Welcome to National Cut the Cord Day!

Streaming television service Sling TV created National Cut the Cord Day as a time when people "cut the cord" and move from cable to streaming. The day aims to dispel any excuses people still have to stay with cable and to show them it's easy to switch to streaming. It was first observed in 2020, on Sling TV's fifth anniversary, which they called their "Slingerversary." At the time, Sling TV claimed to have helped their subscribers save $1.2 billion since starting up business. Sling TV's pitch is that they allow customers to subscribe only to channels they want, and allow them to access local channels for free as part of their plan.

On the first observance of National Cut the Cord Day, Sling TV offered five days of deals for new, returning, and current subscribers. For example, new and returning subscribers were able to get their first month of service for $5. During the second observance, Sling TV organized a special offer called Sling Fling, which they dubbed "a daily, no credit card required, six-night primetime TV event." From 5 pm to midnight for six days, over 100 channels could be accessed for free. Sling TV offered other special offers as well, such as a month of Sling Orange or Sling Blue for $10.

Syracuse gets zoned in against Boston College (bostonherald.com; Thompson)

Syracuse arrived at Conte Forum on Tuesday night with a large contingent of color-coordinated supporters draped in orange and an uncompromising 2-3 zone defense.

The Orangemen built and early lead and fought hard to maintain throughout their 73-64 victory over Boston College. BC fell 9-13 overall and 4-8 in the ACC while Syracuse improved 13-11 and 7-6.

“We were trying to play inside out. We wanted to try and get the ball in the paint first and we had some opportunities we could capitalize on,” said BC coach Earl Grant. “When teams play zone 100 percent of the game it is hard to find your rhythm and we showed a lot more poise in the second half. I would have like to have found that rhythm and confidence in the first half. “

Syracuse shot 39.3% from the floor but made 11 treys, the signature stat that made the difference in the game. Forward Cole Swider made five 3-pointers and led all scorers with 21, while point guard Joe Girard netted 19 with four assists.

The Eagles shot 37.5% from the floor overall and a hideous 6-of-28 from behind the arc. BC finished with a 42-40 edge on the boards, a 15-9 advantage on assists and got sound efforts from a pair of first-year players, backup center Quintin Post and guard Jaeden Zackery. Post enjoyed a double double with 14 points and 14 boards while Zackery netted 18 with six assists and six rebounds.

“Quintin got the ball inside and I thought he played really well for us,” said Grant. “It was nice to see him rebound the ball the way he did and he made some bit shot is the game.

“Jaeden look promising and he’s another first year guy in the program that had a big night. He was a couple of rebounds away from a double double and a couple assists away from a triple double. For a freshman, that’s pretty good.”

BC trailed by 10 at the break and remained chasing the game, handcuffed by a slim double-digit deficit the Eagles struggled to eradicate.

DeMarr Langford cut the lead to 41-33 on a floater from the baseline, but Syracuse countered with a Frank Anselem 3-point play and a Swider jumper. Syracuse led 50-38 into the second media timeout.

Cuse answered every BC scoring spurt with greater firepower. Anselem put back his own shot in a maelstrom under the rim for a 58-44 lead at the third media timeout.

BC got to within 10 points, 60-50, when DeMarr Lanford completed a 3-point play with 4:53 remaining. Post dunked on the baseline to make it 60-52 into the final media timeout.

Zackery converted a three-point play to make it 62-55, but Girard drained a corner trey and hit two free throws to put Syracuse up 12 with 1:42 on the board. Girard closed the game with four from the line.

“I thought in the second half we were making some tough shots,” said Grant. “But it took us to long to find our rhythm.”

Game Recap: BC Men’s Basketball vs Syracuse Orange (bcinterruption.com; Bagz)

Coming off a late game blitzing at the hands of the Cavaliers of Virginia, BC returned home for a 2 game home stint in Conte Forum. The stretch started against the Syracuse Orange who sat at the middle of the ACC with a conference record of 6-6.

BC won the opening tip but only managed a shot clock violation on their first offensive possession. It was a sign of things to come. Despite stopping the Orange on multiple possessions BC struggled to score, as Syracuse’s defense made it very difficult for the Eagles to get the ball inside. Eagles did not score until 16:20 when TJ Bickerstaff hit 1 of his 2 free throws. Aside from the lone foul shot the Eagles were ice cold from the floor; short, mid, or long range the Eagles couldn’t get the ball to fall. That being said BC’s defense did its job and at the first media timeout with 14:55 to go in the half the Eagles were only down 1 to 4. It took till 14:05 for the Eagles to get their first field in the form of a Quinten Post layup. With 11:42 left to go in the half the Eagles were still only trailing by 4 (7 to 11) but the Eagles were only shooting 18% from the floor. Syracuse was simply giving the Eagles no room inside the paint forcing BC to rely on perimeter shooting, which has not been the team’s strong suit. Even when the Eagles got open threes they just couldn’t convert. Two Syracuse threes with 8:13 left to go in the half extend Cuse’s lead to 10. Two quick buckets from Quinten Post and Jaeden Zackery cut the lead back down to single digits. Yet Syracuse went on a 11-5 run with 5:41 left in the half to extend their lead to 12 (20 to 32). The Eagles defense continued to give it all they had even hold Syracuse scoreless for 2:38 at the end of the first half. Yet, the Eagles’ offense failed to capitalize and entered half-time down by 10, 24 to 34. Quinten Post lead the team in scoring with 10 points and seemed to be the only player able to score with any kind of regularity. Even then he, like the rest of the Eagles, was having to fight through two or 3 orange jerseys for almost every basket. The Eagles desperately needed someone to catch fire to have any hope of coming back.

