Anyone else a little bit nervous about the article today that stated Erv will be lining up in the tight end position often in the running game? That's where he'll be needed for blocking purposes. Lewis seems the better, more natural run blocker, but I can just envision Erv getting absolutely blown up by some of the ACC's linebackers.

I trust the staff, but that's a scary thought. He can be such a weapon, but I'm not sure he's going to be a great blocker in that position. Another concern is if he doesn't cut it blocking for the run game, do they telegraph the run by putting Lewis in on running plays?

Needless hand-wringing at this point in the game, but I'm getting them stretched out so I can be prepared for the season! :D

More than one way to block. RB's typically can go low and do the job well enough. I'd also be the play is going opposite side.

that's not a good thing to tell the defense where a play is going. defeats the purpose of being so tricky with formations

i'm sure lester expected more out of dunkelberger and hoped they could teach broyld to block

teams like kansas state get big slow fullback bowling balls with some hands and line them up in different spots

maybe ameen moore should be our hybrid and just let philips be a WR

Well sure. It goes opposite most of the time - set up - and the. Goes same side with Erv diving at the legs of a LB to spring whatever.

I think you're underestimating the express back by a metric ton.

if it were that easy, you'd see a lot more smaller faster tight ends

Nervous? Not until I see visual evidence to be. Intrigued? Absolutely. You can't have Erv in there and only pass or the d will drop 7 or 8 everytime they see him. Likewise, you can't only run when Ben is in there because he is a more physically gifted blocker. A lot comes down to pre snap reads and the staff trusting Hunt to call audibles at the line. Say what you want about Hunt's throwing ability but he is a smart dude and seems to have the requisite confidence in himself and from the staff heading into the season.

There are not a lot of teams with RB/Slot WR/TE dual roles. Some look like RB (Erv) and others like WR/small fast TE (Lewis).

Not saying it's easy or that you don't give up something - just that the trade off will be worth it.

Crow pie or crow scone or crow sherbet? Want to know in advance ;).

I highly doubt erv will be in a 3 point stance. Receivers crack block all the time, which will be the only case that he will ever have to stick it to a linebacker.

i think there is a reason for that

We'll see. Things always get picked apart when they are new. Without even looking I'd bet every single meaningful innovation was meant with similar comments. Not a good reason not to try it.

Nope. Not enough data at this point. I'll see how it's employed in actual game situations before worrying prematurely.

yes

If this materializes, I wouldn't be at all surprised that Erv is out for the season after the LSU game. Hope he can do it, but...sheeeesh!

Doesn't Georgia Tech use formations where runningbacks are lined up like tight ends and run options, jet sweeps, and the like in those formations?

erv will probably chip with the right tackle

Yes. My understanding is, more often than not, the wing or X back will be involved in combo blocks with the Tackle on the DE. In theory, that's what makes the 'hybrids" so unique. It's relatively a lot easier to find guys who can swing from the slot to WR to RB. It's a lot more difficult to find guys who do all that AND block like at TE at the point of attack. Erv must be one strong/tough SOB.

If last year was the "*** it" offense this season is the "what the Hell" offense. And I mean this as a compliment compliment. Let's get weird and just try everything. Not like we'll be any worse than last season.
