How on earth did we lose that game? Lack of discipline, blown coverages, horrendous communication, coaching miscues and failed execution. That's how.

First off, kudos to Maryland for making plays and to CJ Brown for playing a great game. Made good reads all day and kept good composure the whole game. Had he connected on the 2 or 3 missed throws to his wide open WRs way downfield, this game would've really been blown open. Edsall and staff called a great offensive gameplan that completely exploited our weaknesses. Yet again, the blueprint for beating Bullough's D is on tape. With that being said, Edsall & Co can resume pounding salt.

I'm still hoarse and likely will be until Wednesday or Thursday. What. That game was the epitome of frustrating. For every good play we made, we shot ourselves in the foot twice. 589 yards of offense and 20 points with the last TD coming in garbage time? That simply cannot happen, ever. Our offense looked good for the most part, but stupid penalties and horrific bonehead plays killed most of the momentum in its tracks.

Had Hunt been able to make a few really easy throws, our offensive numbers would've been that much better. He deserves alot of the blame, but certainly not all of it. The fact that Hunt had a "communication" issue on that pick 6 is inexcuseable. You don't throw the ball to a wide open DB. I've watched that replay about 10 times and it gets worse every time I watch it. That killed an impressive drive. His mechanics looked awful during that game. He badly threw behind or above receivers on about 6-7 times. All of those throws were easy and would've resulted in 1st downs. Need him to step up and make good throws here. It doesn't need to be perfect, just catchable. The offensive facemask flag on that run to the outside was a joke. Terrel, let go. You had him beat when you stiff-armed him. You know this isn't the rodeo, I mean What. Busted drive.

As bad as Hunt was with his arm, he had yet another strong performance on the ground. That's what sets him apart from the other QB's on this roster and why he is the starter IMO. People clamoring for Wilson's arm have a right, but if you are an opposing DC, it wouldn't be difficult to gameplan for Wilson. Bring pressure and play press coverage would completely send Wilson into an oblivion. Hunt is our best option right now, and as I said last week, he controls our destiny. I'm still bullish on the kid, but he really needs to focus on his arm.

Dropped passes were an issue as well. On that first drive, Broyld dropped a 6 ball that hit him in stride in the hands. McFarlane dropped a big gainer.

Not sure what is going on with this rotation at RB. It is ridiculously confusing and ruins momentum on drives. I understand that McD wants fresh legs and that the 5 RBs all have their own packages, but there is WAYYYY too much subbing in and out. Moore should be in on any 3rd and short. Why Morris was ever in during that 3rd and 2 is unfathomable. Maryland had no answer to what we were doing with our run game up to that point, so you switch it up? Yikes. Still not a fan of PTG on sweeps or off tackle, but he is productive inside. The Erv Philips stuffed run may have been the most predictable play I've ever seen (besides that blocked punt of course). That kid needs the ball in his hands more. He lined up in the slot most of the game, but never saw one ball. He was open every play. Wide open on a few. McD needs to pick a RB or 2 and stick with them.

Hickey, you know better. What a horrible penalty.

Super disappointed in Esk, Davis and the rest of the secondary. There needs to be some very evident attitude adjustments if this team is going to win any more games. Not liking what I'm seeing out of many of our "leaders". A little too much "I" and not enough "we" IMO.

Shafer was waving the white flag by not going for it in Maryland territory on 4th and short. Hunt or Moore could've tripped and gotten a first down, but you punt instead down 3 scores. Unreal. Also, he cannot ever get a flag called on himself. I love Shaf and his emotion as much as anyone, but that was ridiculous that he got nailed for unsportsmanlike conduct. He looked like JB out there sans the flinging of a sports jacket.

Lots of mistakes made by both the players and the coaching staff. I am getting worried, but some of you need to get off the ledge. This board was diseased Sat afternoon/night. I took one peak and came back today for the first time. Step away from the keyboard and have a bottle of scotch. Just don't post when you're livid, lmao!

I was miserable Sat night and yesterday. I've moved on and am super curious about this ND game. I'm predicting either a Cuse win or a ND blowout. I don't think we see anything in between that.

I'd probably still be miserable to if Suh and Co. hadn't completely stuffed Rodgers and the Pack yesterday. What a beautiful day to be a Lions fan.

