Welcome to National Crab Rangoon Day!

So it’s the day before Valentine’s Day and every single girl is cursing the day—but why?! It’s National Crab Rangoon Day! So, it’s time to get together with your girlfriends to celebrate this peculiar holiday that is strategically placed on the eve of “Single Awareness Day.”

For those of you who have deprived yourselves of this Chinese-American treat, here’s what you need to know: Crab Rangoon are deep-fried, cream cheese and crab-stuffed dumplings. Understandable if that doesn’t sound all that appealing to you, but try one! And you won’t be stopping there—trust me.

Rang Day actually originated in Boston by Kara Sweeney, Sarah White, and Kristin Ostrem who decided there should be a day to cherish the deep-friend dumplings. The three Boston friends decided that people who were not in a relationship should still have something to look forward to around Valentine’s Day. As such, they deemed February 13th as the day to celebrate “the rang” and enjoy time with friends to make Valentine’s Day fun even if you are single.

Syracuse basketball at North Carolina State: 10 things to watch for (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange is entering the toughest portion of its schedule, and it all begins on Wednesday with a game at North Carolina State.

Syracuse is currently 17-7 overall and 8-3 ACC. Of the Orange's last seven conference games, four will be against ranked opponents, and the three games against unranked opponents are all on the road.

North Carolina State brings a 17-7 record into Wednesday's game. The Wolfpack is 5-6 in the ACC after a 79-76 win at Pittsburgh on Saturday. That snapped a three-game losing streak for the Pack.

Syracuse is 4-1 on the road in the ACC this season, while N.C. State is 2-3 at home. However, those three home losses have come against North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Tipoff for Wednesday's game at the PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C., is scheduled for 8 p.m.

Here are 10 things to watch for:

NCAA implications for Syracuse

For the moment, Syracuse is well inside in the NCAA bubble and in the tournament field. The Orange is at No. 48 in the NCAA's NET rankings and 42nd in KenPom.com's ratings.

The final stretch of the regular season will offer Syracuse will multiple opportunities to bolster its NCAA resume.

Of the Orange's last seven games, six would currently fall into the NCAA's Quadrant 1. North Carolina State, which is at No. 35 in the NET rankings, is the first of those six Quadrant 1 foes.

Syracuse ‘loves’ road games and it shows (DO; Heyen)

Earlier this season, Frank Howard called playing on the road “our dream.” He relishes the travel because it’s an opportunity to fly cross country and just focus on basketball. More than midway through the season, Syracuse’s record has reflected its “love” of playing away from central New York.

“Get to step away from classes a little bit, just straight focus on basketball,” Howard said. “We get excited for that stuff, and we just want to protect our name on the road.”

Syracuse (17-7, 8-3 Atlantic Coast) will put its 5-1 true road record on the line Wednesday night at North Carolina State (17-7, 5-6). The Orange is one of 11 teams with one or fewer road losses this season, per TeamRankings.com. Two of SU’s biggest wins this season — then-No. 1 Duke and then-No.16 Ohio State — came away from the Carrier Dome. For SU to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament, Syracuse will need to continue its hot play on the road in Raleigh, N.C. and in its four remaining road games.

“When you go on the road in this league and you can get a win, you go home happy. Period,” SU head coach Jim Boeheim said.

Syracuse is one of several home-versus-road eye-poppers in 2019 (cbbtoday.com; Zemek)

There is still a full month left before Selection Sunday on March 17, so plenty is subject to change in college basketball. Nevertheless, the Syracuse Orange and plenty of other teams could tell you that life is full of surprises. More plot twists await, but a look at home-road splits (plus neutral-court outcomes in some cases) reveals lots of eye-popping realities in this sport as February hits the midway point, and the journey toward Bracketville intensifies.

What is the familiar story involving Syracuse? The Orange have often not left the state of New York in the first month of their season. They might play a game in Madison Square Garden and load up on Carrier Dome dates. They would be comfortable in their own back yard but would struggle when they left familiar surroundings.

This season, Syracuse is in comfortable NCAA Tournament position precisely because of its ability to win away from home, which has saved the Orange from some nasty home-court losses.

Syracuse lost to Georgia Tech and Old Dominion, plus Buffalo and Florida State. In other years, this collection of home losses might have put the Orange squarely on the bubble; Jim Boeheim has lived there multiple times in recent seasons. Yet, this season that won’t cost SU. The Orange won at Duke, a massive upset which has substantially reshaped this team’s profile. Syracuse has been a very responsible road team, going 5-1 in opponents’ home buildings. That’s why this is an NCAA team.

Syracuse is hardly the only home-road eye-popper in 2019. Plenty of other examples exist, for reasons good, bad, or just plain confusing.

Syracuse Orange v. NC State Wolfpack Predictions (2/13/19) - The Juice Online (the juice; Staff)

Syracuse plays a critical game on the road against North Carolina State on Wednesday evening. Ahead of the game, The Juice Online’s Saugat Sen and Brad Bierman give their predictions below:

BRAD BIERMAN (Season Record: 3-1): Has there ever been a tougher stretch of the last seven games of the ACC regular season since Syracuse joined in 2013-14?

