Jim Boeheim’s radio show is on Thursdays from 7-9PM on ESPN Radio in Syracuse, which is AM1200 or FM 97.7 on the dial. The show originates from Delmonico’s Italian Steakhouse on Erie Boulevard in Syracuse. The first hour, hosted by Matt Park, the Voice of the Orange, is on their general network. The second hour, which begins with the conference season, is hosted by Gomez, a local radio personality.

You can call into the show locally at 315-424-8599 or nationally at 1-888-746-2873. For Gomez’s portion, use 315-424-8599. Or you can submit questions from this page:
http://cuse.com/sb_output.aspx?form=4
Or on Twitter at mattpark1 or “askBoeheim”.

The show can be heard in Syracuse on FM 99.5. It’s sometime simulcast on AM 1200 or FM 97.7. You can also get it on: http://tunein.com/radio/WGVA-1240-s29191/

I will be posting my rough transcript the night of the broadcast focusing on my questions, the team and their last and next games and then a second post the next day on other things that were discussed.

MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS

First hour:

“Coach, what is your preference on the various suggests about what is to be done about the Carrier Dome and its roof?”

Second hour:

“Coach, you’ve said that you are afraid that if Bernie Sanders won the election, you’d wind up losing 80-90% of your income to the Federal Government and, if that happened, you’d rather quit and coach a high school team. If Bernie Sanders does get elected President, will you be retiring early?”

COACH BOEHEIM
(I have, in some instances, put together statements from different parts of the broadcast on the same subject. They are now doing two hour shows. I will do two posts: one on the night of the broadcast on the issues directly relating to the team on the other the next days on other things that were talked about.)

Coach summarized the season: “I begin thinking about the season in September so it’s been a long year. The defense has been pretty good. The offense has flipped a couple of times. It’s hard to win with a bad offense. In the tough games we made those shots. We made our first two (threes) against Pitt and then went 4 for 24….We lead the conference in three point shooting and are 3rd or 4th in steals. We’ve held most teams below what they usually score….We’ve been pretty consistent. We’ve won the games we should have won. There were good reasons when we lost. We’ve had some dead spots but so have the other teams. You hope their dead spots come when ours do. ”

Liam in Pompey again had a call to complain about- the one where Tyler Lydon was under the basket vs. Pitt and got stripped. JB: “It looked like he was fouled. There are always some bad calls. The refs didn’t decide that game and wins and losses are what we want.”

I called in my question about the Dome. “It’s a unique building, the biggest on campus facility in the country. I had to laugh. Someone said we were only averaging 21,000 per game. That’s better than 349 other schools. It’s second best but most people would be happy with second best. You could build a nice 16,000 seat arena and it would be what everybody else has. Pete Sala has kept the roof up there for many years.” (Thanks, Pete!) “A permanent roof costs so much. I’ve bene told they could put the roof up during the season, then deflate the other roof.” (???) “They could improve the locker rooms and the court area. There isn’t a bad seat for football.” What about a new facility off campus? “You can’t have it off campus. You wouldn’t capture the students. It would be too hard for them to get there….You can’t underestimate how valuable the Dome has been to the program.” (I think he meant “overestimate”.) “We’re very lucky to have it. We need to retain its uniqueness. Clifford Winters got it built and he said “You’re going to play there.” Every team had to play there to make it financially worthwhile. It would be very different to go with two buildings now. Building a new place from scratch will cost $300 million.”

Jim didn’t know why anyone would even asked DaJuan Coleman if he was coming back. “We knew this would be a difficult year. He’s shown signs of what he can do. His knees are holding up. He should be better next year….We’ll have Pascal and DaJuan, two big, physical guys. Tyler Lydon will go back to playing forward and Malachi will be playing guard. We’ll have more depth and people in their right positons.”

I thought one caller was praising DaJuan for his enthusiasm on the bench. JB: He’s been great. He’s done a great job. He’s a great teammate.” The caller said he is fast has great hands and could make a great tight end for the football team.” It was at that point that I thought they might not be talking about DaJuan. Coach said “I’m not sure he likes contact. He’s 6-7. He’s not a great player coming in but he’s helped us in practice.” I looked at the roster and they had to be talking about 6-6 235 sophomore Doyin Akintobi-Adeyeye.

Michael Gbinije is on the verge of being our “third 1,000 point transfer”, (the others are Leo Rautins and Ryan Blackwell).”You can’t ask Mike to do more than he’s done. He was not a good shooter or ball-handler when he came here. He’s is very good now. His defense has gotten better. He worked hard in the weight room. His stamina is great. The players doing the most for their teams in this league are Michael, Malcolm Brogden of Virginia, Anthony Barber of North Carolina State and (I didn’t get the name- I assume Zach Auguste or Demetrius Jackson) of Notre Dame.”

