JB's Presser after Carleton

I really, really, really, really...did i say really(?), HATE this idea.
We will get slaughtered on the boards in ACC play. Period.

Also, we were equally terrible during that long stretch with Dolezaj at center midway through the second half.

On the bright side, this could be the way to get Braswell more time. But it sure creates a huge disadvantage at center.

I have a general rule that if a majority of boomers are against something then it probably is a good idea. The people who are against this are the same type of people who are against an employer building a new factory or warehouse in their neighborhood they cry that their commute is going to be 3 minutes longer. The entire argument of the people against this reeks of NIMBYism.

LOLOL

I think center is the toughest position to learn in the zone and the hardest transition from high school to college. I can't name a center that played well as a freshmen for us, but I can for every other position.

Baye Keita, and he's the only one. Forget about the S&C disadvantage, you're right - it's a very complicated position that I wouldn't expect the young guys to learn.

Brings us to the age-old question - who's better: the tall center who doesn't know what he's doing or the junior forward who might know his responsibilities but might not have the physique to do them?

If Guerrier catches on that he is needed as an inside player, he'll play.

If, as in the first half of this game, he decides he wants to stay 22 feet out and bomb three's, we have guys that can do that better than he can.
Which is why he played only 3 minutes in the first half. Message apparently received, as he did not attempt a 3-pointer in the second half.

I'd say your comparison is "bizarre" at best.

In this case you can go with your "Millennial gut" or listen to the people who know something about how things work.

It hardly matters as things are now going to happen the way they are going to happen.

My non-Millennial instincts tell me a couple of things.

1. The NCAA, which really doesn't believe this is a good idea, is charged with figuring out how to implement this or how to appear to be implementing this while at the same time doing its best to undermine it. That's what bureaucracies do when they are told to do something they don't like.

2. When it does get implemented the abuses, loopholes and unintended consequences will become obvious.

3. The lawyers will show up, much like the turkey vultures that show up at the tops of high trees on our street in the winter to feast on the fallen.

4. You and your ilk will bask in the satisfaction of sticking it to the rich and distributing the money to the not rich. While being oblivious to the consequences, none of which can be ascribed to you (in your minds.)

I still don't why the NCAA can't regulate, (as opposed to banning), endorsement compensation. Just have a set rate for doing commercials so a Kentucky booster doesn't pay $100,000 for it. And they could say that half the money should go back to the school and help pay for the scholarships and stipends other athletes get.

As to quarterbacks getting more and better deals than linemen, doesn't that happen in the pros? Does that tear apart those teams?

That kind of surprises me about JBA. I thought he looked like he might be able to contribute and body people on defense.

I would say it's early to write him off just yet. He didn't make the Italy trip and thus needs more time. One thing that was clear is his positioning for rebounds has drawn fouls in both short stints. He didn't pull a bunch down but was super active attacking the glass. Strength wise I think he can far better hold his own compared to Edwards.

The NCAA doesn’t hold anyone accountable and boomers never like being held accountable!;)

If you think college football and college basketball are amateur athletes you are turning a blind to facts.
TV dollars off the hook, tickets aren't cheap. Texas A&M raised 500 million dollars in donations from the football season Johnny Manziel won the Heisman trophy,

These players AREN'T amateurs. The are cashcows for schools and if they can make money off their likeness they should.
Why should ESPN/ABC/CBS/FOX be able to promo games with players with their likeness and the kids can't get paid for that. The game is about players.

The rowing/swimming/diving/field hockey/golf teams are getting their scholarships paid for by football/basketball money.
Don't make it like P5 schools are only breaking even. Big Ten teams are getting 50 million dollars a YEAR in just TV money.
These ADs are swimming in profits. Bean counters can always cook the books. Schools/NCAA don't want change because the current status quo is good for them. Players being to able to profit on their own likeness takes away power from them. That is all they care about (Quote)

As long as you persist in believing this fight is about short term money, you will never understand it. You can't see beyond your own anger at the perceived unfairness of the current system.

It's really about trying to maintain even a semblance of equality among schools. It's really about control and keeping a lid on things that could easily spiral out of control. It's about not wanting to kill the goose that says the golden egg and ending up with all of it declared as nakedly commercial (non-Education-related) with all of it being taxable revenue to the schools.

There won't be much left for the girl's volley ball program after the Feds and States take a 40% chunk.

Up until now, the Emperor (Big Time College sports) could be said to be clothed even though he has only a pair of drawers and his socks on.

