Ok, now my ? Here pertains to anyone who can help me figure this out. We use to play our 2-3 with our forwards back more and back then 2010 ish we would jump on doubles in corners of court and now we try to double the guard up top when we don’t need to and they pass ball around down low 3-2. Now our old defense was top ten in the country and now we get beat regularly down low which we never used too. Why the high ball double when it’s not needed. They swing it around and we get screwed. Please help

Albany found every seam plus it helped their offensive rebounding. That was the biggest flaw from last night.

I don't know if you even have to get that far into it.

The zone that worked for us usually had a front court that may as well have been able to hold hands from sideline to sideline and a backcourt of dudes that could play small forward at >90% of D1 schools. In 2013 John Beilein actually had the practice squad hold ping pong paddles to simulate the length before the final four matchup.

This team isn't small, but they don't have that kind of length. I actually kind of like that we're switching it up now and then to create confusion, but the gaps are big enough that there's no way it should be a base defense. Use it once in a while, like the press.

The bigger question is why do we go into a zone against Albany?

Also, making Eddie (our hunchback center who can't jump) backside slide in the zone is cruel and unusual punishment.

Red has really been all over the place.

This isn’t that deep. JB recruited to the zone (almost too much). We just don’t have the guys who’d be good in a zone regardless of who the coach is. It’s pretty obvious. Maybe Donnie could work but Lampkin, Carlos, Bell, etc…… go look at our size and athletes in the 2010s. None of these guys this woild sniff the floor with those teams

I think Red is trying different things. Cuffe and Carlos were productive and Bell found ways to score and rebound. Even Eddie showed some of the skills we thought he was capable of. The team was on a roll for a while last night but couldn't hold it down on defense. If we can score 90 against Georgetown and/or Maryland, I think it will give some momentum going forward.

Maybe so people stop asking for it? Hard to think of another reason that makes any sense. I do like switching up the D every so often (briefly) just as a change of pace to throw an opponent off guard.

Eddie can't play zone center. Naheem can but he's only worth 5 minutes per game. Donnie, who is every bit as big as Jesse Edwards, also can anchor the zone, and then you can play Davis and Bell on the wings.
Now youre talkin. No reason Freeman cant play like Lydon (w/o the shotblocking Lydon had)

I agree with mixing it up. I think they should go 3 to 4 minutes of Helter skelter each half with full court press with the Highlander at center with a fall back into the two-three zone

Not Helter Skelter, ... The Quickening.

Donnie can't play center in a zone, he'd get muscled away in an instant. They do have the length
to play it ... Westry/Taylor-Moore up front, Bell-McLeod-Freeman in the back, but that D isn't going
to stop anyone. It'd look good standing on tv.

Whomever it put at C is not going to pop away from the hoop like Fab Melo, cuz they physically
just can't. Trade the FT line jumper for a three point attempt though; only gives up two points
per possession.

We used to have Forwards play Forward and Centers play Center. We had tall guys and athletic guys. We had third and fourth year guys who knew the zone like the back of their hand, too.

Sometime in the early 2010’s we stopped having those things and never had them all at the same time. We had Guards playing SF because we needed shooting. We had Forwards playing Center because we couldn’t/wouldn’t recruit good Centers and ‘they gotta get to the corner 3, something something, blah, blah.’ We had 1 year rentals who really couldn’t give a darn if they played good defense in the zone or not.

Our zone worked with the right types of players for the zone. We stopped trying to get those types of players.

That's the thing...Last I checked, the zone worked well for Hop at Washington nearly every year he was there. They just couldn't put the ball in the hoop and that's why Hop got exited.

The thinking is that improved 3-point shooting renders the 2-3 zone antiquated. I'm not sure I buy that entirely, especially since so many teams still use it part-time. I guess we will never know since we haven't had the athletes to run it effectively for the past 10 years or so.

The zone was effective for the right players (talent plus physical attributes) being developed over time. It is difficult to maximize the zone if every year the roster resets, and the 3 point game stretches the zone all the way out and gaps appear.

In addition, look at how the NBA is played today - kind of like all all star 3 point contest.

may be that's why we can't play defense because there is no need to defend where they want to go?
