Is this going to be the worst defense of all time? No one will take their foot off the gas because of our offense

The yards per play are skewed because of those 3rd quarter drives they scored in 5 plays or less.
Our defense when it gets to 3rd down isn’t that bad.
The problem is we give up way too many explosion plays of 25 yards +.

The secondary safety play has been terrible. The last drive of the game also was pathetic because of the soft shell we were playing.
Our defense wasn’t good yesterday but it can be cleaned up if we cut down the explosion plays for the opponent offense.

Yep. I want to see where we’d be if those bombs to Eskridge get removed. It’s not out of the question to believe that is fixable thi year.

Thing is...you deal with what you’ve done.

We let up 620 yards to Western Michigan. They should be no better than the 7th Best offense we see this year.

Ward needs some clean ups and the O needs to score.

gaining 600 and losing by 13 at home is hard enough.. we did last year though, i only find like 3 examples of that going back to 2000

1 more yard for us and they lose by 20.

Wonder what that would have done for the “hasn’t happened since” events.

3TD's in 5 consecutive plays, where they nearly drive the length of the field. Did that even take 60 seconds off the clock? 200+ yds, 21 points. Is that a record? That's a minute the defense would like back.

***edit***
6 consecutive WMU plays
223 yds
1 minute 44 seconds TOP
3 TD's
1 TD every 34 seconds

I think UL set the record a couple years ago against us..

Unfortutely I think Ward is a major part of the problem, the lack of blitzing, bizarre personnel decisions, and just some flat our embarrasing performances have marred his tenure here. Clearly he's here through the rest of the season and perhaps as some of the younger guys get more comfortable the D can come together but that third quarter was Grob esque.

How does that compare to Louisville’s 21-0 start in the Dome two years ago this week?

I think it was really close. I recall 3 TDs in 5 plays, each starting on their own side of the 50.

I don’t remember bizarre personnel decisions. The rest is apt though

Does our DL run any stunts? I don’t recall any but wasn’t watching that closely. I tried to watch Robinson every play he was in because I expected him to make the most noise. Looked like an outside rush every time that wasn’t overly quick and was easily picked up by the tackle over and over and over again.

It looked like our game plan on both sides of the ball was kept very vanilla vs WMU.

I’d expect more of the same vs Wagner.

Guess Dino doesn’t want to show any cards before FSU.

This, the D was so vanilla it felt like a pop Warner game. Perhaps as some have mentioned that was intentional but could we run at least a few blitzes or something to get pressure. The few times we did actually blitz they were so telegraphed Hellen Keller could see them coming.

i think they were trying to limit the options WM had in the running game and other than 2 plays that really happened. but still the Dline really didnt beat anyone 1-1 all game, perhaps Coleman is still not close to 100%

I mean, I get it, but this game was much bigger to get the W. If this was MTSU part 2 (who was yet again owned by Vandy by the way) then it was a huge uphill battle for a bowl.

The optimist in me says that everyone (staff, players) started believing the hype a little too early. Big lead, have the ball to start the 2nd half. Maybe it was good to experience that turnaround. Help prevent it again.

Pierce doesnt fumble we drive the field and go up 41-7, game over. instead we gave them a chance, then fell down driving again and it was game on.

I dont subscribe to the "showing cards " thing in D. Maybe on O, but not a defense that got lit up at the end of last year with the same scheme this year. We needed stops on friday night in the second half so i doubt we were holding back stunts or looks thinking about FSU in 3 weeks. A loss friday and the season may have been cooked.

SUPPOSEDLY THE SCHEME IS DIFFERENT THIS YEAR AND IT WAS DOING FINE FOR THE FIRST HALF, THEN THAT WR KEPT GETTING MATCHED UP WITH SCOOP AND ADDED ABOUT 200 YARDS WHILE WE WERE TREATING THE GAME LIKE AN PRESEASON GAME, THEN WE WENT BACK TO ACTUALLY PLAYING TO WIN AND THE DEFENSE WAS BETTER . IN SUMMARY ILL GIVE THE DEFENSE THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT THAT THIS GAME WAS THE WHOLE TEAM THINKING IT WAS GAME OVER SINCE COACH TOOK OUT DUNGEY
