Damn nature, you scary. If you look carefully, the seal does not retrieve the octopus after he hits the kayaker with it. It was an intentional act. If they are chasing a salmon they sometimes go within a foot of wading fishermen. If you whistle they will surface and look around.
Sealions regularly follow right alongside kayakers which is sort of scary as they are much larger than seals and typically travel in packs. There might be evidence that they can attack a kayak although they are non-threatening to divers. When killer whales are around they will jump up on the docks. They have been known to reach up and bite people standing on a dock.
Whales occasionally surface alongside small boats. However, if a boat touches them they can get aggressive and corner the boat each time it tries to get away. Upon rare occasion they can ram and sink a small boat like they did to a just-launched sailboat right outside the Hoonah harbor a couple of years ago.
The seal was questioned after the incident, he said "The jerk called me a freaking otter."