Trevor Cooney has “played tremendously. I don’t know what people expect. He’s a good player. He was not good on defense but has gotten a lot better. He’s had a lot of big games here. This year we got him more help but the defense still keys on him. It keeps the passing and driving games open. He’s not a great player. He’s a very good player. “ Matt said that he’s “on the cusp” of joining a club of players with 1,300 points, 200 assists and 200 steals that includes only Dale Shackelford, Sherman Douglas, Billy Owens, Lawrence Moten, and Jason Hart. JB: “That’s a pretty good list. All those players played in the NBA.” (Shackleford was not.)

Later a caller asked about our the “intangible benefits” of having two 5th year seniors in the backcourt. JB: “The leadership you don’t see is huge. In the Bahamas we were facing two ranked teams and were down late. Both Michael and Trevor were saying not to worry- we got it. We play 7 guys and three of them are freshmen. Another, DaJuan Coleman is in his first year back after two years off. He’s like a first year player. These two guys have really made plays. You have to look at the key plays in the game. They’ve stuck 2-3 big threes and provided steady leadership. We were 0-4 in the conference and then got a win but had to play Wake Forest, Duke and Virginia on the road. We won 2 of three and then beat four pretty good teams at home. We’re spoiled here. I’m spoiled. I want more. It’s been a very traumatic year, full of issues. We lost a guy who could have helped us inside just as the season was about to begin. We’ve won more close ones than we’ve lost. Mike and Trevor are averaging 30 points per game and are leading the league in steals.”

“Mike and Trevor have won a lot of games in their career giving maximum effort. I don’t get upset over a missed shot. I can’t get upset with players who are giving their all… Trevor’s Mom and Dad have come to every game their son has played. They are tremendous parents…Trevor is not Gerry McNamara, although he’s better on defense than Gerry was. He’s done some great things and won a lot of games. “

On the two teams we will play before the next show, North Carolina State and North Carolina, who just played each other: “Two really good teams. North Carolina still has a chance to be one of the best teams in the country. They have a tremendous front line, great depth, great talent. Bryce Johnson leads the league in double-doubles. He’s the best big guy in the country. They didn’t shoot well and still won by 12 on the road. That’s when you are really good….Anthony Barber can drive on 2-3 guys, can make pull-ups and is getting better at long range shots. He’s the best point guard in the league. State beat Pitt by 16 at Pitt- nobody does that. They’ve lost a lot of close games.” Duke, Virginia and UNC beat them by double figures- their other 8 league losses have been by single digits.

Both Pat and Drew from Clay suggested that the team might have some extra motivation from the way the fans treated them in Raleigh last year. JB: “Fans are going to be fans. I just ignore it. Duke fans can be hard on you but they applauded when I faked taking off my jacket.” He talked about one game from a couple of years ago where one lady seated behind the SU bench “would stand and scream two feet from me during the time outs. It was the loudest high-pitched scream I’ve ever heard in my life. Fortunately we were way ahead so I didn’t have to talk much. Once, when we played at St. Bonaventure, four students sat with their knees in my back and were screaming until I turned around and talked to them. It was absolutely not funny.” Now we know why JB won’t play the Bonnies in their place.

Pat also wanted to know if NC State defends the pick and roll the way Pitt did. JB: “They’ll change it up but they’ll play it tough. They rely on offense. They are a very good offensive team.“ Then Pat asked asked about recruiting. JB: “We used to recruit nationally but it’s more productive to recruit the northeast. There are 40 Division 1 players in New England. We recruit DC, Philly and New York. There’s enough players there to support the program. “

Dave wanted to know about “one of your player you haven’t talked about lately- Tyler Roberson”. That got a laugh. Dave wanted to know if he makes that 12 footer in practice. JB: “He can’t make that shot yet. He can drive. The big problem is that he’s got to go to the offensive boards. When we screen his defender is helping. He’s got to play harder. I wish he could make that shot. It would make us a way better team. He was working with Coach Hopkins for about a half hour today. You can’t score a lot if you can’t make a 15 foot shot. He hits about 20% of them. …I should have said that we can’t win with one player getting 1 point and 4 rebounds. He knew what I was trying to do. He’s a 21 year old man, not an 18 year old child. His AAU coach knew what I was trying to do. Some people are…sensitive. It’s never personal. I’m trying to get players to play as well as they can for the team and for them- they want careers in basketball.”

