Will Syracuse choke again?

Print it out in large text and hang it in the locker room .. get these boys fired up!

Every program in the country has their share of disappointing losses in the NCAAs. It's the nature of the beast. If somebody told me in 1980 that over the next 25 years we would go to three National Championship games and win one of them I would have signed up for it in a heartbeat. It ain't that easy.

The upset history that feeds the psychology of so many SU fans cannot be denied, but this piece defeats itself by being internally inconsistent on many levels. Poor article.

Wow that is a hack job of the highest order. The guy says that the two teams in the second round are custom built to beat us, that FSU is surging, but that we have the easiest path to the FF with no obstacles? What?

Post national title, unfortunately all but one appearance since then has ended in what could be conceived as a choke, upset, disappointment, whatever you wanna call it. Time to end that trend. The resurgence of the program in the last 4 seasons has been great, but it needs to translate into something more notable in March for the program to truly step into elite territory.

Yes, this in an annoying article. Using "whiniest" and the early overall tone just makes for a complete hack job. He's trying to set up a scenario to come back and say "wow, what a choke". Just like calling a sweet sixteen exit "a flameout".

The end of the article didn't annoy me as much. Would love to see a deep run. I did feel this team has overacheived during the regular season. Now that overachievement has given some perks here for the tourney. The East and some slightly easier games. Need to take advantage.

I like how two times he says "another" one seed like we are UNC or Duke or UK

also as much as we need to get over the sweet 16 hump, a sweet 16 loss is never a choke

Nice thread title.

So, otto123, do you still beat your wife?

I'm sorry but I am so tired of Syracuse fans being content with mediocracy, A sweet sixteen loss will AGAIN be a dissapontment. This morning ESPN put up a graphic that since 1990 syracuse has only made it past the sweet sixteen twice, That is not good. Anything less than a final four will be dissapointing after what this team accomplished.

Kind of like chocking on missed back court violations, losing your starting center, having to play Blake Griffin, some gym rat named TJ Sorrentine launching 3's from the parking lot? That kind of chocking? Because I don't see that as chocking.

I am not talking about Syracuse, and I never said it wouldn't be a disappointment and with our history like i said we need to get over that hump, but in general losing in the sweet 16 is never a choke

I understand now, I just hear it from so many people. If syracuse loses in the sweet sixteen this year every homer in this city will be saying "well we went 31-2 so thats a good season" it is just frustrating. always an excuse.

"You are, what your record says you are".
In the NCAA Tournament, our record of success beyond the Sweet16 isn't very good. We're like the San Diego Chargers of cbb & JB is our Norv Turner/Marty Schottenheimer. Good/Very good teams that get to a certain point but more-often-than-not, can't get over the hump. We make the Dance most every year, but cue the flame-out in the Sweet16.
We're past the stage of "moral victories", this program is now bigger than that. We have talent, the best & deepest team in school history, senior leadership & young stars. What possible excuse would we have if we can't go far this year?
This year is pivotal, IMO.

JB has been bucking his trends this year. 3-0 vs Louisville and Pitt attest to that. So there is hope he finds a way to win a Sweet 16 game. His struggles in that game are legendary and well documented so no need to go into them. I categorize it this way, just like UL and PU: I'll believe it when I see it. But to say "another 1 seed for Boeheim" is a little over the top. By my count he has played in the NCAA tournament with a 1 seed exactly two years. This will be the third. this idiot makes it sound like he's Duke where he gets a 1 seed and Greensboro 80% of the time.

You are familiar with a trend right? The point is (with the exception of Blake Griffin) we never should have been in that position to begin with. If our two veterans from the national championship season don't put up absolutely putrid stats i.e. Warrick's triple double of pts rebounds and tunrovers, then we aren't in the position to get daggered by Sorrentine. And using Onuaku's loss as a crutch is dumb. We were WINNING late in the game against Butler. We make AO out to be some Bill Russel/Shaquille/Billy Celluck hybrid and we should have beaten Butler without him.

Every season since the title we have lost to a lower seed except one. And in that one we were blown out. You can make excuses for each loss, but those data points form a trend.

And in every instance we "choked" we came out flat offensively and did nothing to negate that on the defensive end. Alabama, Vermont, Tx A&M, Oklahoma, Marquette, in every instance we came out just butt awful and not ready to play. We let those teams shoot lights out and basically played defense like we did against Cincy on Friday. I don't count the Butler game as a true choke job because of the circumstances (even though we should have won that thing up 4 late). In each of those other games we didn't have the offensive horses to get us out of the holes. This team has as many scoring threats, maybe more, than the 2003 team. That team was able to dig itself out against Okie St because they could score.

It's pretty simple. We need Good Scoop to show up, we need Kris, Brandon and CJ to get their offensive mojo going, we need Southerland to find that shooters zone he had down in Raleigh earlier this season, we need Fab to stop trying to block everything in sight and concentrate on rebounding, and we need Dion to be a supplemental scorer, not the guy having to drop 30 points a game to advance us. We need our offensive balance to return. If we get that and learn from our defensive lapses against Cincy, then we will be a very tough out.

Can someone clear up the #1 seedthing; I thought 2010 was out first #1 seed, but now I've read this is the third time we've had it. What was the other year then?

1980.

The fact that there is a lot of truth to the article is the very thing that makes it disturbing. If there is any element of honest self appraisal with this program it would include the acknowledgement that we have not achieved the type of deep run success that one would expect given how many appearances we've made in the past 30 years.
