Tony White to Nebraska

Nebraska is 9th all time in wins, we are 30th. 5 national titles to our 1. Their football budget in the B10 is perhaps double ours. Yes they have been a train wreck lately but our train wreck days aren’t far in the rear view. I would hardly call it a lateral move.
It’s a lateral move to fans like us. Behind the scenes in the coaching world there are so many connections and reasons why you want to be on particular staffs. A lot of different exits off the freeway that lead to certain places they want to end up. It’s not going to make sense to us.

And even when they've been bad, they continue to sell out a 90K seat stadium. There are pros and cons to it, but I can understand the attraction of wanting to coach in a football mad environment like that.

Yeah let’s be real here, they are a bigger program with much bigger resources and much bigger fan support than we have. Right now we are better but their ceiling, although not what is was in the Osborne days, is still higher than ours

Yeah agree. Nebraska is not a lateral move. Also it's rare for any football coach to stay at a school longterm. If TW was a winner and TW led us to 3 or 4 bowls and rankings in as many years and decided to leave that's better than not having had those good seasons.

Dino and many others made move after move to get to their current jobs including guys like Saban. Based on the article White had multiple opportunities. If he can do as well in Nebraska as he did here, he will be in line for a great head coaching job.

I guess Tony, besides the assumed big raise in pay, must thrive on challenges.

Nebraska needs help - their best record in the past eight years has been 9-4. This year as you can see 4-8, the year previous 3-9, 3-5, 5-7, 4-8, 4-8.

He has his work cut out for him. Matt Rhule brought him into a mess. (edit)

As long as rhule isn't enjoying the night life and showing up to recruiting visits while drunk.

6 straight losing seasons? Yikes. Even in our bad last 2 decades, we’ve never had that many consecutive losing seasons.

There was supposedly an off field issue that wasn't documented. He wasn't fired because of his record.

It reminds me of Buddy Ryan when he said after they cut Carter from Philly..."All he does is catch TD's.". He took the bullet on that one for him.

Per Footballscoop

Matt Rhule has hired Kevin McGarry away from us as his new Senior Defensive Analyst. He joins Tony White.
He was an Analyst(Defense) for us. He was with Rocky Long at San Diego St for 11 years.

I have to believe some part of White's thinking is that Rhule was an NFL coach and will run an NFL system and he wants to coach in that system which could get him an NFL job, along with Rhules contacts.
White accomplished all that he could at SU. Other than getting a head coaching job down a division his best move was to the NFL or run D for another D1 school. Nebraska checks all the boxes for him. My sense is he will be making another move within 3 years max

How did we allow this ? Is DC Long bringing in his own guy ?

Re titles mattering... I will say, I'm on month three at a new company as a VP. The function I'm in hasn't had a VP level person since summer when their CMO retired. Highest level on the team was a senior director.

Hierarchy matters. It's frustrating. There are good things they advocated for that they couldn't get off the ground. Then I showed up with the fancy title, and stuff started getting done.

Whenever they backfill the CMO it'll be an even bigger impact.

People are weird. We're all just wolves some time.

Yep its a weird illogical society we live in these days.
