Class of 2023 WR Johntay Cook (TX) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (5/1/25)

JOHNTAY COOK II WR PORTAL FROM TEXAS
# 1 6' 0" 185/ 4.35 40

Former Texas wide receiver Johntay Cook II was arrested for a second time in two weeks. The wide receiver's downfall has turned into more of a spiral over the past few months. Cook and the Longhorns mutually parted ways with in November to transfer to the Washington Huskies, was dismissed from the Huskies in January and has now been arrested twice.

If Johntay Cook didn't have speed, the story might have ended there. But a 4.3-second 40-yard dash is hard to ignore. Speed like that gets recruited—again and again. No matter what's gone down off the field, scouts, coaches and fans all know one thing: Cook can run.

Visiting Syracuse April 23 - 25

With this guy and Tuggle. Normally, I would say this is a bad idea to bring them in that had some issues at previous stops. But it seems like Fran believes he can provide the support and resources to make them mature men. So I’m all on board. At the least he gets one or both of them back on track in life (seems like only room for one though). Anything greater than that holy moly, we got some FAST receivers with SKY HIGH potential.

Glass houses... most of us have driven over the speed limit and/or consumed substances that some would take issue with based on 90s pr earlier propaganda. It's tough being a teen or early 20s and getting it right 100% of the time. I'd say damn near impossible even...

also, not directed at you in the slightest to clarify

The property theft charge is a red flag to me.

The weed charge is less about the possession, and more about not being cognizant of optics after a first arrest. You'd hope he would have learned a lesson and try to stay out of the public eye while rehabbing his image.

My guess is the opposite: he wants attention because he needs help. You don't go from the honor roll to petty theft because you lack a brain. If there's anyone who can see through his behaviors and figure out what's troubling this young man, it's Fran. Maybe there's a chance he can straighten out and reach his potential. Up to Fran to figure out if the journey is worth it for SU.
