Roberson Continues Growth as Starting Forward Heading Into the V Tech Matchup (DO; Dougherty)
Before beating Wake Forest on Jan. 13, Syracuse’s forwards lined up behind the 3-point line and, like they do before most games, staged a pseudo dunk contest.
B.J. Johnson swooped in from the top of the key and threw down a left-handed windmill. Rakeem Christmas finished an around-the-back-360 slam that drew “Oohs” and “Ahhs” from the baseline crowd. Walk-on Doyin Akintobi-Adeyeye tossed the ball off the backboard and dunked it two-handed, drawing laughs from the guards who stretched near midcourt.
Then Tyler Roberson dribbled twice and lightly laid in a layup off the backboard. No dunk. All fundamentals.
“That’s just me,” Roberson said, laughing, after the WFU game. “I’m laid back, quieter. I guess I like to save it for the game.”

Hokie Johnson Shares VT Experience with Sisters (DO; Rose)
Will Johnston thought he was the worst athlete in the family.
His older sister, Paige, boasted 11 state titles in track and cross-country. His younger sister, Marie, was all-state for Virginia in cross-country as a freshman. His youngest sister, Kari, earned all-state honors as a high school senior.
After high school, the three sisters had offers to play their respective sports at Division I schools while Will had to walk on to his top choice, Virginia Tech.
“It kind of pushed me to go harder,” he said. “There was definitely competition.”

5 Things to Watch as Syracuse Basketball Faces Virginia Tech for the Second Time (PS; Waters)
Syracuse and Virginia Tech will meet for the second time this season as the Hokies come to the Carrier Dome on Tuesday night.
Virginia Tech is the first ACC opponent that Syracuse will be facing for the second time. Syracuse will eventually play Boston College, Pittsburgh and Duke twice, but the Orange will wrap up its home-and-home with the Hokies before facing Pittsburgh or Duke for the first time.
In their first meeting, Syracuse narrowly escaped with a 68-66 win over the Hokies in Blacksburg, Va., on Jan. 3. Virginia Tech's Malik Muller missed a last-second 3-pointer that would have won the game for the Hokies. Syracuse led 42-23 at halftime of that game, but the Hokies took advantage of Syracuse's 11-for-21 free throw shooting in the second half and hit six 3-pointers to put a scare into the Orange.

Virginia Tech's Charter Flight Arrives in Syracuse After Delays (PS; Waters)
The Virginia Tech basketball team had to wait out a couple delays, but the Hokies' chartered flight from Roanoke to Syracuse arrived at Hancock International Airport at approximately 4:30 p.m. Monday.
The Virginia Tech team flight had originally been expected to depart Roanoke around 12:30 p.m. with an arrival close to 2 p.m.
The flight was delayed due to the storm that dumped between 8 to 14 inches of snow over Central New York.
Virginia Tech and Syracuse will face each other at the Carrier Dome at 9 p.m. on Tuesday.
After arriving in Syracuse, the Hokies got in a late practice at the Carrier Dome.

Is the Orange Up to the Task of These Last 10 Games? (PS; Poliquin)
If the big man was right when he declared that you are what you are, we can agree that the Syracuse University Orange is no better and no worse than the 14-7 club it is.
Bill Parcells would never tell us that SU is closer to being a 17-4ish kind of outfit (because, after all, those narrow losses to Michigan, Villanova and Miami could have been won). Nor would he submit that it's lucky not to be a 9-12ish bunch (on the theory that the Orange could've/should've been dumped by Iowa, Louisiana Tech, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest).
Nope, Parcells would advise that this Syracuse team has the exact properties of 14-7, a record that may be unremarkable by this town's imperial basketball standards but should probably be applauded, considering defections and injuries, by those with clues in their pockets.
What matters now, though — that is, beyond fretting how badly SU is going to get whacked (or not) by the NCAA — isn't anything that has happened; rather, it is what's going to develop over these next 33 days. Ten contests remain for the Orange in this regular season over that arc, and only two will be played against squads that woke up this morning with losing records.
