Comments: We did well on first and second down runs and first down passes, (28-16), which set us up for good drives on most of our possession. On the another hand we did well on first and second down on defense, (30-19), which made the going tough for the Gophers. We gave up 30 yards on their first two first down passes, then 6 incompletions and two sacks. The lack of a healthy place-kicker was a disadvantage for us but they were the t4eam that went for 2 twice. There was one punt that did not go in favor of the punting team. But it was the key play of the game.

Comment: We about broke even in scrimmage plays but lost decisively in the kicking game due to injuries to our place-kickers and also in the penalty department. (Control the Controlables!). We lost offensively on first down runs but did well on second and third down runs. When we passed it was the reverse. We won a small majority of first and second down passes but did poorly on third down passes. (46-86). Young quarterbacks and mediocre receivers were the culprits there. But we also dominated on third down passes (85-47) so it appears that it’s just tough to complete passes on third down when the opposition is expecting you to pass. Of course, with a couple of exceptions, we did not face strong passing attacks this year. Ironically, considering the way things started, the strongest part of our team may have been our pass defense (252-199)

Comment: We were 7-6 and won the battle of the player 7 times and lost it 6 times. They were the same games. Sometimes the margin was deceiving, or at least different, (Penn State vs. Northwestern, Maryland, Pittsburgh), but it still was a pretty good predictor of the outcomes. I’ve been doing this for three years and in 38 games, the team that won the most plays has won 34 times, (the exceptions were the two Rutgers losses and the wins at Tulane and Missouri).
