can anyone else recall him playing so poorly? normally so consistent and reliable. He was putrid tonight. Suprised and happy this team pulled thru. As bad as that was, still interesting and promising to see they came out with the win with CJ playing awful

Even as a freshman I didn't see him this bad.

funny thing is, that was the first thing that came to my mind. I have never been like, wow, CJ is playing bad and killing us. Ever! throughout his whole career. Tonight was just bad for him..

He needs to adjust his game when a guy that can defend is put on him. I was hoping to see him try to post him up to try and shake it up a bit.

He played nearly as poorly against Georgetown last year, but that was with Otto Porter guarding him, and he still posterized the dude at the end to punctuate the win. This, however, was about as poor as I've seen him play overall. Every one of his shots was way too strong. No touch today.

that whole georgetown game was an abomination... That should be a game no one mentions. Was one of the more brutal games i have ever been to. I think he was just trying to do a little too much tonight but I think the offense was just poorly executed tonight.. A ton of air screens and useless dribbling. No half court execution tonight... none

He is trying to create offense by going one on one. That's not his game. You can see why he at best marginal for the NBA. I absolutely love CJ but he isn't a great one on one player creating off the dribble. He needs to capitalize when he has openings ...that requires other players to be threats and open the floor a little for him.

Continuing the Kris Joseph trend of a forward who I previously loved as a soph and Junior trying to "expand" his game and thus forcing it and trying to do too much as a senior. Hard to watch. I want the old CJ back.

It's another world when you're "the guy." It became a 4 on 4 game because CJ's man wasn't helping off him at all. We didn't have the offensive players to take advantage of this defensive strategy, tonight.

Yeah, I love CJ but tonight really resembled one of KJ's What games from his sr year.
I mean, he airballed about 3 layups tonight. oof

His biggest problem tonight was he forced too much when something wasn't there. He was that black hole that he showed glimpses of last year. He has to learn to give up the rock when nothing is there. Teams are surrounding him when he gets the ball because they know he'll try to force something.

No, that game was awesome. He's talking about the BET game. CJ was equally bad in that game but also had several nearly fatal mental errors right at the end. He totally redeemed himself with the poster dunk in OT, but it was his worst game in orange. Tonight was not quite as bad. Everybody has an off nite here and there. This team will play great in Maui.

I think CJ is similar to Todd Burgan in that he is a great side kick but not a true go to player.

Three C.J. concerns, two old (and unfixed) and one new this year:

1) The Black Hole;

2) Still can't use the right hand;

3) Adding a degree of difficulty to shots by stepping back or fading away. (You're 6'8" and have had no trouble getting your shot off for three years - don't ditch the form that's working for you!)

#2 is the reason I'm skeptical about Fair's NBA prospects.

As to the bigger picture, some of us were concerned about C.J.'s slow start last year. He ended up having a terrific year. Not hard to envision the same thing happening this season.

imo his jumper is better with a faster release. Hes got to get the ball 4-5 feet closer to the basket or bring back his lower dribble/jabstep lateral pullup from further out some if he isn't going to go all the way to the basket. Hes cut his explosivness in half moving to the perimeter. Instead he is taking his man one on one more with a higher dribble(which makes it even harder) because hes trying to get closer to the basket instead of arcing around it.

If he had southerland returning or a Wes senior Nichols on the perimeter he could be averaging 20 in acc play. Until he finds a perimeter helper though, maybe he should try to find a way to post up in the high post with Jerami in the halfcourt. If its servicable go with what you already have mastered.

Were You reading my post about the 97 comparison? CJ and Todd have almost identical stats as Juniors. Some players just can't handle being the main option on the team and are better suited as the 2nd or 3rd. I would like CJ to take on the role that John Wallace did in 1996. John was always the second fiddle on previous years teams behind Moten But really stepped it up his senior year and carried that team.

St Francis sure defended CJ well. If other schools start doing the same things CJ will have to change the way he makes his first step driving to the basket. He's pretty talented. I imagine he will watch the film and figure out a way to improve his game.

I missed that. It would have been nice if CJ were ready to take on the John Wallace role, but for whatever reason, whether it be topped out potential or reluctance to expand his game, he is essentially the same player as last year. Incidentally, I never considered Burgan the leader of that team, despite what the media kept trying to push. Otis Hill was the best player and leader that year.

1 game aside, I think Fair is improved from last year. He is able to get off tougher shots while maintaining his excellent mid-range game. Also expanded his 3 point game to all areas of the floor.

I still think C.J. can lead this team on a deep run in March.

Yeah, you're right. He's definitely not John Wallace level, he's never made that huge jump like Wallace did form junior to senior, but he's steadily improved every year. I will reserve final judgment for when we play a couple high level teams that take away his left hand.

CJ played 37 mins and had 7 pts on 15% shooting. Coleman played half as many mins and had twice as many points on 100% shooting.

Just a thought. We haven't seen CJ on the right side of the court up top this year. Especially with Ennis' and Cooneys ability to take a defender left.
For someone that likes his left handed dribble, he would be dribbling towards the middle of the court more instead of away from it. He could utilize a high screen to go left from one of our bigs when opponents try to push him right, and with his sidestep stepback jumper centers have to really stay on him. That gives him time to blowby them, or find a teamate like Grant/Gbinije cutting downlow when he doesn't pullup.Not to mention the pressure on opponents centers, as if they don't have enough already with our 3 headed monster. We all remember his dunk on Otto Porter...

Gbinije worked hard on this in the offseason, and JB had high hopes he would be able to do this. CJ might not have the ballhandling of Gbinije, but he does have 10X the pullup jumper, he won't be going around screens going right, but dribbling left he can protect the ball, and its a different story. We haven't seen our guards outside Gbinije utilizing the screen and roll, and it has been better that Gbinije doesn't utilize one and just blows by so far. Ennis as a point will have to utilize one sometime this season alittle experience doing that could help some.

Yeah, that's cool and all but I really don't want to post every other game line from the past two seasons and put these two side to side.

I'm sure there were games that Michael Jordan had less points than his teammate.
