In response to this seemingly impartial Thamel article, where he does nothing more than tell it like it is...

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/09/s...head-for-uconn.html?smid=tw-nytimes&seid=auto

A few of their fans displayed their respect and admiration for their long-time rivals...

"He is a Syracuse douche bag who should be worrying about his own alma mater. They should be worrying about how to protect ball boys and how to prevent drug dealers hanging out with their basketball team."

"It wasn't long ago Fruits got their own APR problem. NCAA hammer will drop on that school soon enough and I hope this Thammel scumbag will be brave enough to write an article about his own school."

"Sucks to be an alum of Syracuse, the most dirty program in the land. Molesters, drug users, drug user abettors...hey, all good."

"Nothing like seeing UConn crushing SU in student selectivity, admissions and academic rankings. Must be so hard, so hard, to watch."

"Thamel could f___ Bernie Fine's wife up her a__ while snorting coke off of Boeheim's flaccid p____."

Honestly, if someone wrote an article like that about SU, he would be crucified on this board.

The article basically focused on every negative bit of news revolving around UConn, and didn't give any potential bright sides.

There may have been a lot of facts in the article, but it was a pretty negative article just the same.

Gotta give credit where credit is due. Thats a pretty good line.

Reading comprehension not a strong suit at UConn, despite its academic ranking and selectivity. Not sure exactly what Thamel said that warranted those type of responses.

You really think so? I thought it was pretty decent.

Gottleib says he thinks we're probably the 3rd best team in America, and he gets responses that match those Thamel is getting on the UConn board.

People here would be killing Thamel if he wrote an article like that about SU

Yeah, but that's Gottlieb. To be honest, I was nervous when I heard Thamel was snooping around after the Fine stuff broke last November. It still remains to be seen whether that shoe is going to drop.

All I see is blah blah blah I'm a dirty uconn fan, and then some more blah blah blah. That's all I'm getting out of it...

They are mad because they are in a conference and won't be seeing another tourney for a loooooooooong time. I'd be mad to.

Well, it's really no mystery that UCONN has produced absolutely ZERO notable alums.

He's throwing a bunch of stuff against the wall and seeing what sticks.

He suggests that the Uconn administrators may "nudge Calhoun" out the door, despite acknowledging later in the article that the school president loves Calhoun, the new AD has no intention of telling him to leave, and Calhoun himself said he has no intention of retiring.

He suggests that Oriakhi may transfer, only to later point out that Oriakhi has been quoted as having no interest in doing so.

He suggests that Drummond was "recruited late in the summer" just to mock the NCAA sanctions. That's not exactly how it all went down. By the way, there's not a single coach in the entire country that would have turned down Andre Drummond, scholarship or no scholarship.

Not sure how you can write a "decent" article discussing Uconn's future without at least mentioning 1) the practice facility that's scheduled to be completed by 2014, 2) the fact that the APR tournament ban is still not set in stone, and if overturned, would render this whole discussion useless and 3) the fact that Kevin Ollie, at the very least, has been a successful recruiter since joining the coaching staff.

My take is that he was saying that UConn is something of an enigma. Defending National Champs that could repeat based on their talent just as easy as they could crash and burn the first weekend of the Tournament. I didn't find the article that derogatory and certainly not to the level of the responses that were posted by your fans. Whatever, best of luck next week and I hope we don't have to meet again this season.

90% of the article is about the future of the program, not this year's team. I don't think you'll find a single Uconn who wouldn't agree that this current team is an enigma.

Oh well, UConn just lost. Since Tuesday the pub has all been good: winning 13 post season games in a row, on a roll, right where they want to be, jelling as a team, on a mission, etc., etc. When you lose, the focus often changes to the future. Still, the article doesn't warrant the level of response that UConn fans posted, imo.

I'd be annoyed if I read that about SU too. Don't blame them for being pissed. Maybe they could tone it down a bit but geesz... they are just posting thoughts on an article, not actually writing one for the NYT.

Some of them are acting like Jim Boeheim wrote the article.

I agree that Thamel was over-the-top, but what makes me laugh at them is their overreaction and venom toward Syracuse. Just because Thamel once attended the school.

Want venom? Go read the Marquette or Providence boards. On the subject of Syracuse many Marquette fans sounds like the wife who catches her husband in bed with her two best friends. Providence fans think Syracuse is a cesspool of sin (but they are even more pissed we have "betrayed" the Big East by taking our filthy ways on the [tobacco] road).

Agreed.

Truth is, most of what is contained in that article is true--whether they want to accept it or not. But the article definitely was harsh--Thamel certainly didn't pull any punches.

But their fanbase is collectively the biggest bunch of douchebags I've ever seen. Anyone who has attended the BET knows exactly what I'm talking about.

I stopped going to the Marquette board. They rival UK fans in delusional thought.

The whole article was written as polar opposites of events. He kept saying this "could" happen or nothing could happen for everything he brought up. And everything he brought up is possible and some of your own fans have talked about those same possibilities although at different times.
