WR Preview (Post-Standard)

No doubt we have talent at the WR position.
Question is do we have a QB(after surgery) that can spin that ball?
Can he get the ball to the receiver AS he's getting open?
Can he check down to a 2nd and 3rd option when given time?
Can he not force the ball into double and triple coverage?

I'd (almost) like to see Beck/Shrader throw the ball to Gadsden just ONCE against Colgate and WMU
and have guys like Hatcher, Alford and Jones have 3-5 catches in those games. That way Purdue has to be "honest" with their coverages.

These games are a balance. You want your starters to play early and put up big numbers so you can then put in the reserves and get them experience. The stars improve their stats in these games for the year to boost their season averages for improving their draft resume and ability to get on post season lists and gain awards. Those things can be important for the program as well. But yes I agree with wanting to get experience for others as well.

Cb...Gadsden in regular season had 54 receptions. RETURNING players had a total of 61.
Gadsden is one hard-working phenomenal talent. You and I know it. NFL scouts know it.
We've got to spread the wealth so that the opposition won't/can't double and triple team him.
That way we win more games and Gadsden still has a solid season.

I can tell you that the surgery was minor and Garret is fully recovered. He's 100% ready to go. Not sure that helps with any of your questions, though.

Excited about this group. I probably say that every year. But we know Gadsden is legit. Alford just needs to keep improving (he's good for a big play per game). Jones can hopefully stay healthy.

Pena and Adams are great 4th and 5th options. Hatcher and Brown probably need another year to develop, maybe they can impact later in the season if/when we do suffer the inevitable injuries.

Allen being such a weapon in the passing game helps open these guys up even more.

The group is intriguing and the potential is there but I feel like we've been saying that for the last 4-5 years. Gadsden is Cleary legit I don't think anyone remotely disputes that and everyone should enjoy what will almost assuredly be his final year here. Jones showed he could be a good redzone target but as you noted he really needs to stay healthy as you could Tell when good teams doubled Gadsden we struggled to find that secondary option.

The rest of the crew I am unfortunately just not that high on outside of maybe Pena again if he can stay healthy which has been an issue every year. Alfords big play ability is great but you can't have a starting WR who has six catches in 7 games or whatever it was last year ( no exageration), its not viable at this level. We have to find away to get him involved or get someone else on the outside who can contribute more consistency. I feel like were on year 3 of hearing how Long and Hatcher are about to break out yet they never see the field and when they do finally get in its meh. I think Adams is a true wild card, showed flashes but his PT was inconsistent. Would like to see him get a longer look.

I really hope Brown or one of the frosh impress and force early PT. Syracuse desperately needs a young WR or 2 to break out. You don't want to look to far ahead but with Gadsden likely gone and Jones out of eligibility next year already looks scary for the WR position. As good as SU was in the portal this off-season I think they made a mistake not pursuing a transfer, they needed a proven option to go with Gadsden, way to many question marks at the position after him especially when the TE position is a blackhole.

Agreed. And I think that this group could take a large step forward in terms of overall quality, without a big jump being needed by many of these players. Jones needs to be legit -- not a tall order, given that he got injured but had rave reviews heading into last season. Alford needs to be an increment better. Ditto Pena, Hatcher, and Brown.

Suddenly, we'd have a dependable group, surrounding an all conference / NFL caliber guy leading the unit.

Solid, dependable group with improved production.

I hope that is the case. I don't think we have seen what SHrader can do with a healthy right arm.
That sideline pic in the Pinstripe bowl showed there was something waaaaaay wrong with his rt. arm.
Everyone is talking up the QBs from UNC and FSU. IF Shrader is, and can stay healthy, he'll be every bit as good as those two.

There's definitely a part of me that says I'm just going through the annual preseason optimism, and reality will hit.

The real wild card with this whole group is probably Beck, and how he uses all the pieces. I hope we're not going to play "we need to have a TE" football with guys who are either too small or too big to be TEs. Just figure out how to get rid of the ball quicker if your front 5 can't handle the pass rush.

As for Alford, he finished strong, and I recall his blocking was pretty good toward the end too. So have to hope he just keeps building on it.

I have no expectations for Long and Hatcher. But like you, I'm intrigued by Adams. Maybe Beck gives him the chance that Anae didn't.

Any idea what Jones Purdue injury was? Dislocation, torn muscle, ligaments?

I get the preseason optimism angle.

But again, it doesn't feel like much improvement is needed for this group to catapult up the conference rankings. Pena and Alford have both played -- a lot. At the end of last season, Alford became more productive, and made a number of really impressive catches in key situations. Now, he needs to be more consistent. But he'll also benefit in the Jamal Custis deep sideline role if the OL can give Shrader a bit more time to throw cleanly. Wouldn't be a surprise to see him take it up a notch as a junior, due to a variety of factors. Pena was dependable, but got knicked up frequently. Perhaps the extra 10 pounds will help him absorb hits a little better, because otherwise the productivity was there.

If Jones validates what the coaches say about him, it is going to take a LOT of pressure off of OG. Or at minimum will force teams to not double OG indiscriminately. And if they do, having a #1 caliber threat playing opposite OG will position our offense to burn defenses that gamble on trying to take OG away and dare us to throw to other players. We haven't seen enough of Jones to know what his full capabilities are yet, but I'm encouraged by what the coaches are saying [and said last year].

Adams and Hatcher played a little bit last year, and flashed. Can they be a little more consistent?

Brown -- TBD, but he looked good in spring practice two years in a row, so he's got some potential, and has now been in the program for a full year, so he should be acclimated to the college game and know the playbook.

Seems to me that the optimism isn't just about wishful thinking, but warranted. Very excited to see what Jones / Alford bring to the table in 2023. IF those two can provide some consistent complimentary production next to OG, and IF the offensive line improves pass blocking, this WR unit could surprise.

Alford is good for 1 for 20+ a game. One of the stranger players I can remember, to be honest. He should be getting 3-4 catches a game, not less than 2.

He had 13 catches in 11 games prior to BC and The Bowl game which includes 4 games with 1 catch and two with zero. Has to be way more consistent if he's gonna be a starter.

If healthy Jones has NFL skills
Alford needs to be targeted more.
OG is OMG
All three of these guys have NFL measurables.

Is he a strange player?

Or has he just not shown himself to be the difference maker a lot of our fellow posters think he should be?

I remain skeptical.

I would love for him to make me look stupid for not believing.

He lacked the ability to get open in tighter space. Doesn’t have the knack to find the slightest of openings like OG. I am hoping he took a big step forward! He had the tools, I think he just needs to tighten up route running in shorter route scenarios

IMO, our catching options are:

OG by a country mile

LQA

Everyone else is either in prove it or won't ever make it. The best non OG catch I saw last year was an incomplete pass that was a high point catch out of bounds by, I think, Jones from CDRW that he almost got his foot down.

Someone needs to make a serious leap.

It was Hatcher.

I think the real wild card is one of the “other” TEs. If we can finally get one of them to step up and be a legitimate receiving threat, Beck has the opportunity to move Gadsden around ever more creating even greater mismatches.
