I'm going to make a small gripe: Why do they test the bench press? Lower body strength is infinitely more important than how many times you can bench 225lbs.

I think the idea is that the 40, vertical leap, and broad jump, especially the latter two, test lower body power, whereas the bench press is really the only upper body thing they do.

I'd like to see them test core strength. Strong legs and arms with a weak core are pretty useless.

its like shooting free throws.

the higher the % doesnt necessarily mean you can play hoop worth a lick, but everybody has to take them at some point.

so its a good # to know.

and if your # sucks, well thats telling.

That's not totally true. Depends on the position.

In what football position does pushing something while on your back help? You're never caught in that position. sufandu had the right of it, too, that core strength is more important, as well. The bench works such a small % of muscles on the body compared to other lifts they should be testing instead.

It is a measure of overall upper body strength and power. For example, it is not good for an OL to let a defensive lineman get up into your body. It is obviously better to keep them off of you and away from your body with your arms. VERY important for OL and DL. You hear a lot of scouts talk about "punch" from an OL or DL, watch a portion of how most OL and DL are coached in practice and you will see how hand speed and arm strength/upper body are super important.

At the moment, the bench press is the only way to measure anything for the upper body, unless someone on here has a better way to do it.

There's an opportunity here for Cortland or Ithaca or some other D-3 with great facilities to throw together a small school combine. Charge a fee and whatever to cover basic expenses and some meals, but what a great recruiting tool for the school. Cortland ought to jump on it. "You know son, we're a good team, good school, Cortaca jug out draws some mid-majors, great facilities that heck even the NFL uses. And EVERY year, NFL scouts come to OUR campus looking for talent at our combine."

not a bad point, the jets practice there.

so theyve got have a top notch facility, or whatever a top notch facility is in jettieworld.

i just dont think enough d3 guys from NYS and surrounding territory would warrant the NFL's attention year in and year out.

isnt there territorial rights camps/workouts/tryouts too??

Don't think the territorial rights thing is done anymore. There's probably regional camps. I'd wager they'd get enough kids out of upstate NY and PA D3 schools, PA D2's and the Colgate/Cornell/Albany type joints to make it worth their while and that of scouts. If the scouts are coming to Syracuse anyway, what's a little jaunt down to beautiful downtown Cortland? Seems every year an Alfred, Ithaca, St. Lawrence etc has some sort of "prospect" story. The Arena and Canadian leagues might want to scout too.

Or they could do it in Albany. Some pathetic group of hacks out of New Jersey has some sort of outpost in that god-forsaken place.

Yeah I agree although the stuff they do generally indicates whether they have a strong core.

I don't know that anything at the combine stresses core that much, and with how much guys are pushed into lumbar hyperextension spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis are common injuries, especially among lineman. I suppose it's something that may be tested during the physical.