Actually, last year was just about the same on paper, as the Orange finished with five of the same seven opponents they’ll meet between Wednesday night’s matchup at N.C. State (8:00 p.m. ET / ACC Network) and the finale at Clemson March 9, with all but Top 25 teams Virginia and Louisville new this year.

As with last season, it seemingly took a first-ever ACC Tournament win (Wake Forest) to propel the ’Cuse to being selected as the last team to Dance, so again there is minimal movement for error beginning with this Wolfpack road test while looking to improve on a 4-1 league record away from the Dome.

Syracuse has now developed its own version of “Killer B’s” with Tyus Battle. Buddy Boeheim and Oshae Brissett combining for 49 of Syracuse’s 67 points in the B.C. win last weekend, and as usual that will be a key component for the Orange. With Brissett, Battle and Elijah Hughes often driving to at least get foul shot opportunities, the need to get Boeheim and others open looks is tantamount with such little inside prescience.

Sports SUmmary: Lakers consider Carmelo, Mangakahia makes hoops lists | The NewsHouse (thenewshouse.com; Bradford)

Former Syracuse star Carmelo Anthony draws interest from Los Angeles Lakers

After last week’s NBA trade deadline, the Lakers opened up a roster spot with their trade of Ivica Zubac and Michael Beasley for Mike Muscala. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, “the Lakers plan to evaluate the full buyout market once it takes shape, but Carmelo Anthony is expected to be among the considerations too, league sources tell ESPN.”

Former SU star Malachi Richardson traded, then waived

The day before the NBA’s trade deadline, Malachi Richardson — the 22nd pick in 2016 — and the draft rights to Emir Preldzic were traded to the Philadelphia 76ers for cash considerations. However, according to Derek Bodner of The Athletic, the 76ers have waived Malachi Richardson to make room for James Ennis, who the team just acquired in their latest deal.

This transaction leaves only four former Syracuse athletes in the NBA currently: Jerami Grant, Dion Waiters, Wesley Johnson and Tyler Lydon.

Richardson joins two former Syracuse players who have been waived this season as well: Carmelo Anthony and Michael Carter-Williams.

The 6-foot-6 Richardson has only played 70 games between his time with the Sacramento Kings and Toronto Raptors in his three seasons in the NBA after leaving college, where he last made a Final Four appearance his freshman year in 2015-16.

Ri-Duke-ulous: Blue Devils’ wild comeback at Louisville keeps Duke atop ACC standings (wtkr.com; Winkler)

With less than 10 minutes to play Tuesday at the KFC Yum! Center, Louisville led Duke 59-36.

Without even forcing the game to overtime, the 2nd ranked Blue Devils escaped with their 22nd win of the season – one unlike any other in the last 40 years.

Duke engineered its largest second-half comeback of the Mike Krzyzewski era (1980-present) to win 71-69. The victory moves the Blue Devils one full-game ahead of Virginia and North Carolina for first place in the ACC men’s basketball standings.

Freshman phenom Zion Williamson led all scorers with 27 points. He also pulled down 12 rebounds. Fellow freshman Cam Reddish contributed 22 points – including the game’s final five points. Louisville’s Christen Cunningham tried to tie the game in the final seconds, but his jumper bounced off the rim.

The UM basketball team plays Clemson on Wednesday. Here’s what you need to know. (miamiherald.com; Kaufman)

After coming oh-so-close to pulling off an overtime road upset of No. 8 North Carolina during the weekend, the University of Miami men’s basketball team is back home Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game against Clemson.

The Hurricanes (10-13, 2-9 ACC) are hoping to build off their improved play in a win over Notre Dame last week and the 88-85 loss at Carolina, during which they outrebounded the Tar Heels 39-32 and Chris Lykes scored 27 points, including 19 in the second half.

Clemson coach Brad Brownell, whose team is on a four-game win streak, expects a tough game.

“They’re coming off a terrific performance at Chapel Hill and we know we have our hands full.”

Brownell is especially impressed with the Hurricanes guards.

“Chris Lykes is about as hard to guard as anybody in our league, just a dynamite player who can shoot the three, great assist numbers,” he said. “Zach Johnson has been a good fifth-year addition. He’s a big strong guard, makes shots, gets in the lane, handles the ball like a point guard. I recruited Anthony Lawrence, I’ve always liked him. Recruited Izundu, too. They’re a little shorthanded, but the six or seven they have are good players. Jim’s (UM coach Jim Larranaga) got them playing very well right now.”

Links, news and rumors - 2/13/19

This is certainly a basketball-heavy edition of links, news and rumors...

Thanks to AllThingsFSU for pointing out this nugget...

Nice start for the AAF on CBS last night.

Overnights:

Duke-UVA:2.3
AAF: 2.1
NBA: 2.0

On the one hand, it's pretty impressive that an ACC basketball game out-drew both the NBA and the premier of a new professional football league.

On the other hand, why isn't the ACC being paid like it?
