turmoil at Duke

Oh absolutely. I'm not talking about faculty that doesn't teach and just does research. They have to bring in grant money. I'm talking about faculty that teaches but maybe has less grant money (or an equivalent type of contribution). In my experience these folks tend to be pushed out. Actual teaching of students in undergraduate and graduate education tends to receive less importance. Just look at the number of TAs and not professors running many classes in the university setting.

That's why my wife decided to teach at a smaller liberal arts college where the focus is much more on students than what it is at a major research university. She doesn't make nearly as much money as faculty who I work with at the University of South Carolina, but she is very happy because she enjoys teaching more than doing research. She does both, but the student is priority one which I believe is very nice to see.
