5 star status. Probably a few 4's but mostly threes.

Culpepper would've been a solid 4. Kid was a superprep all american - #7 athlete in the country. I found another website that the national recruiting advisor had him as the #13 rated TB in the country. Rivals has those rankings as 4 stars.

James Mungro probably would've been a 4 star kid. He was a parade-all american and set the PA state rushing record of over 8,000 yards. What's curious about Mungro from what I recall is that he was heralded but not a national level recruit. I don't believe Penn State offered him.

Both McIntosh and Spotwood were Parade All Americans.

Maurice McClain was a SuperPrep, Tom Lemming and Blue Chip Report All American.

Dee Brown is another kid who may have pushed 4 stars. He was offered by Miami and one or both of the other Florida schools.

I'd say all in all, no 5 stars in our history except a couple who may have been close. Probably a couple of dozen 4 star types with the majority being 3's.

Depends. If a "5 star" is a player who plays great for SU, becomes an All-American, and an NFL starter...I'd say yes. And really, isn't that what a "5 star" really is?

If Paulus decided to play football at first, what would have been his Rating?
