TR

You don't think JB understands that?
He talked about this exact thing in his book.
You don't think there can be a difference between what a person 'knows' intellectually, and what they actually do? Personally, i can give phenomenal advice, but my own life is a disaster.

I don't read books 'by' coaches... Do they usually tell us that they're weak in certain areas?

It's not a matter of being 'thin-skinned.' If you're a coach, and don't recognize that you have different personalities on your team, and that the same approach isn't going to work on every kid, there's something wrong. It's not the Army.

A coach's job is to get the maximum out of every player, not to push a square peg through a round hole. He didn't get the max out of TR.

I'm sure JB tried everything in his power to get TR to perform on a consistent bases over the last four years and never figured him out. This must have been very frustrating for both of them. The fact is at 135 years old JB isn't going to change his approach. JB and TR should have never been on the same team.

i agree JB decided what his role would be, and judging from his 4 years here i dont see why we would encourage roberson to shoot jumpers when we know its unlikely he makes them. How many times in practice did TR make jump shots?? the answer is not often, Jb came out and said he shoots a very low % in practice so hwy would he want him shooting them in a game??

i agree with this 100%. I used to have a coach who would always tell me to know my role and not be something im not. Tr couldnt shoot jumpers so why would he.

Coleman couldn't make a layup for years. Mike Gbinije allegedly couldn't dribble as a sophomore. The coaching staff worked with them to improve on those things; that's what they're there for: player development. Roberson was let down by the staff.

This one hits close to home. All my friends come to me for advice, or an ear that will listen. Yet, my life is...I don't even know the word. I do have good advice, and give support though, it seems.

Yup. I'm one of those guys who likes our players. Maybe more than I like JB.

Had to edit that. Sounded different than I meant it when I read it again.

That's fine. I like JB, and all of our players. Some more than others, but I understand the sentiment. JB is JB. I personally love the guy. The one press conference did go over the top, though.

Still, I think he was so frustrated because he knew how good Robey could be. Just a kid who probably wasn't built for the pressure. I really hope he learns how good he is, and finds a spot somewhere.

May be overseas, but he will be making good money. It probably will also take pressure off of him. He has a similar personality to me. I had talent, but got out there, and just thought about everything. Especially when shooting. Imagine being in front of a giant crowd playing for a top program. It's why I stink at golf, and there's only a few people watching.

Some thrive off of it, some don't, and some do alright. You know what they say about the mental part. I forget the quote. I'm not mentally well.

Similar to Paul Harris, we probably weren't the best place for him.

Lets face it JB was a complete tool the way he publicly treated this kid. There is zero reason for him to do that and there is nothing good that will ever come from that approach.
You basically sound like JB when trashing JB about how he trashes his players... it makes for an interesting conundrum. I'm sure you'll find a way to let yourself off the hook and not hold yourself to the same standard though with some "public forum for fans to debate" schpiel, right?

Silent Gs handle, driving ability, and 3 pt shot are literally what saved us his Sr year.

Whatever the record for restating the same opinion on the same message board is you have shattered it. How many times do we have to discuss this? The kid is gone. Your opinion on the matter is known.

I guess im a little like JB as he publicly stated his opinion on TR numerous times.

TR could (long shot but possible) find his way onto an NBA roster if he focuses on rebounding and defense. Basically model his game after Rodman. He needs to be a beast on the boards.

Post of the thread. I may be the only person on here to have worn a JB t-shirt, but even in that workout video I can still spot some hesitation. It can take a lot of conditioning to get rid of it, like it may have to develop it. No idea how folks will defend things like JB saying he knew Tyler would miss that free throw after his epic offensive rebound at the end of the game. What does JB hope to accomplish there? Tyler may be the only player I actually care to root harder for after his SU career than while he was here. Too much wasted potential during his SU years. Here's to hoping he's around people who can bring out the best in him.

Surprised that nobody mentioned this, but he actually found kind things to say about Boeheim in that video. At the very least, the kid etched himself in the record books against the perennial best team in the conference, regardless of how many times he was Boeheimed in his career. That's what I choose to remember him by. LGT!

I stongly support Roberson. I always loved the guy. And I think JB was absolutely wrong the way he called him out in a press conference. It was flat out wrong in my opinion. All that said, I honestly see nothing in this video that makes me think Roberson has dramatically improved or broken out of a shell or anything like that. Any competent player can make a video like this in a workout gym. What I am saying is this video shows the same Robey we had for 4 years. He is an elite level rebounder and energy guy. That is basically it.

I agree with this basic premise but Tyler was too inconsistent in even those two categories (rebounding/energy) to be called elite, IMO. At times he was very good. Other times invisible. He had a couple of really terrific games...both against Duke (wimpy or injured front lines) but often was pushed out of position. I like the kid and hope it works out for him. I also was disappointed with the way JB handled him but Robey probably was a tough kid to coach. Oh well. Next man up.

Not sure if mentioned, but Roberson will play for the Bucks in Summer League
What's the fit in the NBA for a player like Robie (athletic, good college rebounder and energy guy, but isn't productive offensively)? Is he a lock-down M2M defender and I just missed it?

Also generally agree but you are selling him short on only a couple games. He was really good during the 2016 NCAA tournament and we don't hang a banner without his board work there. He was definitely inconsistent though, no argument there.

Guy improved a ton, big credit to him and the coaches. Nobody would ever mistake him for a good point guard, but he tried a dramatic position change and at the same time became one of the best shooters in school history (underrated, in my opinion). I hope Gbinije's story doesn't get lost in the shuffle as years go by, because he did some great stuff.

Ultimately, I don't think he has an NBA role unless he has more skill than he showed at Syracuse.

I think you have to hope he can be a small ball 4 in the NBA, kinda guy that can switch everything and just play hard on the glass and in transition.

JB brought us to where we are today and he, along ith Juli, have done wonderful things for Syracuse and this community.
Having said that, his development of certain players has left much to be desired. Once a player is in his dog house he seems to remain there. When he constantly inserts a player into the game and they make one mistake, the player is immediately pulled; that kills the player's growth.

Sports have a strong mental component and one-size fits all approach is utilized then some respond in the negative and it kills their growth, as players.

All humans are blind to some of the things they do and how it affects others, JB is no different.
In the case of developing players; his rigid approach to the limited number of players who have meaningful times, in games, to develop severely limits the growth of some.

Tyler is not the only one who has been treated, in this manner, and whose development was placed on hold or even diminished, over time, by this type of old-school coaching.

JB deserves all the accolades he gets for building us into the perennial power we are, in hoops. That doe not mean he is without flaws; nor are any of us.

Go Orange!

Kid just did not fit with our current offense and defense. Robes would've excelled on a run and gun transition team...