There won't be $$ for Women's Volleyball player because Women's volleyball isn't turning a profit at anywhere except maybe Penn State.

This current system isn't fair. Syracuse and P5 teams have an advantage financially over G6 schools/mid majors.
The current system allows the people at the top pretend everything is okay like it is now.
NCAA/schools were making millions off a video game that was popular because of the players and sport.
EA Sports College Football.
That game can comeback now because every player in D1 can get a royalty and the game can be sold. Players/schools/NCAA will all profit.

The Feds/state aren't taking money from the schools. They are still tax-exempt entities. The players who make money off their likeness will get taxed.

He's been absolutely consistent and clear on this from the get-go.

Of course, no one knows how this is going to play out and what the impacts are going to be. And he says that he doesn't know. So if you are looking for clarity on that, you won't be satisfied.

He's not against players getting more money, although with meal money and "cost of attendance" money they are doing much better.

One of the true things he said in this presser was that there are two types of people. The ones that don't know how things work. They are all for it. And the one's that do and they are the ones with all the questions.

It reminds me of an observation made by Thomas Sowell.

"Recent history in the US shows us consistently choosing what sounds good over what we know works."
personally, I'm just amazed that you quoted Thomas Sowell and some millennial didn't rip you for it and call him a discredited old fool.

I agree with jeff daniels in the newsroom. You millennial's are the worst period generation period ever period. All I see from you guys is I want free stuff. Free health care. Free college education. You know those loans we took out, we don't want to pay them back. I'm still waiting for the millennial's first real accomplishment.

LOL. I paid off my education. Thanks though. And a little harassment never hurt anyone.

As you know, that would require them knowing who Thomas Sowell is. And whether or not he is "discredited" depends very much on who you believe.

Like Sowell or not, you would have to be extremely dense not to appreciate the wisdom in that observation. There is so much evidence of the truth of that.

I think he's brilliant and an American treasure, some others on this board have a more progressive nuanced opinion..

Good for you paying off your college debt.

But I'm guessing your still licking your chops over more free stuff you might be able to get paid for by the undeserving rich.

I just read 70% of Millennials think Socialism for the US is a good idea.

LOL. Nah. I don't need handouts. Thanks for offering though!

Works for whom?

I get his general point, this can’t become about Kentucky and UNC offering the most money to recruits, and that the star player shouldn’t get exponentially more than the 10th best player on the team.

But it was about 6 minutes of talking in circles. And he seemed to dance in and out of whether or not getting a scholarship should be enough for college athletes.
Its not a simple issue. It becomes really simple, however, if Billy Fucillo and others step up and start paying big bucks for our players to be in commercials.

Serious question - can the Jim and Julie Boeheim foundation pay players to appear at fundraising events and in commercials.

Short rotations only work if the team doesn’t have depth.
If the difference between the 8th-10th players is minor it’s stupid to only have an 8 man rotation when in certain games the 7-8th players may be off and the 9-10th could get hot.
Having a preset rotation only makes sense you have good players that don’t need to be subbed.

NBA teams sure have a shorter playoff rotation but during the season they go deeper. It should be same for us but our HC coaches every single game like it’s game 7 of the Finals. I get it when you don’t have depth but geez this team should have 10 players getting some minutes in every game.
From your keyboard, to JB’s ears.
When it comes to using his bench, each year I end up like Michael Corleone: “ Just when i think I’m out, he pulls me back in”!

If I’m Girard I’m worried about playing against Virginia. History shows if a bench players plays too well, they actually see less time. Note Braswell last night. He was all the talk after the first game and barely saw the floor last night. Girard played well last night, so he might get buried next. I’ve seen this movie before. After two games, Guerrier and Carey are not two of our five best players. Granted, I’m not at practice, but they have both shown very little in the first two games, except they both take very bad shots too early in a possession.
This is delusional. And Quincy and Jalen are clearly two of our most athletic and talented players. They both need to play, but so do Braswell and Girard and Goodine.

Works for whom?

Well. it looks like it's working for the great majority of the people. Millions are entertained. Schools are reaping huge amounts of money that they plow back into all sort of programs. Athletes are getting free college educations and now spending money and a chance to audition and train to be multi-millionaires. Chevrolet gets to show potential customers its fleet of SUV's ad nauseum.

No other country has anything like college sports.

The NCAA tries mightily to keep the whole thing honest and to keep things as even as they can through thicket of rules.

Now some politicians want to help. What could possible go wrong?