“I do yell at Trevor Cooney for taking a bad shot…but never for missing. There’s never a problem with effort from him. He’s made threes when we’ve won. We really struggle to score inside. The value of Trevor is that he allows Mike and Mal to drive to the basket. Trevor is second in the league in three point shots.”

“Tyler absolutely thinks he’s playing hard. When he isn’t we have to show him the proof on film. If he doesn’t run down the court or doesn’t go after loose balls, it’s on the film. I used to battle with Rony Seikaly all the time about giving maximum effort. The player gets mad at the coach because he thinks he is giving maximum effort. Some players you have to push hard, some you don’t. Some can take it, some can’t. The 1975 and 1996 teams came back and told me asked me why I want’ being as tough on the current team as I was on them. it is true that you’re not as tough anymore. But you can’t say “Please”. A teacher can say please to a student and ask them to do things. The teacher isn’t going to be fired if the student flunks. But I won’t be’ teaching’ any more if we don’t win. You aren’t allowed to fail.”

Darryl in Clay expressed admiration for GMAC and Trevor and asked if JB has “another sniper after Trevor?” JB: Not another Irish guy. Those were the only two who could shoot in the last 20 years. “

I called in my second question. “If Bernie does get in, it will take a couple of years to get his legislation through and the Republicans would stop him. Socialism is not a good option. Bernie’s a nice guy with a nice message. Who wouldn’t support a guy who wants to take money from the rich and give it to them?” As long as we don’t lose you, coach. “I’ll still be here.”

Next week will be their last show of the season.

"We lost a guy who could have helped us inside just as the season was about to begin."
Interesting comment from Boeheim. There are posters here who say Diagne was never going to qualify.

.You can’t underestimate how valuable the Dome has been to the program.” (I think he meant “overestimate”.)

Actually, I think Coach meant to say "mis-underestimate."

He was really high on the Dome. Interesting to read his comments on that. He also clarified again how much he tries to help Roberson by showing him film and how he had the same problem motivating Seikaly. Both Roberson and Seikaly were convinced they were giving it 100% and the film could prove that they weren't. D'oh!

Great write up as usual, SWC! Thank you.

“A permanent roof costs so much. I’ve bene told they could put the roof up during the season, then deflate the other roof.” (???)

Thanks for the write-up SWC. I think what he meant by the above quote is that they could construct a new roof over top of the existing roof without impacting building operations, then when the new roof is complete, deflate the old (now inner) roof and remove it. Whether this is truly feasible, I do not know, but I think that is what he is saying here.

I wonder if the Arthur Ashe Stadium roof project might be a model for our dome construction.

Great post as always. Definitely looking forward to expanding the recruiting geography whenever that may be.

I got the impression that that's not what he will be doing.

Coaches don't normally get on players they know are giving it all in practice and games. A coach's biggest frustration has to be trying to find the correct buttons to motivate those talented players who are willing to settle while they resent you for actually having higher expectations than they do. A great coach once told me that the time to worry is when a coach stops yelling at you because he's either given totally up on you or he believes you are doing all that your possibly capable of.

A possible disclaimer: I did know a coach who would get so amped up, he'd yell at anything in sight including a player who had a dumb turnover before he realized it was an opponent and his own player had converted it for a fast break. He was standing of course, twirled around in disgust screaming " why, why" , while an assistant tried to get get his attention to show him that it was an opponent - of course the coach wasn't happy having his pointless tirade pointed out either. :rolling:

Pat also wanted to know if NC State defends the pick and roll the way Pitt did. JB: “They’ll change it up but they’ll play it tough. They rely on offense. They are a very good offensive team.“ ...

Coach-speak translation: North Carolina State doesn't play defense.

i caught a little bit of the show and was also a little puzzled by coaches remarks about how we only recruit northeast.
SYRACUSE is a national brand and we should absolutely slam canada and perhaps cast a net wider than jersey and baltimore.

Cherie, what a great summary in one simple statement:

A coach's biggest frustration has to be trying to find the correct buttons to motivate those talented players who are willing to settle while they resent you for actually having higher expectations than they do.

I loved your anecdote about the coach screaming at his player for the opponent's turnover. That truly was hilarious!

Boeheim says the damnest things.

PART 2

Matt said “There is no news on Carmelo Anthony. Kristaps Porzingis said he would hate to see him go.” JB: “They are a player or two away. They need a really good guard. They are getting a little better but aren’t there yet.”

Anthony Davis had a 59 point, 20 rebound game against Detroit. “He’s the best big man in the NBA”.

