Class of 2024 ATH Malachi James (NJ) COMMITTED TO SYRACUSE (2/7/24)

My son in law had a best of 11.2 which was good enough to make the NYS Class B state finals. So your#s seem about right.
I'm in Pennsy but it's similar here. Many years ago fastest guy on my HS team ran a 10.7 and got second in states to guy that ran a 10.4. Both ended up on scholarship to Michigan State and Villanova respectively. Standard tackling angles don't on those types.

My oldest made Jr Olympic nationals twice (different event) but watching SoFla, SoCal, Texas, and some gulf state, GA, and Carolina sprinters is another level to most we get up here.

I'm sure your SIL can tell you what a 10.5 is like but this gent from NJ is big time speed we've sorely lacked in the return game IMHO.

10.9-11.0 guys will win a majority of HS meets in the North. Tenths below that are exponentially harder to drop. 10.4-10.5 is usually state champ and, as you'd alluded, "Southern" fast.

Not sure where this gentleman projects but he should be returning kicks if nothing else which I love the idea of return specialists.
Enjoy your imput! Thanks

He runs like Quadry did.. That turned out well.

strange to not see any 2023 stats from him. unless he has an injury ?

he doesn't really show any outdoor 2023 results on any sites. Just indoor stuff.

If Bob Hayes was running on todays Tartan synthetic surface with non movable starting blocks and new shoe tech, his 10.0 would easily translate to 9.6 or 9.7. Jesse Owens 10.3 was run on a soft cinder track with no, I repeat no starting blocks. Dug holes to anchor their toes.

Just for comparison, Zay Flowers ran a 4.42 (Ravens). Another guy with elite speed (that we struggled to cover), Tutu Atwell (LA Rams), ran a 4.39 ... at 5-9 155 lbs. MJ is faster than both and almost 200 lbs. Wherever he shows up on the field, RB, slot, WR, KR, etc., he's going to be a matchup problem.

Yeah his speed is really impressive. In some of his clips, granted the comp is questionable, he's jogging at the 15 heading into the endzone.

And at 5-11 195 he is solid and can hit people who get in front of him.

Have never heard of the school before. Seems like it’s half way between Philly and Trenton. Competition looks weak, but these are the kids you find out about from people connected to the area that know there may be a diamond in the rough. Some of these highlights gave flashbacks to Mike Hart or Tay Murray at OCS. Certainly worth a flier. I wouldn’t mind seeing him at RB or CB if he is able. Certainly a return guy.