Was about to throw my plate at the sports bar, I was so frustrated. I think I'm coming down on the pessimistic side of things at the moment. It's been long enough that some of this stuff should be fixed by now, period. (IMO)

Especially on offense, where we are featuring almost the same cast of characters as last year. And Miller doesn't seem to be the problem. How many more years are we going to wait to have an effective offense? 6th year post-GRob, we should be there already.

My 2 year old daughter picks out better outfits than that. It's almost like they woke up late for the game and just threw on the first thing they saw.

Seriously, I may be onto something. In a game where not much made sense, our red zone execution matched our uniforms perfectly. If we were wearing the orange lids we would've scored 45.

Great post Rocco. Although I didn't think the board was horrible over the weekend. People were critical but I think most if it was insightful. Usually I don't read for a day or two after a loss but I only noticed a couple threads that got silly. Maybe the mods just did a good job cleaning it up.

598 yds of offense. We are there already. Shafer lacks discipline as a coach(Dabo incident, 15 yd bench foul) and I'm wondering if it is trickling down to the players. Yes I still like Shafer but I don't know many coaches who act so undisciplined on the sideline.

We're not, because we didn't score enough points off that. That is not an effective offense. And it should be by now. I have had it with the stupid penalties, drops, bad throws, etc. Every week it's "those things can be corrected." Then correct them already.

I think you forgot just exactly how horrible Grob's offenses were. We averaged about 258 yards per game his first 2 years(I didn't look up the last two because I really don't want to relive that whole period of time). We more than doubled that yesterday. Discipline is the problem, not offensive talent or scheme. That's a huge difference between now and the Grob years.

I think back to the summer when we saw all those "fun" pool party photos at HCSS's house; is he trying to be too palsy? A HC should be respected and feared by his players, they shouldn't feel their HC is all palsy walsy with them. Shafer may be a "nice" guy, but the HC is like a naval captain, respect and discipline are more crucial than friendship...

That's not the reason. I think he's plenty tough on them. It's not mutually exclusive.

Well said Rocco and good job waiting a couple days to gain some perspective. I agree with pretty much everything you said.

It wasn't as bad as the Nova game, but it was still bad in my book. People always have a right to complain, but it's like rubbing salt in an open wound for me. Hunt is our starter and Shafer isn't going to get fired anytime soon... just to clear up some of the things...

This stuff is fixable.

If they get it together, watch out... If

nice you put down in one thread the exact same thing I said in multiple threads. Plus Hickey should have been called for a few holding penalties as I think on the first series he wrapped up a defensive lineman around the neck for a take down.

I think what pissed most of us fans off was the statistical domination against probably the weakest defense in the country. 589 yards is a total joke for the points we scored

Maryland's defense is ranked 119 out of 124 and I would expect them to be in last place by the end of the year by a lot as the other teams scheduled up in contests while Maryland is about to face the big ten grind

Well we're just in complete opposite states of mind then. I'll be honest though, the packer loss has completely wiped that Orange loss out of my mind.

I was thinking this after the game as well. I actually think we are less penalized than under Marrone, though, and that is a big sign of discipline. I am wondering whether "in game" focus is an issue? That may be something where team leaders, players on the bench, can play a big role. Keep your teammates focused and goal oriented. The head coach doesn't have time for that.

You guys have dominated the division for the past 2 decades winning half of all division titles since 1993, the last year the Lions won the Division. We haven't won the freaking division in 2 decades. Oh Lord

The leaders on this team need to start stepping up. Lots of idiotic things going on during the game and they need to take THEIR team by the horns and set them straight. Actually a few of our leaders need to wake up in general.

coaching issues, qb passing issues, receivers that cannot catch, and secondary that cannot cover---otherwise we are fine. they still trash talk, think they are better than they are.

teams with huge leads will tend to give you yards but not scores. it's all about time.

That's not a bad theory, but Saturday's game doesn't really follow that trend.

At the time that Maryland opened up the 3 score lead on the INT return, we already had 300 yards, it wasn't halftime. On the next drive we put up another 60, still before halftime. I'm thinking Maryland probably didn't want us going into the half getting it back to a 2 score game with that momentum.

2nd half, when MD commanded a 3 score lead for most of it, we only had 230 yards.