They marveled at the Warriors, who had just gotten 75 points from their starting backcourt in a game against the heat. The night of the show they got 60 more: 51 by Steph Curry who became the first player ever to get 10 three pointers and 10 two pointers in the same game. I have a pal who lives in Oakland and is a huge Warriors fan. He’s having a lot of fun these days after many years of being an also-ran.

There’s a rumor the Warriors will trade Harrison Barnes for Kevin Durrant, (both are free agents after this year). JB: they play the same positon.” I think the Warriors could use some more firepower. Don’t you?

#1 went down again as Xavier beat Villanova. “Xavier is very good and can beat anybody. Villanova is very good but they’ve lost in the first or second round 5-6 years in a row so there’s a lot of pressure on them. It’s unfortunate because it throws out what you do in the regular season”

Coach K said his team needs “more personality”. Duke “doesn’t have a lot of players but the ones they have are really good. Allen and Ingram are two of the best freshmen in the country.“ If Allen is a freshman, that’s news to Wisconsin. What was he last year?

It looks like Kansas will win its 12th straight Big 12 title. Bill self was asked if it’s better to have 1-2 dominant teams or a well-balanced league. Self said he didn’t mind having 1-2 dominant teams as long as Kansas was one of them.

Leonard Hamilton got a contract extension, despite Florida State’s slump. “He’s done a great job. It’s not that easy a place to get players….Miami will lose a lot of guys- they have four seniors. But they’ve got some good players coming in.”

Does Coach have any comment about the “mess at Tennessee?” “It’s along running period. You just don’t know what it’s about until it all comes out.” Been there…done that.

Arizona coach Sean Miller is concerned about court-storming:
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bas...arizona-wildcats-blasts-pac-12-court-storming
Jim thinks that if you try to prevent it, it might cause more injuries. “if somebody pushes somebody and they hit back, then you’ve got a real problem.”

What does the coach think about the new Major League Baseball rules? There’s going to be a 30 second limit on visits to the mound by pitching coaches. “That’s what they take now.” They are eliminating the “neighborhood play” at second base by making calls there reviewable. “It used to be a safety measure.” Gomez said that “the slider must now touch the ground before reaching the base. He must touch the base. They’ve eliminated the cut block.” JB: “It’s a good rule.. They should take a normal slide and not roll into a guy.”

The SU women were winning again. “I can’t say enough about the women’s team this year…They shoot threes and can get hot and beat anybody. Or they can go cold and have trouble with anybody.” Sounds like the men’s team. They pointed out that, unlike the men, women’s teams can get home games in the NCAA tournament. The women are playing games in quarters. “I haven’t heard too much about doing it in the men’s game. I’m sure there’s a rationale for it but I don’t know what it is.”

They lauded the seniors. Jim said “It’s so hard to get a degree in four years and play basketball”.

Pat asked if Jim was going to be at the sectional championship game between Bishop Ludden and Liverpool, (which is coached by former SU player Ryan Blackwell). “I’m not recruiting anybody there. But it will be a good game.” When he goes to see his kids play, does he discuss the game with them or the coaches? “Coaches rarely talk to parents. I just watch and go home. There’s so much parental involvement in high school. They try to pressure the coaches because they want their kids to get scholarships. I talk to the kids about the game: what I see and they think. Both are hard workers. It’s fun watching your kids try to get better and play hard. Jimmy is 17 and probably needs a year in prep school. He could play for a lower Division 1 program.” I guess JB II won’t be in orange.

Jim knows lots of cool people. He is acquainted with the actor Bill Murray. Once at a final four,. Bill was sitting with a bunch of Illinois fans, (I’m guessing this is 2005), and spotted Jim and called him over to sit with them and he’s had dinner with Bill a couple of times at charity golf events. “He’s a funny guy. You can’t even eat your food. You can’t get a better show than Bill Murray going on.” Bills son is an assist coach at Providence. Bill once invited the coach to join him in Ithaca for a Cornell football game. But Jim was recruiting in Texas. Bill still wanted him to fly up. “It’s only one day.”

One caller announced “There’s no rest for the wicked” and asked what JB does to go on vacation. Jim took joking exception to the use of the term “wicked”. He said he takes his kids to play AAU ball in places like Scranton Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Sounds like fun. “We’ve been to Disney World a couple of times.”

Well, our road presence is lessened for a while.

Don't agree with the statement about failing and getting fired. There is no excuse for berating a player in public. Society has no tolerance for this type of behavior by anyone. He knows better and shouldn't be making lame excuses.
