Class of 2023 WR Tyshawn Russell (PA) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (12/22/24)

Just remember, any scholarships over 85 must be paid out of the $20.5 million pot designated to pay athletes. It’s less money available to pay ALL athletes on campus. I’m not sure all the coaches at SU would be happy about that, unless the money comes out of the football percentage.

South Carolina fans really liked him after freshman year. They thought he had excellent upside and good connection with sellers. He was in their two deep coming out of fall camp and ended up not playing and redshirted. Not exactly sure what happened but there seems to be good potential here with 3 years to play.

Well right now, and I’m still carrying McCord, LQA, and Sparrow, the roster would be 103.

The extra scholarship cost is capped at 2.5M. Most schools will allocate 15M to football so I assume we will be at 10-12 and the extra scholarship cost will come out of the football pot making that 12-15 for us as far as the accounting.

Nobody other than football basketball and maybe a few dollars for lax is coming out of that revenue sharing pot anyways. I think this is the right play for us.

Agree. From a statistics perspective the only way you can compete with the factories while bringing in mostly high 3 stars is to bring in a whole lot of them. You pay to keep your recruiting hits, your misses transfer out, and you bring in a huge class again the next year. You will inevitably end up with mostly 4 star quality players on the field using this strategy. Mathematically there is almost no way this won't be extremely effective given 3-4 years for it to work itself out.

I also wonder if Russell coming in means Darien Williams will start out at corner? I know that was talked about initially but then the signing day tweets had him as a WR.

We need to upgrade the speed and athleticism at defensive back.

sweet, I’m happy with every transfer cause Fran approved them. Clearly targeting transfers with plenty of eligibility, I like it for the direction of the program. The depth is unlike anything I’ve seen here at cuse.

Precisely. This is the best way of retaining guys for less money than a factor too as you’re counting on them taking a little less to stay with Fran too. It’s sort of a moneyball approach.

I'm sure they know exactly what they are doing.

Bishop McDevitt has been a school that has produced a lot of talent that we miss out on way too much. Nice to start opening up that pipeline. Easy drive up 81 to the Cuse. Russell has a build and speed that could move to other positions.
They have played in a lot of state championship games. They had a long losing streak in them that was broken Russell's senior season. And it was in large part due to him.

He caught 4 touchdowns in the state championship game. Had a huge day.

Also an outstanding basketball player.

We're going 4 wide a lot of the time. We need depth and quality to run the offense we want to run.

We also didn't have adequate deep threats after only a couple injuries last season.
Exactly

A proper wr room needs around 3-4 players that are legit deep threats (laser 4.3-4.4 range)

Last year we had Zeed (personal issues), Hatcher (skill/effort issues) and Gil (still lacks physicality). I don’t think any of the Fr are at that level speed wise?

With Hatch hurt, (and unreliable when healthy) we are down to only Zeed and Gil who both have uncertainties surrounding them

I don’t think adding 2 or 3 speed guys seems unreasonable given our current stable is chock full of bigger more physical types (JRS/Ross/Hornsby/Tremble)
