You never know who'll you'll run into at the Dome

Pretty low-key "glory days:rolleyes:" back in the 70's, 80's for that highly respected sport (hmm), women's basketball. I did play on the same team that SU's first scholarship womens' player did after college, center Sheila Nash and later on SU's center Martha Mogish. Also played with/or against really good players like Vera Jones, Felisha Legette, Sue Ludwig, Christy Palumbo, Beth Mowins (yes the same one), Eileen Emmons & Kathy McInerny (Lemoyne Hall of Fame members), Eileen Smith Edsall (yes, his wife who played for SU's basketball team), Marva Cook, Teresa Quilty, Mary Austin on and on.

The huge rivalry in the late 70's - early 80's in city rec womens A league basketball were the teams sponsored by the Orange Grove and Mrs O'Leary's, who were both owned by the same SU affilated owners Jimmy Lee, Mike Lee, the Hornsteins(?), Mike Bright (SU football player?)etc. We alternated championships for about 6 years (I played for Mrs O'Leary's). Lots of fun , some great basketball, crazy times after the games at those bars and very nice people. Fact most guys don't know: It was the men's NCAA when it took over the womens game in 1982 that changed the womens game by requiring use of the smaller "womens" basketball. They did it supposedly to make the womens' game more attractive and more possible for women to dunk.(that is the most coveted basketball skill that guys want to see, I understand) It was a big adjustment for many of us - like shooting a soccer ball after years of using the mens ball (or throwing a baseball after using a softball) but we did it. That said - it was all a looooong time ago.

I'm a little worried Lydon was spotted near miss america. I'd hate to see something happen to him as I hear her man is one bad dude!

Cool guess I had bad info.
Just gotta be careful who you get your info from.

A little quote to live by "dudes that pitch at Johns Hopkins... also catch". If you catch my drift.

On a serious note. Lydon is in serious need to gain about 40 pounds. 40.

I have it on good authority that Miss America was only at the Dome because she wanted to track down that Jarheadjim guy and become REAL "friends" rather than just Facebook friends. She is well aware Jim could destroy her boyfriend and wants the Marine.

I remember playing against the Lee brothers in a Rec League game long ago. I also vaguely remember getting eaten alive.

So many interesting people at the Dome on Saturday but who I saw last takes the cake.

Upon arrival at our wonderful bubbled arena I usually head to the back-court to check out what's new and say hi to friends and former players and such.

After saying hello to Bob Nandin at the Time Warner booth, Bob was voted most popular Syracuse Chiefs Player of the 80's and father of just graduated SU Women's softball shortstop Morgan, I went over to watch folks try their luck at winning a T-shirt. They get four chances to make two free throws, to win the prize and all proceeds go to the Jim & Julie Foundation. There were quite a few folks of all ages exposing their backyard talents to onlookers. Some tall, some short some young and some old. While watching, at least half a dozen won a shirt, better than I expected, after all they're coming in with no warm-ups.

All at once I spotted two board celebrities. One of whom helped found this wonderful place we gather everyday, the other a legend in the north country for making 102 consecutive free throws. I would be talking about none other than the Queen Mother of syracusefan.com CTO(thanks Bill Orange for that appropriate nickname). Paling around with her was CherieHoop the Hal Cohen of this board. I offered to sponsor her in the contest but she respectfully declined.

Earlier I ran into one of our most gifted centers of all-time Roosevelt Bouie. Rosie attends every game and makes himself available to one and all.

Gene Waldron and Eric Devendorf were hanging near the tunnel as Coach Shafer made his first appearance shortly before tip-off.

While trying to spot some of the recruits attending the game I saw a tall dude with the #3 jersey coming towards me. I didn't want to believe it was Tyler Lydon as this guy was pretty skinny. He made his way up the aisle near me. I was so concentrated on his face that I nearly missed the best face on the planet. She was about five feet away from me when the thunderbolt hit, "Hello Miss America" rushed out of my mouth before I could reel it back in. All at once this native of Fayetteville NY was giving me her undivided attention and flashing that Miss American smile my way, OMG!

A buzz went through the crowd that surrounded us.

Earlier I got a chance to congratulate TGD on the bowl victory. Got to chat with Chuck Zimmerman and Roger Praetoreous about the great weekend we were witnessing. All were very excited and proud of the kids.

Besides seeing the #2 team in the nation, the above are what makes attending games in person so very special..

Don't sell Dr. Hal short. It was a few more than 102.

I can't see the picture but I believe it's the Metro Matress guy, a huge fan and sits next to TGD. He's tall and usually wears glasses.
I don't have a picture but that sounds like it is him.

Pretty sure he's a genius.

I've heard he can dunk like Shaky Potatoes can but he's one of those dude's that seems really smart at first before you realize he's just BSing you. Of course I get my info from Glennon so who knows.
