Malachi made some big shots but he had the game in his hands at end of regulation. If he makes 2nd FT we 're up 4 and win. He misses. (Big surprise another missed FT). everyone in the Dome knows Clemson down 3 is going to shoot a 3 to tie. The ball goes inside...the zone collapses...throw it out for a wide open wing 3...bingo. How many times have we seen that in the last few years? A lot. Why fall back inside (especially you Malachi)? We don't care if they get a 2 there. Sorry but that is all on the coaching. It's reaction to want to collapse inside. But a smart, well drilled team, informed by its coach wouldn't. They would guard the arc. So damn frustrating. The interior D is awful but we without a true center we know that is a season long weakness. Free throw shooting and smart perimeter D in late game situations is not too much to expect. UGH!!!

Wonder if JB would have coached them to foul to keep them from shooting a 3.
Isn't he a proponent of that strategy?
Or is that only if a 3 could win the game?

Malachi could have iced the game with the free throw, but for the game he shot well from the line. You would just hope that miss doesn't happen late.

I know what you are feeling, but a shot counts the same as any other regardless of the time.

Would a M2M defense have that collapse in that situation. Thats a question we will never know because of this staff being wedded to a zone 100% of the time now.

Who could blame Mali if he decides to leave this train wreck?

Yes and no. With that amount of time remaining, the outcome of that foul shot changes what LSU has to do on the next possession.

Huh? Didn't he just fail to put the game away? That's a springboard to the NBA?

r u serious? Don't forget that he is a frosh who is playing out of position. He could post up or take off the dribble any shooting guard in ncaa ball. 10/13 for 3's, over 20 pts per game, and 8 rebs per game over the last two games, not that he can keep this up, but his ceiling is the highest to wear orange since Melo. He is skilled and aggressive without being foul prone.

Nothing what-so-ever would have changed if he had missed a foul shot earlier in the game instead of making it, and then at the end made the shot he missed. The score at the end of his foul shooting would be exactly, precisely, identically, the same in either event. Perhaps in the world of quantum mechanics things could be different, but that is too spooky to contemplate. We see things from our perspective but in reality, time and location are plastic, bending and twisting due to mass and waves, or so they say. I have my fingers crossed that there is an alternative universe where we win 7 ACC games.

Dont kill the kid for missing the free throw, he's the only reason we were even in the game.

After the first FT, Clemson called TO. PERFECT time for coach to go to his guys and say

"OK. we're up 3, if we hit the FT, were up four..just play tough D and make them use some clock to score...
if we miss, then a three ties the game...you MUST guard the perimeter...(or foul if he wanted that) and allow them to score a two if you have to"

Im assuming he did this. You have to assume that. So then I ask you, why did Cooney with around 7 seconds left, drop into the deep lane to double team the freaking center who had no intention of shooting the ball? how many years does he have to be around to stop doing that crap? As I recall, a similar failure happened at the end of the nova game last year when we were up three with seconds left and then lost in OT.

Fwiw...it was Lydon, not Cooney.

Then they both collapsed. Because the shot was from Lydon's wing and he was slow closing because he collapsed down...

Richardson rotated up too fast and ended up doubling the high wing and it left Lyndon to rotate out to the wing. It wasn't even in the corner. He did contest it, but the foul should have happened when the stiff caught the ball at the high post.

it was tc who doubled

Yep, Lydon was covering the guy in the lane, but Cooney doubled down. And then only Lydon left the paint when the ball got kicked out. Cooney inexplicably stayed down low with the center.

These are the exact type of situations I wish we moved away from the zone concept and played man. Then at least every player knows who they are accountable for.

Richardson is out of position a lot on D. He carried us last night but he gives back as many as he gets with his defensive lapses. We have to live with it and hope he improves on that end but he is the only kid with sack and the only kid who can get to the rim and finish.

The only surprising thing on that play is we didn't let them roll the ball to half court to save time.

The defense should have pressured early then fallen back to prevent the 3.
Guard the arc and foul late before they can get a shot off.
That it didn't happen has to be a coaching decision (or non-decision).

This! I don't understand why Lydon was even inside the arc on that last possession. People are concerned about fouling but I'd rather give up the layup, inbound the ball and get fouled. If they drill an 80 foot shot to win so be it.

No doubt Mal is highly skilled and has a future beyond Syracuse. But this is a team sport and he is a part of this "train wreck," just like Lydon, DC2, Mike, Trevor, Robie, and all the rest.

If you listen to Mike's presser, the team was told to stop the 3 and foul after 8 seconds.
