Class of 2023 WR Cole Weaver (GA) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (1/7/26)

This is from close friend, who's a former Miami, OH QB and Current Booster when I asked him about Weaver...

"Big kid. Good in zone. Very emotional and immature. We could have kept him but he thought his value was more than we wanted but could pay."
Makes sense. Type of guy Fran loves trying to harness. He has a chance to prove it on a higher stage now.

For a 6’5” “intermediate” receiver who had around the same amount of catches as TE Dan Villari (And i’m a huge fan of what Dan Villari turned himself into) did in 4 games with Angeli, i’m not as enthused as others.

I'm enthused about 45 catches for ~650 yards.

We need experience to go with our young returning nucleus. Weaver is big, and started 14 of his last 15 games at Miami OH. He'll be a nice "add" to the WR corps for that reason.

Proven commodity. If it was a guy who hadn't produced and had size that people were pointing to as the main reason for why they were excited, I'd be there with you. In this case, I think he's a fine addition.

Looks to me like he knows how to move to the ball, control his body, has glue hands and can use his size for mismatches - you can do a lot with someone like that in the intermediate game in this offense.

Agreed. A competent wide receiver with that kind of size and ability to catch the ball could be the ultimate safety valve in this offense.

Idk if we get another receiver in the portal unless he’s a stud

I think the staff feels good going into next year with:

RB:
Miller
Johnson

WR:
Calvin Russell
Weaver
Merriweather
Boobie Johnson
Darien Williams
Tyshawn Russell
Gough

TE:
Smith
Clement
One of Bowman and Bacheiye

Still need to add 2 QBs and 1-2 O-lineman that can play right away. Think they are going to focus hard on safeties, linebackers and D-line from here on out. Add 2 safeties, 2 linebackers and 3 d-lineman
Seems like your list is just the guys you think will get significant PT. So why do you keep leaving Hill out from being mentioned with the RB's? Your scaring me. Quit it. ;)
I added a few names to the list in bold text. No idea how much play they would get but they would be options if needed. I don't know about WR. Is 11 enough spots? We carried 13 last year. I feel like we need 1 more. We've got tall and rangy covered. I think we should add another 5-'11 to 6-2" explosive type of player.

RB:
Miller
Johnson
Tylik Hill
Malachi Coleman
Shavane Anderson Jr.

WR:
Calvin Russell
Weaver
Merriweather
Boobie Johnson
Darien Williams
Tyshawn Russell
Gough
Wilfong
McFadden
BJ Garett
Phoenix Henriques
Edit: Hatcher

TE:
Smith
Clement
Bowman
Bacheiye
Elijah Washington Baker
Carter Bashir

Hatcher is coming back.

This guy seems a little salty, lol. Clearly his value was higher, going from MAC to ACC

One of the Kerr twins moved to RB as well (Davion vs Davien. . I think). We have 6 RBs now, we may be done there.

Thought Wilfong was a TE also?

Think offense is set aside from QB and OL at this point unless a bpa pops available unexpectedly at a skill position.

Yes a 6’2 explosive WR would be a amazing add hopefully we can get some on campus.

He’s a WR

No on Wilfong being a TE. Assume you are thinking of Elijah Washing-Baker. Both came in tall and thin but Wilfong is much thinner at just 6'6-185 lbs. EWB was listed at 6'7" and 245 lbs last season. He has added some good weight since he came in.

The starting QB for Miami (OH) was hurt in game eight. The two backups were crappy.

The team as a whole had a completion percentage under 50%.

I think Cole would have had much better numbers with a more functional passing attack.
That is interesting because he actually had better later season numbers. His first 4 games were his weakest. He didn't even get a catch in the 3rd game of the season against UNLV so that game is not listed for him.

Cole Weaver 2025 Stats per Game - NCAAF - ESPN

Looks like just a slow start until he got his legs under him. But who knows how much better he would have been at the end of the year with his starting QB playing. And even he wasn't that great as you stated. The starter had 58.6% completion % while the two back-up QB's after that were 39.8% and 44.2%. Yuck.

I hope that translates into a great blocking WR too. He has the size.

immature is the exact opposite adjective I’d use to describe him.

he’s a baller on the field.

speed doesn’t jump out of the page at you but has incredible hands & a big frame to match.

not sure what the donor’s talking about, maybe he knows something I don’t.

🤷‍♂️

edit: side note. his teammates are going to love him