The second half opened with back and forth action but without the Eagles closing any ground, despite a three from Makai Ashton Langford and a 3rd Alley-op from DeMarr Langford Jr. With 15:36 to go in the half the Eagles faced a 13 point deficit, 33 to 46, and while their shooting improved and they even started to score in the paint, they had a harder time containing Syracuse. Buddy Boeheim and Cole Swider led the charge for Orange, and the team always seemed to have a three waiting for whenever the Eagles tried to get some momentum going. With 11:46 left to go in the half the Eagles found themselves trailing 38 to 50 after making only 1 of their last 7 shots, this after holding Syracuse scoreless for 2:07. With 9:29 left in the half, Syracuse had a 15 point lead. For the Eagles baskets simply were not coming consistently enough and the defense was starting to crack. The Eagles kept fighting though, cutting the lead to 10 with 4:54 left in the game. With 3:58 left in the game a Quinten Post dunk cut the lead to 8. They cut Syracuse lead to 7 before Joseph Girard III hit a three to re-extend the lead to 10 with 2:07 to go and that was the back-breaker for the Eagles. The Eagles clawed their way back to within 7 points but there simply wasn’t enough time left to mount the comeback. The Final Score saw BC fall 64 to 73.

Five Takeaways: Syracuse 73 Boston College 64 (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse won its fourth straight game by knocking off Boston College 73-64 on the road Tuesday night. Here are five takeaways from the victory.

1. Finding a Way to Win

This was not the same level of offensive efficiency as we've seen during the first three games of this four game winning streak. Jesse Edwards was scoreless and fouled out in just 14 minutes. Joe Girard really struggled in the first half. Buddy Boeheim was just 2-9 from three. Syracuse was outrebounded. Boston College had a 40-16 points in the paint advantage. Despite all of that, Syracuse found a way to win. Yes, Boston College is not very good. But did we not see this same Syracuse team lose to Georgetown and Pittsburgh on the road when not playing well? That is a sign, in my opinion, that this team has turned a corner or in the process of turning the corner. This exact type of game, where Syracuse did not play close to its best, was the type that it lost earlier in the season. See at Georgetown and at Pittsburgh as two examples. Now playing this way will not win at Virginia Tech, who is the best three point shooting team in the ACC and has been playing very well lately. But this is still a good win.

2. Frank Anselem

We’re Going Streaking: SU defeats BC, 73-64 (Axe recap) (PS; $; Axe)

I don’t know if Jim Boeheim recently gave his Syracuse University men’s basketball team the Jake Taylor “there’s only one thing left to do” speech, but what I do know is the Orange keeps winning.

Syracuse picked up its fourth-straight victory on Tuesday night with a 73-64 win over Boston College at the Conte Forum.

Syracuse did not keep up its blistering 57% field-goal rate from the prior three games but shot well from the 3-point and free-throw lines to set the pace in a game BC dominated the paint and never let Syracuse run away.

Syracuse had four of its five starters score in double figures and led wire-to-wire for the second-straight game.

SU improved to 13-11 (7-6 ACC) with the win.

The Orange is playing well but is not back on the NCAA tournament bubble ... yet.

If SU can grab a Quad 1 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday, someone cue up the Jim Carey “you’re telling me there’s a chance” meme.

“It’s been a great stretch,” Boeheim said. “These guys have stepped back up. Battled hard. Got themselves back in decent position. We’ll see what happens from here.”

Manek's Go-Ahead Basket Lifts North Carolina over Clemson, 79-77 (theacc.com; AP)

Armando Bacot had 24 points and 10 rebounds for his 18th double double of the season and Brady Manek made a go-ahead basket with 3.1 seconds left to help North Carolina beat Clemson 79-77 on Tuesday night.

Caleb Love sank a 3-pointer with 36.3 seconds left to give North Carolina a 77-75 lead before PJ Hall tied it at the other end with a basket in the lane. After a timeout, Love drove the lane and found an open Manek trailing the play for an easy finish. Clemson had a good look at a 3-pointer from the wing at the buzzer but David Collins' attempt was short.

Bacot was 8 of 10 from the field - and also the free-throw line - for North Carolina (17-7, 9-4 ACC). RJ Davis added 16 points, Manek and Leaky Black each had 11 and Love 10. Black scored all of his points in the second half.
Bacot scored 15 of North Carolina's 30 first-half points, including a dunk just before the halftime buzzer for a five-point lead. He picked up his fourth foul with 11:41 remaining and went to the bench before returning five minutes later. He fouled out with just over a minute left on the offensive end.

Hall scored 24 points for Clemson (12-11, 4-8). Freshman Ian Schieffelin, averaging 2.1 points per game, scored a season-high 12 points, and Al-Amir Dawes and Collins each had 10.

North Carolina hosts Florida State on Saturday. Clemson continues its three-game homestand on Thursday against No. 7 Duke, followed by Notre Dame on Saturday.

Hochul to drop business mask rule today, wait on schools (reports) (PS; Tampone)

Gov. Kathy Hochul will announce today she’ll end New York’s mask mandate for businesses, according to The New York Times.

But she plans to keep the rule requiring masks in schools for now, according to multiple reports.

Since December, people have been required to wear masks when indoors at New York businesses and other public venues. Businesses could forgo the mask mandate if they required proof of vaccination from all customers and employees.

Hochul implemented the rule just as Covid-19 cases began to spike rapidly in New York due to the more omicron variant of the coronavirus. Cases soon soared to record highs and hospitalizations reached levels not seen since the winter of 2021.

Cases and hospitalizations peaked in early January and have been dropping quickly since then.

Hochul has said the trends have reached a point where it’s appropriate to consider easing some of the state’s Covid rules.

The state’s business mask mandate was set to expire Thursday and would have required renewing, according to the Times.
