Are you trying to deceive players into staying or other schools from knowing whom to target? Players will know where they stand without a depth chart. As far as other schools, pretty sure ND knew Pickett was atop the Pitt depth chart when they targeted him. Of course that could have just been "The Kelly Effect" but he is not the only coach like that.

It's not about the Pickett scenario. I assume this stuff is all so shady that of course larger schools will try to poach when they can.

But if there's possibly some kind of mass exodus that comes with kids not getting the starting job, what is accomplished by publishing a post spring depth chart? Is there a law that you have to create one?

Spring practice is more about development than anything else. If a kid already feels like he's lost the job and doesn't want to stick around until preseason (when it's more serious), then who wants him anyway?

Agreed. They probably thought schools would come clamoring for them similar to how they were recruited out of HS. Now that most have college film, schools can make a better decision on their viability.
