Welcome to Carl Sagan Day!

Please join us this November as we honor Carl Sagan and celebrate the beauty and wonder of the cosmos he so eloquently described.

Carl Sagan was a Professor of Astronomy and Space Science and Director of the Laboratory for Planetary Studies at Cornell University, but most of us know him as a Pulitzer Prize winning author and the creator of COSMOS. That Emmy and Peabody award-winning PBS television series transformed educational television when it first aired in 1980, but now, thirty years later, it's gone on to affect the hearts and minds of over a billion people in sixty countries.

No other scientist has been able to reach and teach so many nonscientists in such a meaningful way, and that is why we celebrate Dr. Sagan, remember his work, and revel in the cosmos he helped us understand.

SU 96, Florida Southern 54: Kaleb Joseph, Malachi Richardson Impress in Orange Rout (TNIAAM; Burke)

Syracuse's 96-54 exhibition victory over Florida Southern on Sunday would seem to confirm what we already knew: if SU is going to struggle this season, it won't be for the same reasons the Orange finished just 18-13 overall in 2014-15.

While last season's team was plagued by the absence of offensively capable perimeter players, Sunday showed that quite the opposite should be true for the 2015-16 version of the Orange. Together, Kaleb Joseph and Malachi Richardson put on an offensive display, combining for 31 points on just 13 shots. Richardson had an especially good afternoon, coupling a team-high 18 points with a facilitative performance and an impressive showing on defense.

In all, Syracuse went 31-of-63 from the floor and hit 14 of 29 tries from 3, led by Joseph and Richardson's combined 7-of-10 shooting from deep.

"In these two exhibition games, you want to learn something. And I think we have," SU head coach Jim Boeheim said, referencing today's game in addition to last Monday's against Le Moyne. " ... We moved the ball well and got a lot of good shots."

Joseph and Richardson were responsible for much of that, as were Trevor Cooney and Michael Gbinije. The fifth-year guards combined for 29 points on 8-of-17 shooting. But Syracuse already knows what to expect from Cooney and Gbinije, who were second and third in scoring on the Orange last season.

2015-16 SU Basketball Preview: Overview, Roster Analysis (thejuice; Stechschulte)

Syracuse enters the 2015-2016 basketball season facing a long list of circumstances they have not experienced before. Due to NCAA decision, the team has lost a handful of scholarships, creating to a shorter roster. Head coach Jim Boeheim will spend the first nine games of ACC play away from the team due to suspension, meaning Mike Hopkins will get a trial run for a month. Oh, and Boeheim established a timeline for his retirement, giving himself three more seasons at the helm before handing the reins to Hopkins permanently.

On the floor, the team comes into the season in the very unusual spot of having not made the postseason at the end of the previous campaign. While the team removed itself from all postseason play as a punishment in an effort to gain leniency from the NCAA, the team was much more likely to be headed to the NIT instead of the NCAA Tournament. Sporting an 18-13 overall record and a 9-9 conference mark, the team would have been the #8 seed in the ACC tournament and maybe would have won a game before getting bounced.

That level of accomplishment came with center Rakeem Christmas powering the team by performing beyond almost all measure last season. Christmas, who had 504 points in his first three seasons at SU, rolled up 542 points as a senior en route to posting averages of 17.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game. His rewards? He was named both ACC First Team and Third Team All-American, then was had his name called as an NBA second-round draft pick.

Orange Girl Wins Miss Syracuse Pageant (PS; Poorman)

In the ballroom of Baldwinsville's historic Mohegan Manor this Sunday, 11 young women competed for the titles Miss Syracuse, Miss Salt City and Miss Erie Canal in the 2016 Miss Syracuse Triple Crown Competition.

Joint-hosted by Miss Apple Festival 2016 Abby Hoag, Co-Founder and Director of Salt City Royalty Confidence Club and Salt City Legacy Scholars, Inc. Kristy Lee Witt and SU alumna -turned Miss Rhode Island 2016 Alexandra Curtis, the celebration of "Style, Scholarship, Service and Success" featured performances, live questions and showcases of swimwear and evening gowns from each contestant.

Linda Dracker-Hochenberger, executive director of the Triple Crown Competition, said that this year's crop of girls, above all, showed incredible drive in their pursuit of the three titles and their corresponding scholarships of $500.

"They are doing this for all the right reasons," Dracker-Hochenberger said, emphasizing education. "It's not just, 'Oh, yeah, I'm in school.' They are all very dedicated to their platforms."

Some of the contestants' platforms included suicide and mental health awareness, female empowerment and supporting cancer research.

Ultimately, the three crowns went to Meghan Sinisi (Miss Syracuse), Meghan Cahill (Miss Salt City) and Jessica Brosofsky (Miss Erie Canal). These women are now eligible to compete for the Miss New York 2017 title.

I would rather that Katz and Greenberg not talk with JB about how coaches deal with injuries. Seems like bad mojo going into a season where we are already paper thin on the front line.

Sometimes you hit a home run, sometimes you swing and miss. :noidea:
Yeah. Kind of like the recruitment of Anthony Harris. As I recall, he was billed as a superstar in the making.
