Welcome to Valentine's Day!

The history of Valentine’s Day–and the story of its patron saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Syracuse basketball loses to NC State 73-58: Brent Axe recap (PS; Axe)

State Schooled

The Syracuse University basketball team has six days to lick their wounds and find some offense following a 73-58 loss to North Carolina State on Wednesday night at PNC Arena.

The Orange won't be back on the court until Feb.20 against Louisville at the Carrier Dome, getting a rare weekend off in ACC play.

Call it the calm before the storm.

Syracuse now has to win two of its next six games to get to the magic double-digit wins mark in the ACC that will harden the Orange's NCAA Tournament resume.

It just so happens that four of SU's next six opponents are top 16 teams (Duke, Virginia, North Carolina, Louisville).

The television overlords got their wish and backloaded Syracuse's ACC slate with the best of the best in the ACC.

The question is if Syracuse is capable of playing their best in that stretch as Wednesday's bumbling offensive display did not offer much hope for that.

ACC Roundup - NC State Tops Syracuse, Clemson Loses A Heartbreaker (DBR; King)

Four games In ACC action Wednesday night and some interesting things in each.

We figured State might beat Syracuse but we thought it would be closer than it was and we didn't think Syracuse, with some real size advantages even if you don’t count Pascal Chukwu, who normally isn’t very productive, would stink it up from the floor.

But they did.

Other than Frank Howard, who shot 8-16, the starters only managed to hit 7-29 (21.1%).

After some up and down play recently, State seems to have rounded into form. They still have limitations but are doing well overall. This is not a team we’d care to see in the NCAA tournament because they won’t go in as a high seed and will come after whoever they get. State’s number one asset is intensity and effort and that usually trumps talent that isn’t playing hard.

We only saw his UNCW teams play in the NCAA Tournament, but anyone who watched them could tell he was an outstanding coach. His teams are tough as hell (incidentally, both Keatts and Virginia’s Tony Bennett have been been mentioned in the UCLA search).

What’s up with Sacha Killeya-Jones? The Kentucky transfer wasn’t with the team and Keatts says he’s “not currently a member of our program.” That’s interesting.

Hurricanes beat Clemson 65-64 on buzzer-beater by Johnson (miamiherald.com; Kaufman)

The first half of Wednesday night’s game was as lousy as the weather outside the Watsco Center, as the University of Miami and Clemson teams struggled mightily to get going. But the Hurricanes made up for it with a thrilling ending, pulling out a 65-64 victory on a gutsy fadeaway bank shot by Zach Johnson just before the final buzzer.

“When it hit the backboard, I was like `Oh, no,’ said UM coach Jim Larranaga. “But it spun around the rim a couple of times, and I thought, `That’s got a chance’ and it went in.”

Miami had squandered a 10-point second-half lead, trailed by one with under a minute to go, and the Tigers appeared to have the game in hand when UM point guard Chris Lykes missed a jumper and Clemson’s Marcquise Reed grabbed the rebound with 50 seconds remaining.

One coop at a time: ‘Rent the Chicken’ promises fresh eggs without the commitment of full-time farming (PS; Castelo)

Lisa Stevenson never thought renting out hens would be part of her and her husband Steve’s retirement plan.

She saw a TV program on somebody renting out their chickens a few years ago and thought it was a cool business idea. But with a full-time job then, it wasn’t something she could pursue.

The idea popped into her head again last April. By then, she was retired, so she went online, Googled “rent chickens” and found “Rent The Chicken,” a company that gives people the chance to experience owning backyard hens or hatching chicks without the commitment of keeping them.

Now, Lisa and Steve are affiliate partners with Rent The Chicken, making their own hens available for six-month rentals starting in May to those who want farm-fresh eggs in Syracuse and the rest of Central New York.

“A lot more people are concerned about where their food is coming from, so they will actually have a way to get fresh chicken eggs, know what they’re eating and how they’re cared for,” Lisa explained.

She said that renting is a great option for people in the area because of its severe winters. “Chickens are difficult to take care of in the winter,” she said. “But I take care of that for them. All they have to do is have the chickens from spring through fall.”
