Mike Hopkins's move to Washington creates fascinating dilemma for Syracuse

Excerpts from Pete Thamel's latest lambasting of Boeheim and Syracuse...

A move to keep Boeheim longer than expected would be bowing to fan pressure and an acknowledgement that filling the Carrier Dome is more important that academic integrity and following the rules.

Try putting together a list for that job. It’s not easy. There are no names that immediately come to mind.

Following Boeheim and living in central New York aren’t huge draws for hot young coaches. Would an established coach like Dayton’s Archie Miller or Xavier’s Chris Mack leave the comforts of their current jobs for Syracuse? Probably not.

Winning has helped Boeheim outlast two one-year NCAA postseason bans, his insensitive public comments in the wake of the Bernie Fine case and countless petulant public outbursts. The university has shown over the years a distinct comfort in accepting Boeheim’s flaws in order to get 30,000 in the stands on a February night and show up in the tourney bracket nearly every March.

Bowing to fan pressure?

Have you ever spoke to a Syracuse fan sir?

Thamel is a sniveling Newhouse twat. Does he think that people will stop going when boeheim retirees if they're still good?

This is the most highly negative article that could be written. Thamel throws everything at Boeheim and SU but the kitchen sink.

It's so far over the top, it's ridiculous.

We play in the ACC we draw the highest or second highest crowds in the country, we are one of the most successful programs in the country, certainly a top 10-12 job. Thamel talks about us like we are Oregon State. Guy is a jackass
But according to Thamel, SU is only those things because they have decided to break rules and sacrifice academic ethics by keeping Boeheim. Otherwise SU would be Colgate. Apparently.

Is Thamel suggesting that Boeheim is some magical attendance draw and that thousands will stay away if he isn't sitting there with his fingers in his nose?

What strange day. Townie72, I agree with you.

he was very good when he first came out of su. now he's just a clown show trying to make headlines. someone at su obviously pissed in his cheerios.

Well, let's look at facts. Thamel wrote the article that said that Boeheim wanted to coach longer than just next year. Boeheim denies it (was he forced to deny it?). Then Hopkins leaves and Boeheim gets an extension. Many here have said that Boeheim would never want a farewell tour, but Boeheim has also been somewhat vocal that he "didn't do anything wrong" regarding the punishment from the NCAA. It was other people's fault. And there you go, he's not giving up his seat after all, despite what Syverud and Wildhack said just a couple months ago.

So, if I'm Thamel and I'm pissed, maybe it's because he was used as Boeheim's mouthpiece that he wanted to stay, Boeheim denied it making Thamel look bad, and then Boeheim gets just what he allegedly wanted in the first place - not to be forced out by the NCAA. Did I miss anything there?

Now who is this serving? Is it in SU's interest that he doesn't want to go? Is it in SU's interest that Hopkins, after all this public acknowledgement of him as coach-in-waiting for literally years now, is gone? We just extended the contract of a coach who is going to be 73 at the start of the season?

I agree. Now compare it to the article he wrote about Boeheim a week or two ago. Why such a different tone?

Thamel obviously has very good SU sources and will share useful information on occasion. Unfortunately, he also appears to have an unhealthy disdain for Boeheim and can't write an article about JB without throwing in shots. And now he's disrespecting SU and central New York state. What a peach!
